hang problem resolved

I had the issue with hanging at the "configuring installation" step. sat there for 2 hours, so i powered-down manually.

looked at the downloaded file, and it ws only around 40MB. deleted it, went back to update, and watched it download thw whole 190MB. update installed without hanging.

yeah the reboot took a while, for a minute I was glad I had just cloned to the external hdd.

The 10.5.6 update has made the trackpad on my white 2.1-C2D macbook WAY WAY more accurate. It used to be jittery and awful. I was going to take it in for service.

What update did you use for your MB was it the Combo or normal because with my internet its gonna take ages to download the combo?

I just successfully installed Mac OS X 10.5.6 on my MacBook Pro (Late 2008) using the Combo Updater from Apple's website and it didn't cause any issues whatsoever; the operation of the computer seems to be more fluid overall.

Better install advice?

Why is it better to install these mayor updates running safe mode?

and...

Why is it better to do so using the combo updates (even if as in this case I'm running 10.5.5)? would that duplicate the files, or would it overwrite them and remove the last "individual" updates installed before?

thanks for your thoughts!

Yeah, I'd quite like to know this as well

FYI for users of ATT 3G USB dongles. I have a Sierra Wireless USB Connect Mercury.

After the 10.5.6. update, I could not connect to ATT's 3G or EDGE networks. The watcher software just kept on saying "searching". Waiting for 5 min with no luck plus a restart, I had the mind to do a PRAM reset just for the heck of it.

After doing this, the dongle connected fine, as evidenced by my posting now.

Good luck.

Has anybody else found that multi-touch in Finder no longer works?

Pinching in any location where icons are present (desktop, icon view in Finder) works just like the user would expect. A pinch makes the icons smaller, and a reverse pinch makes the icons bigger. This only works with Finder as the active application.

Worked in 10.5.5 but works no more... :(

updated

anyone else get 4 SUID Warnings after repairing permissions in Disk Utility now? I know yesterday there did not show up.

Odd....

...I had certain entries in my Address Book dupe about 40-45 times...my contacts grew from 400 to 38,000.

No issues here ...

I upgraded two systems using software update:

MacPro / Early 2008 : No issues.
MacBook Pro, Early 2008: No issues.

Thanks Apple!

does this fix, fix the mini display port issues to dvi? everytime my monitor sleeps, it doesnt wake up. also i have some issues when my computer goes to sleep and i try to wake it and it wont wake up.

This is the first update that didn't work for me. It hang during "Configuring your installation" after hitting restart when downloading is complete.

How long before you force-restarted?

A lot of people think the "spinning wheel of death" is a bad sign. It just happens when an application is too busy to respond to user input. Doesn't always mean the app has hung or frozen.

With such a significant update to your computer's software, I hope you waited a while at least.

Still DVI Audio issues

The two previous firmwares did not fix the DVI audio out issue on my unibody MBP2008 . I was hoping this update would address that.

My problem:

Using an external 1/4" audio cable coming out of the audio port (headphones) and using an external monitor thru the mini Display port, and plugging the audio cable to a multi-track audio mixer makes a nonstop whine. At first I thought it was just an interference of some sort in my audio setup but then discovered that other people have the same issues.

I suppose those who work with Garageband and other types of audio/video editing and using pro equipment may see this problem. I didn't have this issue with my previous MBP (DVI out).

About the new update..

it says it improves graphics performance. This only holds true during mac osx right? not while running windows.:D

The biggest thing I noticed is that HIDE for your startup items when mounting a NAS now really hides the window. It doesn't pop up anymore.

Just a little something that has bugged me for a bit. I guess I am easily pleased.

I am also noticing jumbled up text/lines in Safari when scrolling using the wheel on my mouse. I had to scroll down and then up again just to see the Submit Reply button when posting this. Never did that before.

combo vs single

I also got hungup 'installing' the update from software updater and downloaded the single updater from apple.com. any reason i should have updated using 'combo' if i already had 10.5.5 installed?

Thanks!

Whoa, I never knew you could do that, since my MacBook's too old. I'm guessing if they removed it, they did it cuz people were doing it by accident, and it seems like it could be more confusing than helpful. How often do you want to resize your icons?
I'm one of those people that occasionally trigged it by accident. It was mildly annoying, so I'm glad it has been removed.

I'm really pleased they added this; it was really useful in Boot Camp.
