Hopefully this will fix my problems with loosing my DHCP Ip addy every so often on wireless.

No one else has had a problem with Java apps not running at all? (and "java -version" causing a segmentation fault)

I made a thread about it a few days ago, but no one replied.

I've had very strange behavior of scroll bars in safari. Sometimes the vertical scroll separates into pieces like the mercury in an old thermometer. Today I had a safari window with the horizontal scroll across the center of the window!

I have the same issues.

So there are issues with some D-Link items, huh? Ever since I installed Tiger, my wireless router seems to be malfunctioning. All the lights are blinking....my signal is great. Then, the lights on the router go out, I lose the connection to the network all together...then in a couple of seconds, boom, I am back on! Is this related to Tiger, or is this a coincidence? It's a DI-524.

I have that router and this happened to me too! Only that my router hasn't worked ever since I installed Tiger on one of the computers in my LAN, only that I didn't believe that Tiger could be the cause. Thought it was just a coincidence.
My DI-524 resets itself about every minute. Very annoying.... Maybe shortening the computer name could work as someone suggested?

There's a bug in the D-Link firmware where it can't handle host names greater than 20 characters. It's not a Tiger bug. Maybe Tiger just names computers differently than Panther?

I've had the D-Link router problems, too. When I installed Tiger my computer's named was "automatically" named MY FULL NAME's PowerBook G4 15". That didn't happen in Panther. This naming scheme probably is the problem...

My "Preview" quit itself while enlarging view of JPEG files....
even worse, OS total crash 4 times within 2 hours while i open several app.
Tiger become heavy while doing heavy task
is it beause i am a g4?!....

10.4.1 please.....quick...... :(

My "Must Fix List" for 10.4.1

1. Dropping wireless
2. Spotlight missing tons of files
3. Buggy cut and paste in Mail
4. Bugs and hangs in Dashboard

There are thousands more annoyances, but I really need these four fixed. They impact me continually through-out the day.

I use Firefox like crazy and haven't had any problems at all yet.
Yes, I know everybody else's Firefox works just fine... but something broke mine, and I have no idea what, and I haven't got the time for a complete clean install just yet... so I'm biting the bullet and using Safari 2 until I can get it fixed... :(

Not a totally unpleasant experience, BTW, but I miss the adblock extention (not keen on installing 3rd party "enhancers" in Safari...)

I did a clean install and so far have only experienced a few minor issues:

1. Weather widget crashes regularly
2. On occasion the performance slows down so that for example the "ripple" eye candy effect in dashboard is quite jerky and spotlight appears to be working through quicksand. I have an "ultimate" 15" PBook config so I assume this is something to do with the spotlight indexing process affecting performance in some way.
3. At first Safari appeared to be a hell of a lot snappier than I remembered. I then decided to restore my Safari settings to retrieve my bookmarks and since then it seems to have lost that initial "snappiness". In hindsight I should have simply rebuilt the bookmarks but there you go...

Apart from the above I have not to date experienced any of the other problems mentioned here. In particular I use photoshop a lot and can quite happily double-click a spotlight located file, (though initially it was set to open in Preview).

I do wonder whether this version works best with an Erase and Install? It took a while reloading all my apps and saved files but after reading this thread I'm quite relieved I chose to ignore the Archive option. If this is right I would also suggest rebuilding your Safari bookmarks rather than restoring saved settings.

Finally I must say that Spotlight is absolutely brilliant. It's quickly become THE method of locating files for me. I also like the Dictionary/Thesaurus widget a lot, though in general I find Dashboard a bit over-designed. I haven't yet approached Automator, preferring instead to wait for the magazines (my favourite being iCreate) to kick-in with walkthrough examples.

So in a nutshell I am very happy upgrading to Tiger, minor bugs notwithstanding, for Spotlight alone.

10.4.1 seeded less than a week of 10.4's release? This has to be one of the top bad os releases since 10.1. I'll wait for 10.4.2/3 to see if they fix all the active directory issues yet.

What are you the ADC Police? My question was general and not specific about anything pertaining to the beta itself.

I think that I'm gonna skip Mac OS 10.4 altogether.

I'm not going to waste my money beta testing software disguised as "Golden Master".

Mac OS 10.5 will be out in about a year and a half. They might have the bugs worked out by then.

By the way, it looks like Jaguar Security Update support is just about over.

Although bear in mind that not everyone's had problems; many of those who are having trouble appear to have had plug-ins etc which have reacted oddly. And there are likely so many combinations that it wasn't going to be possible to test all of them.

The 10.3.x updates came along every couple of months with more in the early stages; why would it be any different with 10.4. With the GM being frozen at the end of March, I'd be more alarmed if they hadn't been working on 10.4.1 since then and have it ready to go.

