BTW, I have a wireless Time Machine set-up using an AEBS and USB hard drive.

It works fine after the update, but the first back-up took a looooong time preparing.

I think the thing HyperBoy is talking about is to be able to single (left-click) the icon in the Dock to OPEN the Dock's folder in the Finder to see it's contents, however, he wants to be able to still right-click it to see the contents at a glance via the popup menu. I would actually like the same thing too. Often times I wanna delete files that are in my Downloads folder but, I can't do it from the Dock, so I have to right-click then click on Open "Downloads" to open it. Two clicks instead of 1. I usually just click, hold cmd, then click on the file I want to delete and it opens in the Finder with that file selected, and then I hit cmd-delete. Meh.

I do agree that he needs to calm down though... it's such a minor thing to freak out about. (However, I do have my days where I just can't take the little annoyances and I freak out too... hehe)

:confused::confused:

My address book version is 4.1.1 (695)

You really shouldn't be doing things while installing the updates.

I have always been able to reapply updates using the combo update

Looks like I'm in trouble. My address book version is 4.1! Is this update the same thing as 199MB update I got from software update? I also made software update save a copy of the update just in case. And that won't let me update. Are the combo updates for those who want to reapply an update?

If this thing I'm downloading now (the combo) doesn't allow me to reinstall, do I have to recover from my Leopard Disc?

Why is Flash Apple's problem? I'd actually rather update it myself, being a developer. What if I need the previous version for something and Apple shoved the latest at me?

Just saying, something like Flash I can understand why they wouldn't update it.

-Kevin

It's Apple's problem because they've made it their problem. They realize that it's a key piece of software without which a large portion of websites won't work properly, so they distribute it with the OS, and put out security updates for it when they update OS X. Microsoft does the same thing for Windows, except that they stick with an ancient version of Flash that doesn't work on many sites and only put out backported security updates for it for the most severe and widely exploited vulnerabilities. Given that Flash has traditionally been rife with security holes, and the fact that it has no auto-updater of its own, I highly prefer Apple's approach.

In any case, it turns out I was incorrect that the 10.5.3 update doesn't include the new version of Flash. From my edited post:

EDIT:
Never mind, looks like Apple did finally put out Flash 9.0.124.0 in the 10.5.3 update -- they just didn't mention it in the About the Mac OS X 10.5.3 Update article for some reason. The About the security content of Security Update 2008-003 / Mac OS X 10.5.3 article, which I just ran across, does mention it.

Anyway, glad they finally took care of this.

Wireless issues are still here, possibly worse

6 months so far without a fix. It's a great feeling knowing cheap windows laptops and iphone's work fine but a $1,300 Macbook doesn't.

Yes I tested it and it works!!! I am so happy about this!
And I'm still way too paranoid. I can't believe it took this long for Apple to address this. How do you know it's behaving itself?

Can you use TimeMachine to go back through changes in your Aperture library?

So far, everything seems to be in order with new update for me. My internet seems to be faster and my restarts with apps loading is alot better. Looks like Apple got it good with this update:D

Soon things will get slower again. ;)

Hmm, like I said in my other post. I never had any problems with my macbook, so I am not sure why I would want this? , but then again I do not have a lot of junk on my macbook. All I ever loaded freely was Audacity and CHMOX -all my other apps were bought from either the apple store (locally), macmall, or Quickverse (considering an app from mariner now).

I think I will wait until most people way in on the good, the bad, and the ugly. too much of this post has been "yay its out" to get a real feel if I should install it or not. - I am a mac newbie for about a month and I always get scared when a Windows update comes out and gets loaded without my knowledge (It tends to screw up something every time).

I think all I would want on my mac is a little more speed - although I have not slowed down that much.

off subject:

As a recent convert from the PC windows world, I remember having to do the following to keep my machine happy -How does one do these on a mac?

1. Delete temporary internet files.
2. Disk cleanup and compress old files.
3. Disk defrag
4. Clean out application cache and backup files (that are stored in temporary folders).

I have been working with a lot of large files (including video), and also un-installing windows apps from Parallels to install the Mac versions (if available or I find an alternative) to run natively.

Because of these large files and my internet use; I do not want my mac to, well umm, turn into a dog like my dell . Is any of the above even necessary on a mac (I already figured out how to compress down the parallels virtual disk....;)

Preliminary testing says ProApps performance is up!

Barefeats test (with better system than mine in parenthesis):
Atom Strand: 14.93 (16.4)
Dotted Axis: 17.89 (30.4) !
Directions: 19.68 (21.2)
Blocks detail: 58.92 (could not fit everything in RAM, rendered 9 seconds only)
Brush Open: 25.26 [PAL], 23.99 [NTSC] (25.2)
Light Open: 39.49 (46.5)
Satin Blue Background: 31.76 (34.4)
Sketch Open: 24.5 (23.2)

Notes: Testing was very unscientific. Specs are Mac Pro 2.66 Mac OS X (10.5.3) 4 GB Ram, 8800GT, 6.66 TB + 150GB 10K RPM Raptor vs BF's "Early 2008" 16GB RAM machine. And also BF does not mention if they are using NTSC or PAL templates. Still results seem to have improved in most cases. Obviously this should have been tested against my own machine running 10.5.2, but I didn't have time to run those tests. Suffice to say it "feels" faster.

