Installed update this morning. By this evening my computer evolved sentience. It is holding my iTunes and iPhoto libraries hostage, and and is demanding "a piece of the action," whatever that is. Help!

I just tested a PPC version of halo in time demo and i noticed a 8.31fps boost. Not to signifigant but its progress.

EDIT: i just tried the UB version time demo and there was absoultly no improvement. Going to double check it with cinebench.

Anyone seen a similar cursor scenario

This is what happened to my cursor, prior to the machine freezing.
Anyone else with a similar problem, G4 Powerbook 1ghz 1gig ram 10.4.7 running prior to this

Didn't think Transparent Dock was Universal yet? I checked on it the other day and it said that it wasn't Universal.
My mistake... I'm using ClearDock...

I was answering that late last night, a couple of hours after my head stopped working... ;)

But: ClearDock works fine... :D

Ahh, that explains it. I think I'm gonna wait 'til Transparent Dock goes Universal.

Nothing wrong with ClearDock. That and its APE has never caused me any problems, and I've use it on a G3, a G4 and a MacTel over several iterations of Mac OS X... :)

Translation widget

Is it just me or is the translation widget performance actually worse after the update?

I've never used it before, but since I saw it in the list of improvements I thought I'd check it out. I added it to my dashboard under 10.4.7, set the From language to English, the To language to Dutch (why Dutch? Why not?), and started typing. It translated literally as I typed. I'd type a character or two and they'd start showing up in the bottom panel. Once it actually became a translatable word, it showed the real Dutch word (well, I assume it did. I don't actually speak Dutch). Then I upgraded to 10.4.8. Now, I type in a few words, then have to stop typing and wait for 2-3 seconds for the widget to catch up.

Seems like a great big step backwards to me. Good thing I don't actually use the thing. ;)

anyone tested rosetta on an Intelmac with this new update? are non universal apps any faster?

Adobe apps do appear to launch faster (never could be said to be speedy - even o a G5). Performance is a little harder to quantify here because with 4GB of memory and quad 3Ghz Xeons performance was not too shabby (in comparison to the G4 machine I was using previously).

Not again!

Well, Apple typically stops at 10.X.9 but it could happen. Im hoping they wont add more. Who knows, they might release Leopard in Jan or even Feb? So going too far beyond .9 might not be necessary. Im waiting for a Mac with Leopard on it so the sooner the better. :)

Please, not again. Why is it that this always comes up? The revision of Tiger has nothing to do with when Leopard is going to be released!! They could go to 10.4.1000 but if Leopard is not ready it won't ship. On the other had, Panther was the only Os X to go to .9 thus far!!!!

Well for me, currently(i havent updated yet) The translation widget is slow as hell. I type a word then i can wait a good minute before anything appears....but then again my iMac G5 has just been running really slowly these days so i reckon there might be another problem, lingering in the background.

I went to sleep with my new iMac updating this. a hefty 200 or so MB of downloading on a 512kbps connection. Woke up and the system had locked up. I reboot. It crashes on boot up. 3rd time it worked.

ps. the zoom feature is terrible with dual monitors of different resolutions. Absolutely unusable. Very nice with single monitors.

this happened on my ibook restart, but not my intel mac mini. It was easily switched off in the preferences section but odd nonetheless. I wondered if it was that I had a two button/scroll wheel external mouse attached. I haven't had either lockk up yet (fingers crossed).

At the very least, you could start downloading them now, then transfer them to the iMac when it arrives. :)

That might be a good idea! I could start tomorrow (I have a monthly dial-up allowance, right now about 1 hour left in September's).

What with The iTune update, PPC update, Intel Update, update for ArtlantisR expected this week (probably will be in the 150mb range) and updates for some other software I use, I'll probably have used up half my monthly allowance for October in the first few days.

Everyone I know around here is on dial-up as well, so no chance of getting someone else to do it.

I downloaded the combo update to a USB drive, using my work's 25Mb/s connection, so I don't spend a couple of hours downloading it at home.

It doesn't make any difference to you, I know, but I just wanted to boast.
Well, that really makes me feel a lot better! Can't find a crying smilie so...:(

WLAN bug in 10.4.8?

Hello,

sincle the update to 10.4.8 I have a little WLAN problem.

Sometimes I loose connection and the Airprt symbol in the menu bar
shows zero signal. When I click on the Airport symbol I am able to log in
again immediately.
This even happens when I am just 1 or 2 meters from the WLAN router, switching to another channel did not help.

The router is a rather old 802.11b (11 mbit) device, but it used to be very relieable.

Christian

Well I just installed the combo update my my 1st gen Intel iMac and it's fine. No blue tint to the screen, no problems with kernel panics. Thanks to those who recommended doing the combo versus the automatic software update!

Powerbook is updated. nothing wrong so far. I did notice my download speed was quicker when updating acrobat reader. usually when it updates it goes along, then slows down, and speeds up again, then slows down. Today, it didnt, it was a nice steady download. *shrug* if anything would of fixed that, im sure it would of been an update for my airport (not extreme) base stat.

either way, its sort of helped.

EDIT: Just a quick question. As I mention my AP BS, I just wondered if after a few years, its performance decreases? It would be 4yrs old now. Any FB would be nice =)

Niether my MacPro or my PPC G4 powerbook restarted twice?

My PowerBook G4 rebooted twice. All is good.

My Intel Mac Mini Duo showed me a screen that said "Please hold down the power button to restart your computer." something like that. was that a kernel panic? It was in several languages. I held the power button, it restarted, then did a double reboot. Very odd update, but it was the first time I updated the Intel Mini.

Well, it sounds like the kernel panic screen.

My MacPro rebooted twice, but my 17" Powerbook rebooted once (QUITE slowly).

Yup, same problem here with a 20" intel imac. Happens intermittently. Also, this morning I had to use the Setup Assistant to get on the ol' Internets. Anyone else experiencing these problems?

Just did the update on PB G4 : 22.3 MB (see signature). No problem so far. For information:
- feeling that the boot was longer than usual after an update
- 2 bars out of 5 for Airport, before it showed 3.
- system does not feel faster

The zoom crtl+scroll is nice, especially if you have a friend almost blind who needs it, which is my case, and he couldn't borrow my PB (he could use a laptop with windows and a third-party thing which zoomed).
- it is a little too blurry though
- And can somebody please confirm if this is totally new or if it existed in 10.4.7?

It seems like every time apple does a big round of updates like this (ilife/iwork/osx) something always comes out the following week. whether it be new software or updated hardware. Hmmmmm.....

As this update appears to add support for SAS (Serial Attached SCSI), I would postulate that the new intel-based XServe products (announced at the same time as the Mac Pro and to be available "real soon now") will be the new hardware that prompted the releaee of the update this time around.

There could be new Mac Books next Tuesday tucked in there too, but as we already know that other hardware is comming (and Apple may want to suck all the proffit they can out of their investment in the design of the current Mac Book/Mac Book Pro) I get the impression that we are not going to see new laptops until all the suckers...errr... eager customers... buy the current range in the run up to Christmass. Figure well will see new laptops in Feb then the release of Leopard in April (and not the other way around - Apple want to maximise sales of OS X upgrades after all).

Tankfully I can wait until May next year before I start having to think about gettiing myself a new laptop :D

compatibility with 3rd party USB hubs

Now, that caught my eye in the front page listing - fixing issues with 3rd party hubs. I have that "computer won't wake up after sleep due to Belkin hub" issue reported in the Apple Discussions as well.

Got exctited seeing that in the macrumors listing of features, but I don't see anything specific about that in the Apple description.

Has this helped anyone in that issue, who may have it?