An OS is unlikely to ever be perfect for everyone; there is a point in any project where you have to say 'it's 95% there and should be good for majority of users, let's go'. The .x updates are for increasing those %'s upwards.

There was an issue with 10.3.9 with this, and Apple released an update to fix it, also you could go back an re-install two security updates. There should still be something here but I haven't had any issues at all with 10.4 and Java, and I do a lot of Java development.

On the topic... I don't mind Apple's method at all. They could have made us all wait until June for Tiger, for me that would have been awful, because my finder would crash with 10.3.9 every time I tried to transfer files across D-Link wireless router, but now everything is OK. Also, the new features are really sweet. I've got a iBook G4 and have had no issues, but then again I did a dirty upgrade of all my machines. I'm just glad they are staying on point and not slacking off after the release. I guess all that iPod money is going to good use :)

I want:
*user switching with independant screen resolutions
*dock icons to dim when hidden
*dock magnifying glitch when contexual menu is brought up
*safari stability
*FASTER Spotlight searches. I'm on a G5 and i don't see "BOOM"
*Finder resizing/sidebar separator
*Quicktime Divx compatibility
*third party app fixes
*better font smoothing!

I can help you with the "dock icons to dim when hidden". I did this in 10.3 and it is still working for me in Tiger.

In Terminal type:

defaults write com.apple.Dock showhidden -bool yes

Hit return.

Go to Activity Monitor and quit out of the dock for the changes to take place.

- In the January 2004 Macworld.

I too wish that Quicktime would play back DIVX and every other codec imaginable. That is what I think QT8 should be. Every movie file plays back and you can save as every codec as well - Windows Media, Real, DIVX, etc. I want to have Quicktime installed and nothing else and all web pages with video content to play perfectly through quicktime.

Clean install is the way to go with every major upgrade. It just takes so long even on a PowerMac G5, and especially if you have multiple computers. I tried an Archive and Install but will be starting over in a month with a Clean Install because I will have the new Final Cut Suite and want to start fresh with that as well. I'm sure my experience will be better. Everything will be clean, I'll have more free HD space, we'll be on 10.4.1 then, etc.

The only way I am able to open anything into Adobe CS is by launching the app and then selecting the open menu. I can't double click, go from iPhoto, drag to the dock icon, etc.

Hmmm, I don't have that problem on my PB or PM (see sig). Same goes for a colleague on his PB12.

edit: ah, I see someone else posted the answer from adobe.

I doubt that. Jobs indidcated that Tiger would be the last of the "frequent" OS updates, so I think it will be quite a while before we see 10.5 being released. Panther and Tiger were both released in 1-1.5 year spans from their predecessors, so I don't think we'll see another new OS until later in 2007.

And why does it have to be 10.5? Maybe Apple will simply move to OS XI... ;)

Hope 10.4.1 fixes whatever it is that's killing Firefox on my machine... I'm not in the mood for a clean install for another month or so...

Your problem could be a plug-in. Check ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins

I had tried erasing my firefox profile, and a clean install because Firefox crashed every time in mid-launching. It turned out to be the Mozilla "MRJPlugin.plugin" that must have been incompatible with a newer version of Java.

(Luckily I had backed up my profile, and was use it again with all my cookies and bookmarks)

And since that then maby apple will give 10.4.xx updates that will bring stability and new features as well ;)

Thanks a lot... That was exactly what was wrong... :D I had both the MRJPlugin and a JavaEmbeddingPlugin... when I removed those Firefox started just fine...

(I very ashamed of the fact that I forgot the plug-ins, specially when I deleted my profile - after copying the bookmarks ;) - in the quest for the culprit...)

Now I have my Fox back again... I just have to say: Thank you, once more... :D

Of course now it has to compete with Safari 2, which has some advantages, and has grown a little on me the last three days, even though I still don't like the fact that I have to kill all plug-ins (again ironic) to stop flash ads... ;)

Slow Safari Fix

A while back, my Safari beach ball was spinning all the time.

Turned out that the culprit was lots and lots of autofill form data.

Apparently, Safari was getting hung up searching for auto-fill information on every web form. Would hope that they fixed that by now, but it's worth a shot going to "Preferences: Autofill" and unchecking or clearing out old autofill data.

Like I said in my previous post, shortening the computer name will fix the issue with the D-Link routers. At least it worked for me with my PBG4 12.1'' 1.33 Ghz with D-Link router DI-524.

On number one are you referring to Bluetooth or a wireless network? My wife has a 15" PowerBook and since Tiger her wireless reception has improved. Many times all the bars are filled.
