Good to see that Apple is continuing to help subsidize the development of solid state storage with their massive purchases. If the 64GB flash has dropped to $599 (and it's actually 32x2), hopefully the lower component cost will deliver us a 32GB iPhone by Christmastime.

Oh, and update the buyer's guide - if LCD price drops constitute an update, then this probably does too.

I know this was discussed prior, but I don't think SSD is the same as the iPhone/Touch storage. I could be wrong, but I think they are different.

wow, about time. That price always seemed a little bit extreeme

Not really, it wasn't extreme when it was introduced back in January.

The prices on SSD drives have fallen like a rock. SSDs that originally cost $4,000 a year ago now cost $500. Or less.

OCZ just announced a new set of 2.5" SSDs - $259 for a 64GB drive and $479 for a 128GB SSD. With r/w rates of 120/80MB/s.

I'd still wait for revision 2.... but its good to see Apple acknowledge the precipitous drop in SSD prices compared to January when it was introduced.

AMEN!!!!!! Preach on! Preach on! Preach ON!!

*although, I still love the complete and utter dominance of the MBP....Mmmm, delicious!*

Stop wasting your time, why are you so upset that there is different laptop options for Apple users anyway?

I bought one two weeks ago, and I want a refund.

I mean, if they're giving them out for the iPhone, certainly they would want to keep the loyalty of their high-end customers. I think $400 to the apple store would probably do the trick.

I haven't seen anybody except on MacRumours that would want a MacBook Air when a MacBook is a better computer and is still portable enough.

i agree. my girlfriend drags me to the mall prety much every weekend and i always manage to escape for a while and visit the apple store. honestly, i've never seen anyone purchase a MBA. sure, people stand around and look at it for a second, but always move on. never purchase or get all excited over it. not only that, but even the sales associates steer you away from it. i'll chat it up with one of them on occassion and they always same the same thing...."well, it's thin, but you could get more for your money by going with the MB or MBP". oh well.....i'm happy for the very, very, very few who even think a MBA is a good purcahse. $500 off is nice.

macbook air is really for a luxury market

the mac air is a nice machine, but it really is only for a tiny luxury market.
I have yet to see one in a public setting nor do i know anyone that has one.
I am a college professor and none of my students could afford one.

I think apple missed the boat on this one, the price is just not competitive with other laptops, especially the way the US economy is going down the tubes.

The difference in thickness does not justify the price for most people. Thats why macbooks are doing better in sales overall.

I would rather get a mackbook. For a THOUSAND DOLLARS LESS you get the top of the line macbook with the same screen size, and plus you get more usb ports, actually have firewire, has a damn superdrive. 186 gb more drive space, stereo headphones, and the video out hookups, plus 2 more gigs of ram. plus the fact its a better processor (2.4 vs. 1.8). And at least you can replace the battery, hard drive, expand the ram and such all yourself.

I'm getting around 4 hours on macbook and thats still pretty impressive compared to most of the laptops on the market

logic says the higher the price the better the product. but in the mba case, the price is just all for looks. No way would I spend a thousand dollars more because I want to save .003 inches in my bag.
I would rather get a macbook air. For just 2500 DOLLARS you get the thinnest macbook with the same screen size, and plus, an SSD. I never use more then one USB port, firewire, or a damn superdrive. I don't use 7 kajillion GB of space. I don't need 4 GB of RAM in a laptop. I don't need a 2.4 GHz processor. And I have NEVER replaced the battery in a laptop before.

Clearly, the MBA is not for you, as it's aimed towards a certain audience, and your not in that audience. I am :D

The only thing on my computer is... music, apps, and a few documents.

Plus, it's two pounds lighter.

It would be nice if they eventually got the Air down to MacBook prices in the $1000-$1300 range. Then it would be like a simple choice for a mainstream laptop. Instead of standard vs. exotic. it would be faster and more expandable or thinner and lighter but less expandable, without price being a factor. I know someone who would love an Air but she just can't afford $1800+.

good idea, my idea is that they put the macbook and macbook air together, give the macbook a slimmer frame and the aluminum/black look, but keep all the ports and regular processor. It could happen, eventually...

I love my Macbook and saw more value in the macbook for my useage. But the air, although the screen is the same size, it's a better quality screen. the lighting is beautiful.

To all the MBA haters...

I've got to say, I have both a 2.2 SR MBP and a MBA. I do travel a lot for work, so this might be biased, but I'd say I use the MBA 70-80% of the time. It's a REALLY nice computer, and is much 'snappier' than the MBP.

BTW- it is a 1.8 with SSD. Real life, I get probably 4-4.5 hours versus 3-3.5 on my MBP. Say what you want about about SSD vs spinning drive- The MBA has a hella battery life.

The early adopter tax has been dropped. It is good to see SSD prices go down. I might consider one in a year or two.

Indeed. I would think he would have known that by now.

Edit:
and there is a micro DVI port.... and why does anyone need Ethernet anymore? what happened to wi-fi?

While wi-fi is nice, it is still slower than having an ethernet plugged in. PLus (while my mac never had this problem), I had problems with my windows machines being able to see each other wirelessly. My mac on the other hand, recognizes all my computers as soon as I fire it up.

Also at times it is more secure to turn off wifi and be plugged in (when I am doing my taxes or bill-pay through my bank). Although I live in a rural areal, so no one would really be snooping my network anyway.

Wow, I really feel bad for those early adopters.

Bout time Apple, now drop them another 500 and we'll be happy. Hey so instead of your profits being 1.5 trillion dollars, they will be 1 trillion. Guess thats still not enough for your greedy capitalist hands.

Awesome! Still too much for me, though. I wonder what caused the price drop. SSD price reductions?
That's the only thing I could think of. Remember at MWSF when SJ alluded to the MBA SSD being very expensive - he definitely did not WANT it to be so expensive. Sure, they make more $ on each machine but surely he would have liked it to be a bit cheaper so he could sell more units. The SSD price must have gone down a bit. Another option is that the SSD units weren't selling well at all.

logic says the higher the price the better the product.

Oh really, is that why in the late 1980's early 1990's the Jaguar and the Alpha-Rameo (two highly expensive cars at the time) were rated as the 2nd and 3rd worse cars by Consumer reports, just behind the Yugo?

No, remember how technology works. It costs more to try to make something smaller initially, plus newer technology costs more initially. then once the product evens out and sales increase, the price will drop. I remember buying a VCR for $400, now they are only $50. DVD players were once $100's and now you can pick one up for $28 at your local Walmart.

SSD is new technology, also at the time MBA was the lightest and smallest computer out. Now that it is a year old, and other PC makers are making smaller computers, stands to reason the prices start dropping all around.

Remember (if you are old enough) when the Commodore 64 first came out? If cost $1000 for the computer, Commodore Printer (which did text only), and the floppy drive. The 300 baud modem was $75.

While I am not in the market for a MBA (macbook suits my needs), I welcome the price drop.
