In regards to Spotlight missing tons of files, I've had the opposite happen where files go missing, but they show up in Spotlight, when you do a specific search for those 'missing' files.

Case in point, doing a screen grab, the picture.png files don't show up on the desktop, but doing a search in Spotlight, and clicking on the files will make them appear on the desktop.

Seems Apple rushed out Tiger, but in due time, after maybe 2 or 3 updates, it'll be stable enough to be trusted.

I love Mail 2.0. Compared to the old Mail, it looks much more compact, smoother and suited for professional use. Thank God they got rid of the drawers. That was pretty damn ugly.

Really?

That's one of the reasons I like OSX. Drawers are are very clever way of allowing you to reduce screen clutter. Many other applications still use them such as iCal, Image Capture, Pages, iDVD....

They were a step forward in interface design. The 3 pane fixed to the left list of Mail 2.0 is a step backward, consumes more space than the drawer and why the hell is it pale blue? It's just completely wrong.

The only way I am able to open anything into Adobe CS is by launching the app and then selecting the open menu. I can't double click, go from iPhoto, drag to the dock icon, etc.

This is a known issue every time you do an archive and install of OS X with the Adobe apps. Not unique to Tiger. Find the file

/Library/ScriptingAdditions/Adobe Unit Types

in your archived or old system and copy it to the same place in the new system. Then your files will open themselves up the Adobe app when you double click them like they are supposed to.

BCC is the greatest addition :)

The new look is sleek and justified. The previous versions had big icons.
I see what they did was basically grouped common functions together (rounded button groupings) as to distinguish them easier. as well as tighten up the wasted room.

It is easier to see the function buttons now.

Although it WOULD be nice to be able to control the size of font for the mailboxes. Why are things getting so much smaller these days.. my eyes are starting to hurt. (unless I am missing something, these fonts can't be increased)

This is not true. In Mail prior to 2.0 you could use either small icons, which were the same size as 2.0 or large icons. The drawer allowed for more rows of mailboxes in it than 2.0 as it started from below the titlebar. In 2.0 it starts below the toolbar so you lose 2 lines of mailboxes.

And they've removed the status bar also, so there's less on the screen but it takes up MORE space.

The new icons are less legible than the old ones. Which came first - anaemic white arrows or the grey buttons behind them?

The fact there's now TWO tools to replace the icons when before nobody gave a monkeys about them is pretty much proof that they've goofed up this time. Mail Fixer looks very promising though as we should be able to more easily replace them with new themes that look like MacOSX buttons.

It's not entirely bad news as the mailbox pane if closed acts like a drawer anyway if you drag a mail from the list to the side of the window the pane reappears. The only problem there is that it's slower to reappear than the old drawer and it always appears on the left regardless of dragging the mail left or right.

I don't mind the different UI themes in OSX - more the better - but someone at Apple should come up with a Theme Manager tool like Shapeshifter to allow a consistent change across all applications.

I wonder if by 10.5 we'll be outraged at Apple for copying Shapeshifter's ideas just like we have in the past for Spotlight/Quicksilver, Dashboard/Konfabulator or Watson/Sherlock. PathFinder would be a good 'influence' for 10.5 too.

I didn't know that

Clean install is the way to go with every major upgrade.

You mean that I shouldn't still be using a system volume that started out as an NT 4.0 system in Jan of 1998? Do Mac people really need to reformat the hard drive every year?

This system's gone from NT 4 plus each of the SPn to Win2000 beta to Win2000 then plus each SPn to XP beta to XP to XP sp1 to XP sp2. (It's also gone from a 266 MHz PII to a 2.6 GHz P4, but that's a separate thread.)

I'd planned to upgrade to the Longhorn beta - do you think that a clean install would be a better idea?

I don't think alot of people liked this comment. I sure did. :)

Look! All this talk about the bugs in OS X is like dejavu from prior updates. There will always be bugs with each new big upgrade. Most got too excited and just bought it despite the risks. I use my computer for a living so I can not afford to have serious problems. When the software I use is compatible with the new system, I will upgrade. Now had Apple released a much better G5 I would have gladly taken Tiger with the new system.

I assume that you are being serious even though some of me thinks you are being sarcastic. No, you don't need to do a clean install with each major update. I just find that by doing so you get rid of all the garbage you have collected along the way. Things like small apps I have tried and no longer use - their preferences are still there. Then there are caches and logs etc. I find my system being a lot cleaner and smaller. Don't try to convince me that you don't have the same thing on the windows world. There have been many a time when my friends have gotten so bogged down by what I describe plus viruses, spyware, etc. that they wipe their hard drive and start over. Some of them have gotten sick of it and bought a mac and wonder how they ever put up with their PC.

