I'm happy to report I'm back up in running. There was some strange permssion/ACL problem when migrating my user account from Time Machine.

I lost way to much sleep fixing my Mac. Apple really needs to work on a System Restore like feature for the operating system. Rolling back via Time Machine is just ridiculous.

My Mac Pro 2006 does the same thing with 10.5.2, so I don't think it's anything new. I think it's new since the last Airport Utility update.

Yep, same here:

Code:
$ launchctl list

While reading this thread, I drank 280 cl of coffee. It took 5.5 minutes :D

OS X is the most user friendly OS IMO, but abnormally complex under the hood given its roots. When tweaking something with a hack (because of the aforementioned complexity), I log an untweak procedure to follow before updates. In writing, it reminds me to do important things like backing up files, etc.

Linux is simpler under the hood, which makes tweaking a breeze, but you're semi on your own. There are plenty of resources but its up to you to dig them up.

Windows...don't get me started. AFAIK its the root cause of the current economic crisis :D

Budding developers in many European and Asian Universities, etc. are more likely to develop the new "killer apps" that take advantage of fast broadband. Its the price you pay for "too much" laissez-faire IMO.

Oh I imagine OS X is complex under the hood. the Unix/Linux kernals are fragmented (what I mean is, while the root kernal is the same - Unix;Linux distributions differ a lot in how they are assembles ontop of the root kernal). So you take a Unix/Linux kernal (in this case OS Xis free BSD), and then apply the best, friendliest desktop on top of the root - i image there is a lot of code behind it to make it all work. Linux may not be a complex, but it is true Linux apps are slower comeing. I think one of the things that make linux apps slower coming is the fact of the distributions being so fragments and a number of linux companies were here today, gone tomorrow (or they just pretty much dropped out of the main stream - slackware, caldera, mandrake, red hat, Suse [who is now Novell], Lindows, etc).

What I meant by America develops it, but is slow to implement... it was that the internet was started by the US military in needs to share information quickly, then it got released (for lack of a better term) to the civilian population. Also America developed networking and wireless technology. I read many articles where wireless (and even hard wired) internet runs at killer speeds in developed countries outside of the US. Here in America, we have been slow to implement wireless technology (they blame it on cost as to why most cities do not have WiMax). Also the cost to get any bandwith is expensive, so yes if it were faster and cheaper I would have had a server in my home and would have offered more on my now closed down website.

America invents a lot of things, but then we outsource it to other countries and with the cheaper cost of living and cheaper to produce the item in those countries - they tend to take more advantage of it. Also, since most everything in America is developed my american companies, but then made overseas - we pay a hefty price to import it back in.

I think the other issue with why wireless is not as good as other countries is the fact that in other countries, you have a lot of people crowded into cities. Here in the US, we like to spread out, so try to implement a wireless in an area where houses can be 100's of feet to miles apart. Even though my area is built up (and still growing), they still consider us to rural to put in city water, sewer, cable tv, trash pick up. My internet is DSL and I pay (eh hem, my work pays $45/month for 1.5mps residental. For the same speed, but if your a business you will pay $65-$80/month - same wires, same risk of downtime as residential, no gurantee it will get you up quicker.

I did cmd click on a folder in my dock and...ka bing... up pops a finder window of the folder! Yes, this is with Leopard. 10.5.2.

I wasn't going to post again on this topic, but I'm amazed at what great lengths people are going to dispute what I'm saying, up to and including outright lies for the silly purpose of childlike public ridicule. This must be the 8th person or more in this thread who keeps spreading this ridiculous falsehood. How is it that 8 people can try something that is impossible and BINGO, all 8 report back that they can do something that is IMPOSSIBLE in ANY version of Leopard?!?

Unbelievable.

NO, YOU ARE WRONG. THAT DOES NOT WORK. NOPE. NADA. NEXT...

Cmd-clicking a folder in the dock just shows you the LOCATION of the folder, it does NOT open it! In Tiger, you can single click a dock folder that you drag there and BINGO, it opens. This simple function was removed in Leopard and should be restored. It makes absolutely no sense to have to right-click a folder, then left-click "Open" that folder! Sure, there are plenty of Dock viewing options in 10.5.3, but simply single-clicking and opening the darn folder is NOT one of them!

This is definitely my last post on this here.
See you all in the Apple Discussions forums or on the alien mothership. :)

^ dude chill out… not every OS is perfect and suited to your needs/wants.

try this for the downloads stack

- open Finder and go to your home folder (should do this by default)
- click the third view button in Finder's toolbar to view in column view
- press cmd+J to open Show View Options
- click "Always open in column view"

Screencapture 1.jpg

- then cmd click on the downloads stack

EDIT: ok i see you wrote above that was your last post on MacRumors but i hope this works for you.

I have no horse in this race (whatever you guys are competing about) but I can command click on a folder on my dock and it opens the folder in finder.

