Wow, first time I've kernal panicked ever in a year of using Macs.

The update installed fine, it went to the desktop where I rebooted and it was working fine and all the sudden I saw the screen start swiping down (I originally thought it was my fake KP screensaver) and it wasn't.

Logged back in and Kernal Panicked at the login screen, lucklily none so far.

Odd.

CMD-Click does NOT open the FOLDER! Next.....

Do people here even try stuff before shooting their mouths off???

And THAT removes all of the OTHER options to view the folder in case you might want to view a folder in different ways for different purposes!

Not to mention it's just a clunky windows-like workaround solution.

MADDENING!

I just refuse to re-arrange the way I've organized my ENTIRE BUSINESS just because of an Apple GUI whim that has been lambasted by practically the entire Mac community since Day 1 of Leopard's release!

Ugggghhhhh!

Whoa, whoa, whoa...Talk about shooting off at the mouth?

Relax, we are not Apple, we are mac users offering suggestions to try to HELP YOU. I see what you're saying about the command-click is not what you are looking for (it was a friendly suggestion) but what is wrong with the Alias method mentioned by ebony?

Why would you lie to everyone repeatedly?

Clearly that is NOT true.

That opens the place WHERE the folder IS. Different.

And as for my thoughts not being representative of the Mac community, once again wrong.

The only reason Apple changed the dock since 10.5 is because of public outcry from people like me.
Otherwise, you wouldn't even have the options you have now.

If ever there was a constructive criticism that just screams, DUH, this is it!

Ok. I did CMD + click on the folder, it opened up in column view and I saw the folder's content.

What is it you want?

And please, why do you start calling people liar?

Tymmz is right. When your folder is set on column view (which I use as much as I can), cmd-click on a dock folder does indeed open the folder, not the parent folder.

Other views, however, just open the parent folder.

Since I prefer column view, I guess lucky me! I have an option to single click and open a folder!

Also, clicking and holding gives you a contextual menu where you can open the folder, regardless of view - yeah I know, but it is still, by definition, SINGLE-CLICK :p

Installed the update on my 17" MacBook Pro.

Update was 198MB in size, it downloaded and installed without a hitch.

I thought some people would want to know how it works with hacked Time-Machine setups?

Before I installed the update my Hacked Time Machine 'thing' was working fine I could bring files back, perform a manual backup and 'go back in time' with the GUI. After the update? .... Same thing. No problems whatsoever no extra configuration required. It was able to mount the Time Machine volume itself it then backed up 1GB or so of new files (I would gather the files that the Update changed). I was again able to access the normal Time Machine GUI, fly back through time and bring files back.

I dunno what some of you think about hacked time machines if its frowned upon or if you don't care but I thought I'd share that little tit-bit for anyone on the fence about updating after 10.5.2 broke the creation of Time Machine volumes from within the Time Machine preference pane and caused some strange behaviour when backing up. (With hacked setups only)

420 MB?! Are you frickin' serious?!

I barely have enough room for this, if the next update is this big, we're gonna have problems.:(

EDIT: On second thought, after reading all these complaints, I think I'm waiting a little while to update.

about 8KB/s right now and peak 23KB/s. normal speed is about 150KB/s (1.5Mb/s) before i go over the 12GB cap. pfft i saw someone complaining about 1.5Mb/s before… i have to pay $60 for that each month!

but soon i will be upgrading to 24Mb/s for AU$55 a month (with Adam who doesnt rely on Telstra) but still has a 20GB cap. the highest cap is 80GB for AU$110.

Wow.... I am sorry to hear about this.....

you need to free up some space Cas, OS X works best when theres at least 10% disk space free for swap and so it can defrag properly on the fly. buy an external or something or delete those watched videos.

And Apple *still* hasn't updated Flash to 9.0.124.0...

Apple normally includes the latest Flash Player in their OS X updates, but 10.5.3 still doesn't include Flash 9.0.124.0, which Adobe released in early April. This is really irresponsible of Apple, given that 20,000 or more web pages out there have reportedly been compromised to include code to redirect to sites exploiting one of the (many) vulnerabilities in 9.0.115.0:
http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1189
http://blogs.adobe.com/psirt/2008/05/potential_flash_player_issue_u_1.html

Granted, those exploits are probably Windows-only, but now that Macs use the same processor architecture as Windows boxes, Apple can't afford to just assume no one's going to go to the (relatively small) extra trouble to make variants of their Flash (and other cross-platform software) exploits for OS X.

Anyhow, OS X users who don't want to be vulnerable any longer will need to go to http://www.adobe.com/go/EN_US-H-GET-FLASH to install 9.0.124.0 using Adobe's installer.

EDIT:
Never mind, looks like Apple did finally put out Flash 9.0.124.0 in the 10.5.3 update -- they just didn't mention it in the About the Mac OS X 10.5.3 Update article for some reason. The About the security content of Security Update 2008-003 / Mac OS X 10.5.3 article, which I just ran across, does mention it.

Anyway, glad they finally took care of this.

It -is- snappier

I'm using my work iMac as a test mule for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. It's a first gen 20" Intel loaded down with 2 GB of ram and I have had -nothing- but trouble with it, to date. In all my years, and incidentally, those years date back to 1985 when I bought my first Macintosh, I've never had so many issues with an Apple operating system.

To Apple's credit, everything does happen faster on my Intel Core Duo iMac under 10.5.3.

• Mail hangs faster when I try to quit it. (strangely enough, even that's progress)

• I get exactly one .Mac sync in before I get a reliable failure message, informing me that I need to reset my preferences before I can sync again.

Am I the only person in the world still having show-stopping issues with Leopard?

I'm all about column view. Although I know I'd get frustrated if a way I was used to working was deactivated, but the anger is misdirected.

At any rate, I rely heavily on CS3 apps - anyone had any problems on that front with the update?

does suck… Australia has some of the worst internet in the world for our economy.

Ouch mate; I won't even complain about my download speeds anymore...

Annoying... after the update "Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes" was switched on.

Create a alias for the folder, put it in the dock * magic single click finder window

Hyperboy needs to calm down, but he's right about cmd-click -- it opens the folder containing the folder on the dock, not the folder itself.

I guess a fix would be to create a folder in the folder you want to open and place the newly -created folder in the dock. You could even give it the name of the parent. cmd-clicking that folder would open the parent folder.

Create an alias for the folder you want in the dock. Place the alias in the dock. it will single click to a finder window. Others have already posted this info.

Uh...now "Airport" is turned off and inactive, and once I set it to active and try to turn it on, it becomes inactive again. WTF, :apple:?

Applied combo update instead of going through software update this time. Now it seems to be working. Let's see for how long.

EDIT: On second thought, after reading all these complaints, I think I'm waiting a little while to update.

You only need that space long enough to do the install. My free drive space actually increased a little bit after the install was completely finished. Maybe you can download the delta update to an external hard drive if you don't have enough space.

D/L this update at 420 MB. Not sure why so large as I keep my iMac up to date, but no biggie!

It took me about 20 min with 3 Mbs dsl to D/L and another 5 - 8 min approximately to install. 2 reboots and poof all is fine.

This was on a first generation intel iMac. I just Love this iMac. Every time I have ran anything Apple has updated I have not had one problem! That's been near 3 years now! --))) Do that with windoz!

WTG Apple! ;):D;) :apple::apple::apple:

PS Will do my Macbook tomorrow!
