Yup, same problem here with a 20" intel imac. Happens intermittently. Also, this morning I had to use the Setup Assistant to get on the ol' Internets. Anyone else experiencing these problems?

Do either of you have a 2.4 GHz cordless phone? That used to drive me nuts. Every time the phone rang, Airport went funny. Bought a 5.8 GHz last Boxing Day and I've been happy every since. :D

Have you tested your uplink speed?

Westside guy said:
Huh, I've consistently gotten between 6-8mbps on my Comcast line everytime I've tested over the past several months.

I am getting 2.5 to 4.5 mbps downlink speed, but only 25 to 50 kbps uplink speed. Most people would never notice this unless they upload a few megabytes to a server or send large attachments in email.

Use the speed test at bandwidth.com and test both downlink and uplink. I spent a long time with the Comcast tech and was unabel to correct the problem. Now I suspect it may be related to one of the recent Apple updates. I am at 10.4.7.

No Problems Here

Of the nine people I know who have MBPs six (including me) received kernel panics during the final stages of the update or during the restart... no one was able to recover and everyone had to restore 10.4.x from backups.

So what about the other three MBP owners??? One successfully ran the update and the other two were contacted before they clicked the instal/download button, they are going to wait a week or so before trying it.

It is always a good idea to make sure you are completely backed up before you run any update, but this one seems to be a killer of MBPs from where I sit.

I have a 1.83GHz MBP with 1.5GB RAM, 100GB 7200 RPM drive and all is fine for me.

It did do a double restart after the update completed.

so since mac os x 10.4.8 updated, what's been changed? here is my case....
...3. after installing it, my macbook was booting twice. it's maybe something to do with firmware udpate ?

From other threads I read this is normal. My Macbook also booted twice, so when the update finished downloading I was actually hoping that it would boot twice.

Relevant Apple Discussions thread here: 10.4.8 and colours ?

That sounds awful.

FYI, I have a 30" Apple Cinema Display on a maxed out Quad Core G5, and my colors are HORRIBLE! I have blue and yellow "glitter" all over the edges of my text on screen. I do a lot of work in Aperture and all my photos in Aperture are so bad, I can't do any work. Tried to get feedback by every means I can. Hoping Apple fixes this ASAP! It's actually stopping me from work. Work that I pay my house note with. It's freakin' horrible.

But I have faith Apple will have a fix out within 48 hours. If not, I'm about to get screwed out of a ton of paying work.

Just got off the phone with the Apple support person. She had me do all the basics like check and repair the disk from booting up with the OS X cd... then reset the PRAM... but still not fixed.

Next we made a new user account, "Test", and as far as I could tell this new user account when logging into it did NOT have the blue tint issue. I'm losing confidence in my own eyes now as I've been staring at this light bluishness... but I am pretty sure that this new account looked totally fine. So- my affected accounts were the standard user account I was running during the update... and also my main admin user account.

She then had me drag my Preferences folder to the desktop, log out, and then log back in. The screen seemed to look fine at this point! SO WEIRD. So, after transfering me to a "specialist" for a second opinion, I talked with him for awhile and he is convinced that it's an incompatibility issue with one of my 136 preference files.

So basically my choices according to him are, re-setup all of my preferences and toss the old folder now on my desktop... or drag each preference file from the old one back into the new current one, ONE BY ONE and logging out and back in each time to find the culprit.

My head hurts. I'm gonna think about this awhile and keep pokin around for a better answer. I hope this helps generate some new thoughts in you other affected people.

Can anyone [with better eyes than me] confirm a new user account looks good?

I feel so silly having a hard time telling now... but maybe I'm just getting dazed. And now I'm paranoid kind of, and just want things back how they were...

No, I don't. 2.4 GHz cordless phones are not common in
Germany.

I do have a mobile at 1.8 GHz (GSM 1800) and a cordless phone at
1.9 GHz (DECT), both of them never caused any problems with WLAN
at 2.4 GHz.

I really think it's a software problem, it still works well in XP in bootcamp.

Same here. Airport just drops off randomly. I have a 802.11 b/g network and it was working fine on my brand new MB yesterday before the update.

Very annoying. No, I don't have any 2.4ghz phones either. I selected 'interface robustness', but not sure what that does.

I have a new 100GB 7200rpm drive coming on Monday, so I will be reinstalling anyway. I might not go with the 10.4.8 update until there is a fix.

At least the color issue can be fixed quite easily.

Go to a mac that is still on 10.4.7 and copy its color profile
(in my case the name was Color_LCD-4271780.icc)
in /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays to the mac
with 10.4.8 and choose this color profile in
the system settings.

In my case this fixed te "blue horror".

To rule out other frequencies it seems http://safari.oreilly.com/0321335465/ch11lev1sec21

Wireless telephones, television repeaters (including wireless video repeaters), and microwave ovens are all examples of 2.4 GHz devices that can interfere with 802.11 wireless networks. The Use Interference Robustness setting tells the AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station to rebroadcast lost packets at a higher rate than normal.

