Yep you got it, and it was me who said that the £7.50 comes out of our credit, not someone else :p

I am probably gonna do the same as you as long as I still get my 300 free texts as well as the data.

Cool! Sounds good.

I was kinda worried that you had to top-up each month with call credit, in addition to the £7.50 bolt-on, in order to get the bolt-on to work.

As I don't make many calls, I had visions of me having an ever-increasing, unused, calling credit as I was forced to top-up each month!

Lol! I am in the same position as you, I never call, only text and if I had data I would use it non-stop :p

Its always good to have some spare credit, though, I always find, which is what this will give you.

Like I said, as long as I still get my free texts then I will be doing this, too.

Hmm, hang on. I read in another thread that O2's data bolt-on, called "Web Bolt On", does not allow email, only web browsing.

I checked the O2 site, and it says:

The O2 Web Bolt On can only be used for internet browsing on your phone.

Huh? Web browsing only? No email, no "general data"? So no maps, no app store, no anything other than Safari?

All it says is

O2 Web Bolt On
The Web Bolt On allows you unlimited use (subject to this excessive usage policy) of Telefónica O2 UK's GPRS/ 3G networks (as applicable to your handset), for personal internet use via your mobile phone. All usage must be for your private, personal and non-commercial purposes. You may not use your SIM Card:
- in, or connected to, any other device including modems;
- to allow the continuous streaming of any audio / video content, enable Voice over Internet (Voip), P2P or file sharing; or
- in such a way that adversely impacts the service to other O2 customers.
If O2 reasonably suspects you are not acting in accordance with this policy (including where you use an atypical volume of data as compared to normal users of the O2 Web Bolt On, which will normally be less than 200MB of usage within a one month period), O2 reserves the right to impose standard browsing charges (see www.o2.co.uk for details), impose network protection controls which may reduce your speed of transmission, remove the Web Bolt On from your account or disconnect your tariff at any time, having attempted to contact you first.
To OPT IN to the O2 Web Bolt On send a free text message containing the keyword "WEB" to 21300 or call free on 2425 from your O2 mobile.
One month minimum term applies. To OPT OUT send a free text message containing the keyword "WEBOFF" to 21300 at least 48 hours before the next payment is due or alternatively call free on 2425 from your O2 mobile.
You may OPT IN or OPT OUT of the service at anytime. However the minimum charge is the monthly fee of £7.50. No refunds will be given.
Benefits of your O2 Web Bolt On apply to use in the UK only. A maximum of one O2 Web Bolt On can be added to your mobile at any one time.
O2 Web Bolt Ons apply to GPRS WAP and/or i-mode but not Circuit Switched WAP. You must have a GPRS handset and your SIM must be GPRS enabled in order to use the O2 Web Bolt On.
Please note O2 Web Bolt Ons cannot be used in conjunction with the WAP 500, Browse & Download or O2 Active Browsing Bolt Ons.
You must have a minimum of 60 pence on your handset balance in order to make a GPRS connection in the UK.
General Bolt On Terms & Conditions apply.

Nothing about it only being on the internet, and even if it did it is impossible to make sure we just use the net, sure they could stop us using e-mail by blocking the e-mail servers and the mail sites but why? I dont think they will limit it to just Safari.

Also, we dont even know if we will need the bolt-on, the iPhone could have some special deal.

o2 have done their homework. Whether you go Pay As You Go on a SIMplicity style package or take out the contract you will roughly pay an equivalent amount of money over the course of the 18 months.

8GB Contract:

£35 x 18 + £99 iPhone = £729

8GB PAYG

£15 + £7.50 bolt on x 18 + £269 iPhone = £674

The question is whether you want the bulkier up front cost and flexibility it affords you, or the cheaper entry point that the contract provides.

Also those buying on PAYG most likely won't be getting free OS updates and will have to pay like Touch owners. Or whether you will get Cloud and BT Openzone access.

So dose this mean that i can use my o2 simplicity in a iphone???

i used the pay and go web bolt on (which has different conditions from the pay monthly web bolt on) and i could not get email on my iphone through the mail app and i couldn't access the aol mail webpage although google mail seemed to be accessible. google maps worked fine.

i guess they'll either change the pay and go web bolt on to allow email or there will be a different special pay and go deal. if it's the latter, it may mean that there will no longer be the free texts or minutes when toping up.