I have been on the phone with Apple engineering and they are constantly working on new drivers and are very aware of the problems. Obviously he couldn't give me any details, but he said that because the 8800 is a newer card they had to write their drivers for stability first, optimisation second. That's the part they are working on now. He also said there would be improvement "soonish". I'm guessing the 10.5.3 update was what he was talking about. If you want to help them directly, sign up for a student ADC account and file your bugs and test cases at http://bugreporter.apple.com. Apple is listening and is working on it.

Thank-you!

For those who tried to edit the iPod plist to enable Google Sync support, it does let you enter your Google account information. To get the syncing to work though, you need to enable contact syncs on your iPod. To do this, just plug in your iPod (it should launch iTunes and switch to the iPod screen). Then click the Contacts tab and enable contact syncing.

After doing this and forcing an iPod sync, a window popped up prompting me to resolve conflicts between Google Contacts and Address Book.

ok don't know if this means anything
i ran geekbench before the update i got this

after update i got this
picture1lf0.jpg

so minor upgrade =)
so far so good on this upgrade

AppleHWSensor.kext looks like it was updated it looks like and seems to have been fixed.

No more ~10 minute delay in G4 startups that have Geforce 6200 cards! :)

Plus it is way faster on the G4 too, =)

You have a Dell? :D

Don't even get me started on Dell, I know that smile of yours is actually a laugh. I worked for one company, every Dell desktop's pwersupply died and the front USB's stopped working. My Dell for my new job (I work from home. telecommuting - nice with the way gas priceses are heading) blew the power supply, motherboard, and hard drive [all separately in one week]; and the thing was only 4 months old.

My friend just aquired a used Dell laptop from a college student. the student threw it way because it was one year old and the LCD blew on it - he did not want to fix it. Since my friend has limited income and needed a computer for his church ministry he took it and asked if I could fix it. I spent 2 days on the phone and was transferred between 20 (no joke) different people [all within 3 depts] to try to get an LCD display and the original disks for the machine.

Boy, do I like Apple much better :p

I now have a (2) next to my computer name..

for example *Computer Name*(2) on the login screen..or if I go to About This mac>> Mor Info.. it also shows *Computer Name*(2)

anyone else?

Happened to me too. Rename it in the Sharing prefs pane.

How come this isn't showing up when i run software update, it says my system is up to date.

im having the same problem, i tried downloading it, but it gives me the following error:

I actually never had a problem with Dell products and their support. You just need to speak their language, and I don't mean Pashtu ;)

Am I the only one that feels like everything is SLOWER? I synced my iPhone and it took forever, Safari took over a minute just to start up and even typing feels slower. This is all on my iMac.

After the update the system may be doing some Spotlight and Time Machine indexing. Give it some tome to settle in.

about 8KB/s right now and peak 23KB/s. normal speed is about 150KB/s (1.5Mb/s) before i go over the 12GB cap. pfft i saw someone complaining about 1.5Mb/s before… i have to pay $60 for that each month!
but soon i will be upgrading to 24Mb/s for AU$55 a month (with Adam who doesnt rely on Telstra) but still has a 20GB cap. the highest cap is 80GB for AU$110.
does suck… Australia has some of the worst internet in the world for our economy.

It's 4 am in Slovenia now and... these are my speeds :-D

Each of us in the dorm have this bandwidth (it's not shared bandwidth). P2P flies! :-D
With T-2.net you get 20Mbps symmetrical FTTH for 28 euros a month at home :-D
I have to say... things are moving a little faster here lately than in other countries :p

Will suffer a little though when I move back to Spain. 20/1 Mbps connections will seem slow compared to the connection I have now :-S

10.5.3 has shown up as 198mb for me.

Now if this would just fix the damn screen saver bug I've had for forever, that'd be awesome!! Does anyone else have this problem? I'll wake my computer up, and go to enter my password (correctly obviously), hit enter, and then it blinks and goes right back to the authentication screen? Afterwards, I enter my pw again but now my screen saver will not activate, I have to restart to fix it. Totally not a big deal, but just one of those annoying bugs.

Have you tried an Archive and Install? I had a problem where the Finder wouldn't quit when I tried to do a restart. I always had to force it off with the power button. An Archive and Install cleared that up. I don't know if there was a mangled file someplace or a bad pref setting. The disk tested OK.

After over an hour on the phone today, I finally got a guy who could help me. I think the problem is there support is spread out too much. Part of my problem I got was "oh, your calling from the US, well you got transferred to Canadian support." I never had this many problems with apple support (on my questions), HP support, and IBM Support [before they sold to lenovo].

heck, I could have wrote this article as I have had about the same experience::mad:

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/US/05/27/dell.lawsuit/?imw=Y&iref=mpstoryemail

They even upped the interest rate on my "preferred" account to 30%, after I paid off one laptop well within the promotion period. And I was never late on a payment with them and sent in more than the minimum due. Plus I had bought lots of software through them. that is not what I call a preferred customer.....

Atleast when I talk to the guys at the local apple store, they treat me with respect and my time seems valuable to them. ;)