What exactly are you trying to say or do with this?

Sorry if this has been mentioned, but Pages documents (and I guess keynote, but I have not tried), now are different in QL; some don't work, but for multi-page documents, they are shown like this:

No it does NOT! It shows you the LOCATION of the folder.

Not the same thing.

The best workaround appears to be click and hold, so thanks to whoever suggest that. :)

A basic summary of the first 36 pages...

Well, I officially have no life. I actually read the entire thread! Over the course of two days mind you, but still, you'd have to be pretty bored to read 900-some forums posts on an OS update.

A summary for those who want to catch up, but simply don't have the time:

- There are different sizes for the updates. We cannot find a method to it.
- The Combo Update will update you from any version of 10.5 to 10.5.3.
- The update fixed things. (Imagine that.)
- However, some people did have problems with the update.
- There appears to be a new feature in Address Book to allow you to sync
your Google contacts. You need an iPhone to do it though, unless you want
to edit some iPod preference file.
- It has been brought to our attention that there is no way to single-click on
a folder in the Dock and have it open the folder. Despite many alternate
solutions, this inability is particularly troubling to some.
- Some people compared various problems with Mac OS X to Windows,
Windoze, or Winblows. Others took offense to this.
- In general, a good time was had by all most.

As for my update experience, Completely flawless update to an already seemingly flawless system. I installed Leopard the day it came out and never had a problem. It seems that after the first couple restarts, startup/shutdown is a touch faster. However, I'm afraid that I shall have to wait yet another release for the fabled "Safari Feels Snappier." :p

Right click and choose Open. Otherwise report it as a bug to Apple...

In my case, when I command+click a folder in my dock, the Finder window that opens is that of the parent folder of the folder that I have in the dock. So, for example if I had a folder called iPod in a folder called Music, if I placed the iPod folder in the dock and commanded+click'd it then I would be opening the Music folder, with the iPod folder highlighted - just as the angry fellow above has stated, this does not open the folder in the dock but merely shows it's location in the Finder, or effectively "reveals in finder" if you like.

Not sure why this is getting so heated though.

thats becuase you have to manually set all the parent directories of the stack folder to always open in column view.

I will attempt this workaround, but seriously, this is a ridiculously arcane solution for something that was just...

ONE CLICK IN TIGER!

And column view was not the view I was looking for either.

Upgrade went semi-smooth on a 1.83GHz CD mini (420MB package).

First restart hung at the blue screen with spinning cog....the cog froze after a minute or so, I let it sit for 10 minutes, then held in the power switch to shut down. Upon power up, it got to a certain point in the bootup (gray screen?), then restarted itself. After that restart, everything (so far) is fine....but I haven't played with much...Safari , Entourage, Spaces seem to work fine....I'll check out more over the weekend.

For completeness:

-Safari seems snappier

-I don't have any Google contacts or an iphone, so don't care if I can now sync them or not

-Hyper - I'm with ya...I'd like to see a single click open the finder window (NOT in column view - I HATE column view)...BTW all you Cmd-Click responders...I wanna be able to open the folder with one finger....not two

thats cool, kind of like the Keynote file quick look view that Steve demoed at WWDC07 that didnt appear in the GM build.

does pressing the down arrow key go to page 2 or do you have to click? i havent updated yet.

I totally agree on the folder clicking issue. Very annoying that you can't open a dock folder with one click

And also why doesn't the finder remember what view I have set for each folder...

I believe the Automatic View setting over-rides the USER based on the # of items in the folder, because so far I've only been able to successfully single-click and open EMPTY FOLDERS!

This might explain all the seemingly crazy posts of people being able to do something which is otherwise impossible! LOL

As a final thought, if I have to get a headache just to open a folder that I've had on my computer for 5 years with a single click, Apple needs to fix this ASAP!

If you just want to open the folder place an alias on the dock

My Problems

I have a imac 24" with 4 gig of RAM. I downloaded the update and now I don't have bluetooth or access to my external drive where my back ups are located. The bluetooth icon in the upper right hand corner simply says it is unavailable and the drive is grayed out.

I am a recent convert to mac so I don't know how to fix. Can anyone help or is it recommended that I call Apple directly for support?

Thanks in advance.

If you just want to open the folder place an alias on the dock

Yes, that is probably the most full-proof solution, but it does remove all of the other view options in case you might want to look at the info in a folder in multiple ways in the future, but yes, it does work.

You just have to create a new folder of all your folder aliases and then drag them individually to the Dock! LOL

Too funny.

Most likely, I'll use a mix of these suggestions depending on how much info is in the folder, and yes I do use Grid to view some folders from my dock as well, so I'm not completely slamming Apple for the dock. It's just this 1 simple thing that's missing that is like a no-brainer.

So seriously though Apple, please just add "View Content as a Folder" in 10.5.4!

Thanks! :)