I see the Italian PAYG/pre-paid phone prices are 499 Euro for the 8GB and 569 Euro for the 16GB.

That's £395 and £451.

Ouch. But I guess that must give a ballpark figure on the UK price for PAYG, I guess.

Hmm, back to the iPod touch for me?

They will struggle for sales if they set the U.K. price at this level.

My God, you can buy a reasonable laptop for that sort of money!

Don't forget, they will still be locked to O2.

My guess, like others, is £269 (8GB) and £329 (16GB).

Anyone know when O2 are going to tell us?

I'm hoping the delay in announcing a price is because they're still working out a killer deal!

But it really depends on the whole package. As the current web bolt-on for PAYG doesn't allow email, there will hopefully be a set of iPhone-specific data bolt ons.

Otherwise you'd need to go for the monthly contract, which I have no need for, so it's back to the iPod touch.

£395 sounds about right...check out the cheapest you can buy the N95 8GB on PAYG its still around £380 and thats with a phone thats been around a while.
Anyone who thinks that the iPhone PAYG price is going to be somewhere around £269 is in for a disappointment.

Im on o2 PAYG and you can only use to o2 email server for emails, i have tried using others and none of them work. When i went to the o2 shop the guy said there that if i wanted other email such as push i would need to go on contract. o2 might create a new bolt on services for iPhone which allows you to do this, but they might not because this would encourage people to go onto contracts with them.

And I think anyone who thinks unlimited data payg for iPhone will be £7.50 will be disspointed. The stats say iPhone users use a lot more data. I think the price will be higher! I suppose its all the balance between phone cost and mins/text/data. I guess o2 must expect a lot of payg will be looking for unlimited data.....

Obviously I don't want to jump the gun as O2 have yet to release plan details, but all up I think it's looking like the PAYG option is going to be rather expensive, not just for the handset but if you want to take advantage of some kind of custom iPhone data bolt-on.

£380 is the price for sim free N95 8GB, that's technically not the same as it being available on PAYG.

Mobiles are usually cheaper when they're released by the networks in PAYG packaging.

The most expensive phone on O2 PAYG is the Sony-Ericsson K850i - £239.99, I'd be very surprised if the iPhone was any more than £299.99.

Do sites like hotmail.com and mail.google.com still work? If so I will use that, Google even done a Google Mail interface for Mobile Safari.

I do not have that bolton everyone was talking about but i get 1mb free when i topup £10 or more, I have just checked and I can get onto a google mail account. I think it is just the ports for other services such a pop mail other than to the o2 server that are blocked, I have never had a problem accessing any webpage before.

with the pay and go bolt on, i found that google mail was accessible but aol mail was not. i didn't try hotmail.

Yeah, I remember that, just messing with Opera Mini on my 6230... Was... Fun :p

Thats good, as I use Google Mail ;)

Hotmail is **** :D

I really can't see the iPhone costing £395 on PAYG. O2 will want to sell these phones, not have them sitting around for years til the price drops.

As someone else posted, £380 if the price for a SIM FREE Nokia N95 8GB. Handsets on Sim Free are always far more expensive. (I have a Nokia 6300 which costs £70 on PAYG whereas the Sim Free price is £140-£145).

I think the 8GB iPhone on PAYG will be somewhere near the price of the 16GB iPod Touch. They may not even release the 16GB iPhone on PAYG.

Also what to remember is that o2 Web Bolt On is designed for use of o2 Active services, through a normal phone WAP interface, not for a heavy data device like the iPhone, it only has a 200mb data limit, which is why it carries the relatively low £7.50 price tag, because it is relatively useless. they sell another one called Web Max, which is £22.50, which is a 3gb limit.

Historically, PAYG has always been a rip off in the UK, unless you are at the very low usage end of the market (desired monthly spend £10 or less) the £15 o2 simplicity deal blasts most PAYG deals out of the water. I see nothing from o2 or Apple to suggest the PAYG iPhone will be anything else. If Simplicity is available on old iPhones, then for £15 + data you have with no contract what originally cost £35.
