SOLUTION THAT WORKED FOR ME:
After many tries, I realized that the problem was gmail account.
So I deactivated gmail account from mail app and I went to gmail website and from the preferences I chose to forward emails to my apple mail.
After that, no more mail problems.

Interesting. I will have to give this a try.

that's a horrible solution. :)

preferable to just dump Apple Mail.

Oh weird - just stumbled across this thread while browsing. the forums on a slow day at work!

Yep exactly the same issue here. Gmail too.

Can't offer any advice, just adding myself to the numbers.
Hope it gets fixed - it is rather annoying

Well like all of you this has been driving me crazy for months.

But thanks to "tomviolence" on page 3 here he really does offer a wonderful, easy tactic to stop the annoyance. It's something I had never heard of before. It is not a fix, but it is a solution to the problem.

After you have finished reading your mail, don't close the window because it will pop up again, instead hit command+H and that closes the window (hides it actually) while the app is still running, and any new emails will still show in the counter in the dock. (a solution similar to minimizing the mail window, but this one is out of sight, just like closing the window)

Truly elegant and awesome work around.

Wait! I spoke too soon. It just popped up! Shame on me.

Well minimizing works....I know that for sure.

ditching gmail actually works.
I tried two things that indicate it is gmail. First I got the popups to reduce in frequency by having Mail only check for mail every 15 minutes. The Mail window only can up every 15 minutes. I then reset it to automatically get mail but disabled both of my gmail accounts and the window did not popup. Obviously something to do with Gmail.

Hello. since updating to the newest macOS Mojave update, Mail has been opening by itself periodically and it getting very annoying and I don't know what is prompting it. If I am in full-screen mode, mail will open and take up the right side of the screen also. I have tried reinstalling the operating system over the current installation to see if the system could rebuild itself and fix the issue but this was not successful. Thank you for your help.
[doublepost=1558669797][/doublepost]Also, I installed the supplemental update on my 2018 MacBook Pro, and this did not fix the issue. Also, Mail is not in my startup items.

Heya!

Was having the same issue, go to mail settings and untick, open in full screen

see the screenshot attached.

I have the same problem. Have the "open in full screen" unticked. Also, updated to Catalina today and the problem is not solved.
Apple software goes from bad to worse, with every single update..

I don’t use gmail and it happens to me. Drives me bananas... for the person that asked “why is it such a big deal?”, for me I don’t like my email opening randomly at work or in a place where people can walk by and see a good bit of information on my personal or work emails:-/ just a privacy thing really. Additionally I think it’s frequently keeping my computer from going to screensaver for long periods of time. Thanks for all the ideas guys- hope this gets worked out at some point

And I thought that I was going crazy. I decided to try the mail app when I got my 2018 mini. Mail opens by itself all the time. I think that I’ll just go back to checking my email in a browser.

There is a workaround… I use my Gmail account just for E-mail, and have it set to IMAP.
  1. Set up an app specific E-mail password for your Google account via myaccount.google.com/security (you will have to have two-factor authentication enabled).
  2. Delete your Gmail account from your System preferences (careful: this will delete your mails from your computer).
  3. Add your Gmail account via the Apple Mail preferences using the ‘Other mail account’ setting, not the Google one in the list, using the app specific password you set up.
  4. Your E-mails that are on the Gmail server will download again to your computer.

I can affirm that this solution is correct, I have not had a pop-up mail window since. The problem seems to have something to do with setting up gmail in the system preferences/internet accounts using Google.

Has anyone else noticed that they've added a new feature in 10.15.1? I notice that since upgrading, now when the mail window pops up and interrupts my day there's a new annunciator visible in the Mail app's window. I see a little "/!\ Login Failure" message in the very upper right-hand corner of the Mail window now when it pops up.

Previously the only visual indicator of a problem was that I could sometimes catch the little failure symbol on the Mailboxes side bar next to the account that triggered the behavior.

I've tried a few times to catch a screen shot, but the notification disappears too quickly and I've never managed to screen cap in time.

This seems to happen regardless if you get new mail but only when it "checks for new mail". Same symptoms as everyone else. All recommended gmail, google calendar and mail app settings tried to no avail.

I heard somewhere that if tou set your google account to smtp it will solve the issue. But i dont know where to set it in google.

This has been annoying my son for months, but has never happened to me in 15 years on Mac OS.

I found this site with tips, but most appear to have been covered in comments here throughout the month. https://www.saintlad.com/mail-app-opens-randomly-mojave/

Tonight, I went through ever setting between my son's computer and mine, and the only difference I found was that I don't synchronize Google Calendar. I unchecked his sync, given he doesn't use it.....

I know Google Calendar uses email to respond and for reminders, and has calendar iCal attachments, so there's some chance this is the source of the issue. However, all this might be on the server side, and disabling Calendar sync might still send these calendar related emails to Mac Mail.

I also realize disabling Google Calendar is ridiculous solution, but its a "step" better than not using Mail at all. If this doesn't work, I'll probably try connecting SMTP (instead of IMAP).

He was also considering just setting it to manual sync of email, instead of timed or Auto.

Maybe it may sound strange, but in my case the problem with mail app was caused by an interference with my bluetooth mouse. I have apple bluetooth keyboard, airpods and non apple bluetooth mouse. You can also experience some problem with mouse like laggy movement or click button not always registered. These symptoms point to blouetooth interference which also cause the mail app problem.
I changed the connection of my mouse from bluetooth to wifi dongle and the problem disappears.
I hope this will help others as well.
