my sources at O2 tell me this from what hey have heard throughout the company so far:

1) You do have to be over 16 to buy instore no execeptions and 18 to buy online (this is due to the high price of the handset)

2) You will need an iPhone SIM reagrdless of whether you are on PAYG or contract

3) yes you can get the 7.50 data bolt on but you are limited to 280MB FUP unlike 3GB on contract

4) YOU DONT get the WiFI access on PAYG

5) Staff rumours at o2 are that the PAYG 8gb will be around the 300 quid mark

Do yourself a fasvour and get a contract on o2 stop thinking about unlockign it apple will brick it, they have been fair in reducing the price of the handset so why take the pee back? You get a very attractive deal on the 35 quid a month contract (especially once i factor in my half price line rental ;) )

I'll still be unlocking if I get one...

will it be simlocked?

I apologize in advance if this has already been answered, but will the PAYG 3G iphone be simlocked to O2? I would like to use the phone back in my home country (Italy) with my local sim card to avoid roaming charges and wonder if this is going to be possible without jailbreaking/hacking the device.

The O2 PAYG iPhone will not be usable on any network other than O2 unless it is unlocked by the user.

O2 have already made it clear that it will be locked to their network.

i dont get why people have to have an iPhone but won't do the proper service contract you will be missing out on so many features of the device and risk having a nice apple paper weight....

i think apple will be a little more strict on jailnreaking and unlocking this time round..

they have made it cheaper....

they have made it more available so why rip them off??

I personally hope that everyone who tries to unlock or jailbreak an iPhone 3G gets bricked!!!!!!!!

£35pm (forget the £30pm deal - that sounds even worse) is probably the equivalent of at least two months land line or one (who knows? even two possibly) budget airline return flight(s) or two months net connection - with change.

I'm on PAYG with another network and barely get through £5 a month.
I'm just nowhere near needing to pay £35 per month for a mobile.

im not being funny but dont u think that the iphone will be over 200 pounds because the ipod touch is 200 pounds hope the iphone is about 250:)

The iPhone 3G will be officially available in many more countries than was previously the case, so there may be another country offering a lower price for an officially unlocked iPhone compared with what Vodafone Italy are going to charge.

Believe me, that isn't going to happen. :D

Anyway why does it bother you so much if someone buys an iPhone at full price (eg version 1 or PAYG iPhone 3G) and then hacks their own equipment? They are not ripping anyone off, nor are they doing anything illegal. :)

I agree, but i wouldn't get my hopes up for prices around £250 either... sorry :(

Actually it does affect how the iPhone 3G is going to be sold as a result of all the unlocking that occurred with the first iPhone. O2 aren't going to risk losing lots of revenue this time round so they are contemplating a higher cost for the PAYG iPhone 3G than they would have done otherwise, and this time round customers wanting a contract deal cannot obtain a phone without giving their personal details in order to secure the contract. (More hassle and potential embarrassment for those who fail the credit check.)

If there had been less unlocking activity first time round, the demand for the phone would have been lower but the result could have been lower contract prices plus an even better PAYG deal for the iPhone 3G. Theoretically. So all that unlocking may just conspire to (rightly or wrongly) make the price of the iPhone 3G Pay & Go deal too much for me.

Having said that, the revenue loss risk for the iPhone 3G is theoretically lower because of more countries selling the phone (hence less export demand for unlocked phones), and there's always the chance of the iPhone 3G remaining 'secure' for longer than the first iPhone. But O2 just cannot afford to take the risk of that being the case.

I'll be missing out on so many features? Like what? Visual voicemail. That was the only thing I didn't get with my previous iPhone. Granted, we don't know if the new iPhone can be unlocked yet, but as soon as it is, it will be mine.

With regards to me ripping "them" off. I don't think it's the case really. As CD3660 already stated, unlocking is not illegal. If anything, I'd be the one getting ripped off by O2's lengthy and expensive contract.

Anyway, thanks for your well wishes for my new iPhone when I get it. LOI
;)

Sorry dude, but I think you're talking a load of bull. When O2 first introduced it's contracts and tariffs for the iPhone last year, they were overpriced and under-used. Since no one was buying, they sweetened the tariffs up but it appeared it still wasn't enough. Hence, the reason they reduced the price to £169 towards the end. It was because they had FAILED to shift the iPhones...

Well said. If it wasn't for the original greed of the likes of O2 and AT&T and the stubborn attitude of Apple in insisting upon exclusive carriers, unlocking may never have become a problem for them in the first place.

They made a rod for their own back by seeking to stifle competition and thereby maintain artificially high prices.

Now they have had to have a major re-think and move in the direction of giving better value for money.

You can thank the hackers and those who stubbornly refused to accept their original 'deals' for that!

Spot on! O2 had some pretty crap plans when they first started selling the iPhone.

I don't mean to disparage your "source" but that is a ludicrous idea.

I think he might mean you don't get The Cloud & BT Openzone with PAYG.

I dont think your sources are all that accurate, the data bolt on wont be £7.50, its gonna be slightly more than that but it will give PAYG users access to the WIFI (The Cloud and BT) as per contract customers. And "staff rumors" of the PAYG iPhone price are just that, rumors.

That makes sense, and after rereading the original post I think that that is what was meant.

I believe I was having "a (brain-dead) moment"! :D ;)

Hey guys

Hey guys im just new to the forum altho iv read all the replies uv posted in here! my friend has the original first version of the iphone and is getting his free upgrade to the 3G iphone, so is giving me his first phone! went into the 02 shop today and the lady there told me she thinks the iphone pay and go sim will offer free internet for the first 6 months, then you will be asked to pay for the internet after wards! i don't know if that could be true but hopefully they will give us a good value for money sim so we don;t have to go unlocking the phones!!!

:D xxxx:apple:

I'll still be unlocking if I get one...

And so will I. long live hacking and unlocking. It's your right to do what you want with your Iphone. If Apple did not want people unlocking their phones then they shouldn't have gotten greedy and tied the phone down to one network in every country. When was the last time you heard someone say I want my N95 unlocked?

Operator changes system of buying device to stop box breakers...

O2 is taking precautions against box breaking on the 3G iPhone after the original version was exploited by box breakers.

The operator has changed the system of buying the device; customers now leave stores connected to O2, whereas before they could connect at home.

It is also understood that O2 will set a high prepay price of around £350 to help guard against the problem.

Jonathan Earle, head of acquisitions for consumer postpay at O2, said: ‘We will price it as competitively as we can without it becoming an opportunity for box breakers.’

I'm still hoping for a price less than £300 otherwise it starts to become uneconomic; you can buy a PAYG LG Viewty (ironically on the O2 network but not from O2 themselves) for £200. Two days ago I asked a salesman in an O2 shop how much the Pay & Go iPhone 3G was going to be, and he said "between £300 and £400", which I suspect means that he knows just as much as we do as to how much it's going to be.

The first iPhone available in the UK was supposed to have been contract only, priced at £269 for the 8GB model; the issue of the high contract price has now been resolved (phone price up to £99, in-store activation) so it's now the unlockers that O2 are concerned about if they want/have to offer a PAYG iPhone.

I suppose that Apple/O2 were originally banking on a loss of warranty to deter jailbreakers/unlockers, but in the end that may just not have been enough.

is this an opinion or do you have some inside information?

i don't know now they intend to both offer a competitive price and deter box breakers with the same price.
