Some people here are a little bit hurt ego wise that their precious OPINIONS on the mba not getting an upgrade in the coming 6 months or so and going along the way of the mini that they can't comprehend what I wrote before or think I am wrong:

These are some great news, did they change ssd type/manufacturer? So much for all the naysayers who don't think we ll see an mba 2 in the coming months...how about in one day 500 less

Which means (to translate it to those who since proven wrong have had a sudden iq drop and can't seem to get it) that apple isn't going the mini way any time soon, and that they will agressively follow technological change with the mba and hence also update soon. :apple::D

Fire sale. Think Cube.

Yep, every time Apple lowers a price on something it is clear that it is a failure and will soon be dumped... just like when they cut the prices on those iPods.
Man, those iPods were such a bad idea, Jobs should have been fired for such a lame product

yes. just like the iMac, MacBook, and iPhone. :p

I have to smile that a couple of days ago there was a thread somewhere on here comparing Dell's prices to Apples with a few comments that Apple were overcharging for the SSD. Now they've dropped it by $500, some people seem to think it's because they're having to drop it because it's not selling. The reason for the price drop is simple - SSD's have come down in price
The MBA has consistently topped the sales list on Apples store in more than one country and is in a strong position in Amazon's sales too. I bought my MBA in the full knowledge that there would be a big price drop as the manufacturing cost of SSDs fell and was happy to do so because I've had months of use out of my "extra" $500 :D

No Firewire, no purchase.
No true ethernet port, no purchase.
No video out, no purchase.
Just a single USB port, no purchase.

That easy to make it right!

.... maybe a macbook pro is more for you?

not that the air is bad... its just not for you....

Even though I have no interest in buying a MBA. I am still excited to start buying SSD when they become financially practical.

Alot of the ultra slim laptops are priced high for the hardware that you are getting, but they are cool to see that a laptop can be that small and lightweight.

Why WiFi? Why indeed.

and there is a micro DVI port.... and why does anyone need Ethernet anymore? what happened to wi-fi?

WiFi stinks. I have one wired computer and one WiFi in my apartment and the WiFi is dog slow and drops out frequently (presumably due to interference from 3 other WiFi networks in range). No such problems exist with ethernet.

Price drops from Apple seem to be more common these days

Hmm, price drops are something unfamiliar in the Mac community. It seems Apple are feeling some pressure to compete more on price. First it was Aperture seeing two price drops in a year, now selling for less than half of its original price, then the iPhone price drop that had many people up in arms last year, the Mac Pro RAID card $200 price drop in January and now this.

I like.

Hey, could be like Microsoft... in the next release cut out features but raise the price a couple hundred dollars.

But seriously after comparing specs. Macbook is more value for the money.

Macbook air is for people who want a small lightweight computer for always being on the go. I can think of the business man and college professor.

It comes with the DVI adapters.

• MacBook Air
• 45W MagSafe Power Adapter, AC wall plug, and power cord
• Micro-DVI to DVI adapter
• Micro-DVI to VGA adapter
• Display polishing cloth
• Install/restore DVDs

For me, if I was someone who did presentations all day, and moved about the campus or in out of buildings - this would be my choice. After all what looks better, someone walking in with a small portfolio, or someone with a large dumpy laptop bag or briefcase. Not to mention getting through security at a company or airport would be quicker (stick the air in a pocket of your portfolio, rather than having to deal with a laptop bag that must have every pocket checked and swabbed).

Like someone said earlier - it is for the right person and marketted as such.

Plus if you have the right portfolio - you open the portfolio and there is your computer right next to everything else you need. No need to sit it on the table or take up someone else's desk while meeting with a client.

For the person who said only 1 USB. Seeing this is a computer for the person who is on the go, why would you need more? although for the rare time you would actually plug into someone elses's network, I can see needing 2. 1 for the ethernet adapter and one for a USB remote.

I will probably buy one sometime next year. I'm waiting for it to improve a little more

Then there is something wrong with your wifi connection. My wired connection is approx 20 MBPS, and my wireless connection is 6 MBPS. I can't even tell the difference between the two unless I'm downloading a huge file.

the mac air is a nice machine, but it really is only for a tiny luxury market...

I think apple missed the boat on this one, the price is just not competitive with other laptops, especially the way the US economy is going down the tubes.

The difference in thickness does not justify the price for most people. Thats why macbooks are doing better in sales overall.

I agree completely. Apple missed the target market on this machine. Its lacks in power, battery life, and ports. The real "next frontier" for laptops is the very inexpensive machines by ASUS and the like. To me, the macbook air is worth about $799. It should have been priced and placed as a better, slightly more expensive version of the cheapy machines dominating the market.

When will that SSD be in the Touch?!

No Firewire, no purchase.
No true ethernet port, no purchase.
No video out, no purchase.
Just a single USB port, no purchase.

First of all.. WHAT? Is that english?

Second of all what does that have to do with the price drop? The price drop is the only point of this thread.

I think Mac Rumors should get rid of the thread rating. no matter what the thread, it could be "Apple giving away free computers to anyone who asks" there will always be a 20% negative rating. It's so pointless.

Are you actually upset that the price of the SSD has dropped substantially?? Are you just not into the Macbook Air, in which case, you should not be clicking a negative rating to this thread.

Not Again! Remember iPhone.

 Okay I love price drops. Lower prices much better hands down but it seems that Apple is been doing this often recently. Remember iPhone? I don't want to lose my confidence to Apple when it comes to their product pricing incosistencies. It's just unfair for early adopters one year later should be the best time to lower their product prices.

Anyone who cares about security.
well I'm not using Ethernet, unless it's a desktop. If you have a password on your wifi there shouldn't be a problem. I thought the whole point of a laptop was portability. There's not much portability if your plugging a huge yellow cord into your laptop.
