of course Matt, that is always the case. But it should not be though because way too many people have been having problems with recent updates. I can live with it, but there is no doubt in my mind that these updates were poorly managed by Apple. Especially when I consider that I have absolutely no plug-ins, third party apps or strange things running on my Mac. It is as clean as it gets as I basically run Apple only apps, except for one or two games.

By the way talking about games, Doom 3 rocks on my Mac !

Do the Java update FIRST!!!!

I did as the security page said:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301380

But I started the download of both the Java update and the Security update at the same time. Well, the Sec. update is 16 MB and the Java 26 so the Security update started its installation process first.

What a bummer! It totally locked up the Java update later and even Applecare rep.s don't have clue of what to do.

What a rotten update this was!

Dalriada, I am with you on both counts. I don't truly believe Apple would do that, however everything makes me believe so. And you are absolutely right staying with 10.3.7, gee I loved that one, I only wish it was not such a gigantic pain in the behind to go back there.

I guess it boils down to how many head counts at Cupertino are left to work on updating 10.3.xxx whilst others working full steam on Tigeeeeeer. I know which project I'd choose...

I tried the Terminal test and received:

"1.4.2_05"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_05-141.4)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-38, mixed mode)

No problems! :D

I second this statement. I wonder what the link is. Time to get "CSI Cuportino" involved! I bet they can debug this in less than 60 minutes!

Safari 1.3 crashes on launch

Both my ibook and emac were affected to the point where they simply did not start safari. I just reinstalled 1.2 Safari and now it's great. Strange - but I don't get the segmentation message in terminal....*scratches head*
Safari 1.3 crashes like you describe (in the absence of the Java problem) are likely due to Plugins that are incompatible with the updated Safari. Check your Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins folder for these. Common "offenders" are AcidSearch and PithHelmet. (Both have already been updated for Safari 1.3.) So, remove those from that folder (or install the updates) and Safari may well run fine for you.

BTW, I find that Safari 1.3 loads pages much faster than earlier versions. Its layout engine is "virtually identical" to that of Safari 2.0 in OS X 10.4 Tiger.

No Problems Here. Works great. speedy too. Just to make sure I SSHed to my home computer from work, to do the "java -version" test, and got no issues. :D

Ok, this is messed up. What causes this to happen only on a certain setups. Whats the program or setup causes this to happen, or is it just random? I'm unaffected but its still annoying that CNet of course posts the problem like it was the end of the world and it doesn't even affect every user.

This is annoying and I'm not updating until this weekend. I have a presentation to do and don't want anything affected. I have a bad feeling...

Maybe it's all part of a new ad campaign.

Life is random. So are java glitches.

Hmm... This is odd. I tried "java -version" and it returned without a segmentation fault, but I still have unexpected quits when I simply press OA - Q in Safari... Any ideas?

hey guys!

i'm a long time lurker, and a first time replier!

i get the 'segmentation fault' error.

was just wondering, if i install the update, will all be fine and dandy? there hasn't been any more issues i'm to be aware of?

thanks
Rowan

there shouln't be

in my experience

10.3.7 was SOLID
10.3.8 was AWFUL, I had to reinstall OSX and go to .3.7
10.3.9 Java issue aside has been ok.

good good! Tiger has been pre-ordered anyhow! :D

i do have a wee problem though.
i downloaded the update installer of the web address noted above, but when i go to install, it wont let me, as it informs me that the version of java i have installed does not need updated??

i've probably done something stupid, but i'm a tad lost now!

I've gone through every update and not had any problems with ANY of them on my G5 PM. Maybe I'm just lucky? It's just hard to fathom why only certain machines are affected. I have loads of non apple programs (although no plug ins) but still have no problems. I'm upgrading to Tiger though. ~Josh

Shame on Apple.

Shame on Apple for releasing an update that makes such an obvious flaw in systems. (I don't have any third-party plugin's on my system).

Shame on Apple for not making the fix to this problem more visible (I see nothing about it on the main Apple page or the main support page).

Shame on Apple for making its user do the work to see if they have the problem and for having to install the updates. They need to put a patch into Software Update. (or at least pull 10.3.9)

How many novice users feel comfortable using Terminal (or can even find it)? How many novice users (i.e. grandma) know to go looking around for the Knowledge Base article about how to fix this?

This was very Microsoft of Apple.

This really makes me doubt how stable Tiger will be if they couldn't even find a Java flaw in 10.3.9.

I never had any (major) problems with any Apple updates, either (wasn't even seriously affected by the infamous 10.2.8 update, even if I installed within minutes of its release)... so I guess we're bot lucky... ;)

10.3.7 rock, ROCK, solid
10.3.8 my mac would crash every third or fourth wake up from sleep
10.3.9 my mac crashes randomly. Worse than XP for sure.

Take a look at the Apple support site and you'll know I am not alone.

Yeah, my computer freezes randomly waking from sleep also. Quite annonying. Another problem i get is when i change the batteries in my bluetooth mouse, the mouse freezes. I have to reboot to get the services of my mouse. I hope and pray that one day, some version of OSX will solve that problem

CONCLUSION: Apple is making sure everyone will want to purchase TIGER. No other explanation.

PM FW 1.25 2x 1.25gig

Nah, the real explanation that flows from this is that as Tiger became more and more stable - there were fewer and fewer 10.3.x testers - most of them had moved on to testing Tiger. As a result, more stuff was making it through the cracks because the testing environment (internal and external testers) wasn't diverse enough.

yeh the 10.3.9 update messed up my os. whenever i install updeates now such as the imovie 5.0.2 and the iphoto, and idvd it messes up my permissions for the applications folder so i have to redo those, and also it messed up my java(but i fixed that) and then safari unexpectadly quits all the time and etc.

its annoying. can't wait till tiger! have it preorder and evferything.
gunna do a full install and reformat so its like a new computer!

Thank goodness this has been fixed. (Just updated) I was forced to use i.e. there for a while!

This is the only update that i've ever had problems with. Lets keep it that way Apple.