Too cold or too warm?

Man this color thing is weird. I can't decide which color is "right"... the old color profile or this new "blue" one. I keep switching back and forth between them. Anyone decide to keep the blue one?

iMac G4

Just installed it on my iMac G4 with no issues so far, wireless or otherwise. I'm holding off on the MBP until I have time to download the combo update.

Taken from the Airport Help section.

Minimizing interference in an AirPort network
You may experience network performance problems if a microwave oven or other source of interference is used frequently near your base station. To minimize interference, turn on interference robustness.

Open AirPort Admin Utility, located in Applications/Utilities.
Select your base station and click Configure. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click Wireless Options and select the "Enable interference robustness" checkbox.

Client computers with AirPort Extreme Cards must choose Use Interference Robustness from the AirPort status menu in the menu bar in order to take advantage of this feature. Client computers with earlier AirPort Cards will already take advantage of the feature.

Hope that offers some insight to what it does =)

Airport issues

Thanks for the tips and explanations. Still, this really seems to be update related. The MB is brand new and worked for 10 hours yesterday with no issues. My XP laptop is working fine. The MB is 8 feet from the router. No microwave, phones, or anything else to interfere.

Besides, shouldn't the reconnect automatically to the preferred network?

That is the annoying thing is that I have to reconnect it manually. Everytime I do that it is working again... until it drops. When it is connected it is always at full strength.

Ctrl-zoom works on Pismo with SideTrack

Just tested the Control-zoom by holding the ctrl key while scrolling on the trackpad via SideTrack.
It works! I'll have to see how this compares to the normal Command + to zoom in/out.

BTW, I got the two boot-chimes after updating, and took a couple minutes to get to the desktop.

As I stated earlier, the Translator widget has been dramatically improved;
used to take almost a minute - now get results in near real-time.

Ok, I did a quick thread search and didn't find this term, so I'll ask. Since the update, I noticed something called "SAS" in my System Profiler. Has this always been there, or is it new? I don't think I've seen it before. When i click on it, it says: "This system does not contain any SAS devices. If you have any SAS devices installed, please check that they are connected and powered on." What is this?

SAS = Serial Attached SCSI. I expect Apple is planning on supporting this, and that is good news. SAS is currently used on server hardware from vendors like Sun and Dell. It comes in 2.5" and 3.5" drives and is very fast.

How do you switch back and forth between colors?

Mac MiniTel Wireless Dropping out...

I don't know any specifics, but I have had some issues with my home connection suddenly dropping out. It's been a relatively recent development. I've always had periodic outages where I ended up restarting both my modem and my AirPort Express in order to get things working, but the last few months have seen a number of dropouts where the connection just restores itself within a few minutes without any fixes being done by me.

I have no idea whether this has anything to do with it, but it's something I've noticed recently.

I had experienced this as well prior to updating but now it doesn't fix itself. I'll come home and have no connectivity and it'll act like my closed network WPA2 connection that is within 10 ft of the computer isn't there. L A M E. Worked more reliably prior to the update.

Okay, cool. Is this new, then? I mean, new to System Profiler? I'm guessing they'll implement something like this on the MacPro or the XServe?

Probably more on the XServe side if at all....and I believe its new to the System Profiler.

livingfortoday Did You Use The PPC Combo Update?

Dang, I just noticed on my Powerbook that now I can't seem to launch Mail for more than a few seconds without it crashing since this update. Hmm... I don't see any mention of updates to Mail, is there a way to uninstall the updates to see if the problem goes away?
I have the same model PB as you 'cept 1GB ram and Mail is working just fine on mine with the update.

Did you use the PPC Combo Update or the incremental updater? I never use an incremental updater and instead always use the Combo Updater and run Repair Permissions before and after each update process. I also restarted half a dozen times after running the PPC Combo 10.4.8 Update to get the new boot code working fast. It boots really slow first time twice and each successive time it boots faster until it's booting like buttah after 5 or 6 times in nothing flat.

If not, you can still run the PPC 10.4.8 Combo Update on top of your crippled updated 10.4.8 to try and clear up any confused or missing code. Let's see if that clears up your Mail crashing problem.

Nothing wrong with ClearDock. That and its APE has never caused me any problems, and I've use it on a G3, a G4 and a MacTel over several iterations of Mac OS X... :)

That's cool. I may give it a shot. I had APE installed back when I had my eMac and it didn't give me any problems then, either. I just really like Transparent Dock.

For all those that are experiencing your network dropping every once in a while, check and see if your neighbor is on the same wireless channel as you. You can do this buy downloading iStumbler. If they are, simply change the channel to another one they aren't on (1,6 or 11 are the best). Even if you think it HAS to be the OS X update, check anyway ... you never know.

Yes, it's new the the System Profiler. My guess is that we'll see it first on the XServe. Since you can get 2.5" 10K SAS drives that work well in servers. Apple could have an XServe that contains more drives.