No more than Windows people. But with both, sometimes it is better. I've done it a couple of times on my Windows 2000 machine. The first upgrade from 98 wasn't great. I suppose the upgrade to XP or Longhorn might be smoother, but at this point I don't plan on upgrading any time soon. I've upgraded Macs from OS 9 without issue, and for a lot of people I know the 10.x upgrades all went just fine.

You shouldn't take one comment on a forum as gospel. It's the same as with Windows - recommended, but not necessary. Plus, um, you can install the new OS fresh without formatting the hard drive. Just Archive and Install.

Quicktime 7

My biggest problems are two: QT 7 and Firefox.

QT -- first of all, the cause of the "frozen, minimized movie in the dock bug" is DiVx 5.2.1. Downgrade to 5.1.1 and solve the problem.

Streaming videos, on a random basis, refuse to display. Apple's are fine, but others turn into a big icon and a question mark.

And Firefox just will not launch. I'm at my wit's end on that one. It bounces in the icon, then launches its callback program and exits. I've tossed prefs, reinstalled -- I just can't figure it out.

I had that exact problem, and buggybear came up with the solution: dump MRJplugin.plugin (or other suspicious plug-ins I had another Java plugin there as well) from ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins (if you don't have any there check if you have any 3rd party plug-ins in /Library/Internet Plug-ins)... :)

Edit: It's actually described on the previous page of this thread...

Since my FF works, and I ported over my profile, I just wanted to mention that TabBrowser Extensions, AdBlock and Safarish (which are what I had installed) all work fine in Tiger without being upgraded.... I guess somewhere there ought to be a list of danger plugins for Firefox and Tiger, if there isn't already. :) I didn't see such a list anywhere, though. Maybe I'll make a thread.

EDIT: Can all the Firefox/Tiger users please take a second to add to this thread? Thanks! :D

On number one are you referring to Bluetooth or a wireless network? My wife has a 15" PowerBook and since Tiger her wireless reception has improved. Many times all the bars are filled.

Wireless.

You are correct reception has improved.

The problem is you lose your DHCP lease if you move around a wireless area where there is WDS set-up.

Mail App.

Personally, i love the new mail app. LOVE IT. it is so muich more orgonized and everything. I wish the finder would take a Que from it. i hate the metal for the finder. Another thing, why the helldoes there have to be a finder in the dock? this seems pointless, the finder should be the system, not an app in it.

One of the big metaphors for OS X is that the Finder is just another app and not the system at all. It's also in the dock to give you quick access to a Finder window when you can't see the desktop, etc. I think that Finder is in the dock because it's always running, and it is the first icon (maybe along with the Trash) that is loaded at startup. It would be nice to be able to move it around the dock, but I don't think it's a huge problem.

If the Finder used the new "plastic" style, I'd be a happy camper, too. Maybe someone will add this ability. Or maybe it can already be done. The plastic look is available on Safari, IIRC.

Kool i cant wait for this update to tiger. I have had some issues with my tablet not working after i put my CPU to sleep then come back to it. A usual restart fixes the prob. I have been shutting down now which works as well. Get us this update apple!

Personally, I have not experienced any of the listed problems with Tiger.

I think that Tiger is much improved from 10.3.9 which did seem to "hang-up" often. Also in 10.3.9 About every other time I went to open Safari it would just bounce around on my dock for 60 - 120 seconds. This has not happened yet with Tiger.

I don't get the spinning beach ball in Tiger, haven't had it for the 2 weeks using it. I think it's improved over Panther.

BWhaler;

You know, I WDLove's wife is right. (Hey WDLove, for $20 I'll pretend I never said that.) I just realized that since I installed Tiger I'm getting airport connectivity in my family room, which is the only place in the house I couldn't get it before.

Not bad, Apple. Another "Nice Hustle!" from Coach Wade!

If you knew it wasn't the right thread, then why didn't you post it in the right thread? :p ;)

Cause I thought that I could get away with it seeing how it was page 8 or so of this thread.

Man...you guys are sharp.

Anyway, I would still like to find an answer :p

It seems that the only ones I can find are for PC. :(

Heh heh - well, I don't have any answers for you (just bastardly remarks) so for added feedback you may want to try posting in the "Mac Hardware" forum and seeing if anyone there can help who is more up on that sort of thing.
