I believe they take back the stock and use them for customer and warranty replacements that you get from the Apple Store.

I *hope* they bring out a 250g flash version of the Touch.

But who knows.

To the one that asked, stores sell out of what they have. Sometime the Target stores will do promo gift cards to help them sell out of them. Although I think my local Target still has a 1st gen iPad.
Ah geez... was this the version that's geared towards a media player? If so, I already have an Ipod Classic for that. For the IpT6, I'd like a 4.7" or 5.5" screen, and internals to enable it to keep up with the joneses.

if they keep to their usual cycle, the a5 processor won't get ios9 - the a4 didn't get ios8 so it's the a5 next. but there's a glimmer of hope, as ios9 is said to be more of a performance update (think osx snow leopard)

The classic iPods were fabulous devices but even the newest are getting a little old and the drives are no longer replaceable new AFAIK. I mega-capacity Touch would be a great replacement, but I doubt we'll see it. :(

Replacing an iPod Classic hard drive? Last I hear, yes, they are 'no longer'. Part of the reason, according to rumours, that Apple killed the 'Classic' is because of the unavailability of the drives. Why they didn't just swap the drive for flash and call it the 'Classic ][' is beyond me, but I would wager it's because it doesn't have 'apps'. Although I do remember their attempt to have people develop 'apps' for the click wheel interface. Not thinking that ended well.

Still, a killer 'fat Touch' would be a HUGE seller for that niche market of people that have to carry their entire music collection when they travel, and I'm not making fun of that. I still have my Classic, and it has *most* of my collection, including a few 'books on tape'. You never know when the mood will strike you. STP has gotten me through quite a few frustrating flying experiences.

But how big is too big? 256g? 512g?

Me thinks it's time to go onto Ebay and buy another Ipod Classic as a backup :(

Towards its end, they had a deal where you could buy all of the games for it for $50 or something (an overall savings of just over $5). I tried some of them at an Apple store. They weren't half bad.

I am guessing that they will simply leave the touch as-is and discontinue it eventually due to old hardware. There is also the possibility they will leave it till September and update it then. I can also see the iPod line shrinking down to 1-2 models or being discontinued entirely. I don't think we will see the word iPod mentioned at this event though.

Agreed. I think Apple will quietly phase out the iPod touch lineup.

Totally agree. I'd buy a 128 or 256 gb flash-based Classic, definitely.

It just means that the Apple store will no longer sell them. Non-Apple stores sell the discontinued items until there are no more available :D.
That's not always the case. When Apple discontinued the iPod Classic, they immediately pulled existing units from retail outlets the day that the announcement was made.

There were some who were fortunate enough to hit up stores that were a little slow in responding.

 How does this work... retail stores like Best Buy gets a "decree" from Apple to remove their stock of the Ipod Classics, and they either comply, or perhaps face penalties if caught?

Touch to Apple watch

For those of us that don't have an iPhone.

Boy with this be a big surprise!

I was thinking It would be nice if they made a device with like 256gb of storage, wifi, Bluetooth, and the click wheel. It would look like the classic just have features that would bring it up to date. It would also be rugged enough to take some abuse. Or some kind of Interface that works as good as the click wheel. Also enough battery to last at least 10 hours while playing over Bluetooth with the screen on. The things that hold the classic back for me is the fragile hard drive and lack of Bluetooth, which basically means I can't use any of my fancy awesome speakers with it which makes it completely pointless to own. Connecting through a wire is so 90's. I'd buy it.

Apple *buys them back*.

Plus 'buyback' clauses are found in just about every vendor agreement. We had to sign one from HP. If they really really really want it back, they will exercise their contract provision and *require* you to return it to them, for either a *credit*, or an outright refund of the cost of the unit(s) being recalled.

I'd imagine that Apple wanted them for spares, and possibly gifts/donations.

Although I swear that the local Target still had one after the Classic was dropped. I thought of picking it up, but it was a silver...

I was hooked on their Solitaire and mine sweeper games after my iPhone died in a long transcon flight. It was hard to win their Solitaire...

In my local department store today: all iPods (all ranges) pulled from the shelves.

Stock returned to Apple. Not expecting any replacements.

5 bucks says the word 'iPod' isn't mentioned ONCE.

I see your $5 and raise you $10 on that bet. There's zero reason for them to dilute an Apple Watch event with an iPod release. No matter how much I want the rumors to be true with the Retina Macbook Air, it's not going to happen, it just makes zero sense from a marketing perspective.

Apple Watch March 2015 at Media Event

Macbook Air (maybe Retina) at June 2015 WWDC

iPhone\iPad\iOS at September 2015 Media event

Apple has become utterly predictable lately with these releases... people always speculate their wild fantasies about what's coming\likely, and every time we're let down. This is the new Apple under Tim Cook.... it's run more and more like HP\Dell\Samsung every day. LOL

This either confirms there's new iPods or confirms the iPod line-up is dead
At this point I think it is a 50/50 possibility. Especially Apple could push the aWatch as a replacement for the Nano and Shuffle.

They might position the aWatch as a perfect companion to newly designed iPods (allowing control of the iPod from the watch)

Headline: Apple discontinues the Nano, Shuffle, and Ipod Touch all in one fell swoop, impossible, sales can't be that bad.
"bad" is a relative term. If I recall correctly, iPods (all of them) don't appear as a separate line item in the company's annual report.

iPod sales are a chicken and egg scenario. Are iPod sales down because Apple hasn't placed an emphasis on them nor directed the public's attention to them (advertising, new devices, etc.) in recent years or is it because dedicated players have fallen out of favor?

I lean toward the former.

As a consumer, I cannot purchase something that is not for sale.

You are correct. They are now grouped together with the Apple watch and Apple TV. Another reason why an iPod announcement might be at this event ?

Actually, I agree re the attractiveness of such a product for that particular niche market who wish to carry all of their music collection in one nice, neat, portable, musical device.

As for a SSD drive of 256 GB, or 512 GB…..how much is too much? Well, I'd certainly be interested in an iPod Touch with a SSD drive of 256 GB; I could even see myself being sufficiently stupidly attracted to shelling out my credit card to obtain an iPod Touch with a SSD of 512 GB...

Agreed. I think Apple will quietly phase out the iPod touch lineup.

Unfortunately, I think you may well be all too right.

As would I.

Ah. Not quite the news I was hoping to hear, but closer to the sorry news I feared might be confirmed. Interesting post, and food for thought.

This either confirms there's new iPods or confirms the iPod line-up is dead

Yes, I rather think that it does.

Many of these devices sound too good, so of course Apple won't do them.

As someone who's used 6 different Palm OS devices back in the last decade, that's one thing myself and the Palm OS community noticed is they were never incentivized to create the ultimate device, even if it meant charging top dollar for it. While one device may have had more features than another, it was never a full upgrade. There were always some parts that were a missing or downgraded. All in all, a "sidegrade" if you will.

We've seen the same with the Apple lineup... Ipod has the sheer capacity, Iph has the sheer power and connectivity, IpT has a mix of the 2 along with not having to purchase a contract. I doubt we'll see a device that combines all of these into one unit.

Weren't iPods updated around September? Also, WWDC is in June and there we'll hear final word on supported devices.

So my guess is iPods won't be even mentioned on Monday.

Are you a customer of this store or a worker and why can't you name the department store?

iPods were not updated last September.

WWDC in June is too late for a discontinuation of the Touch 5 if the Touch 5 will not run IOS 9. If I'm wrong and Apple doesn't discontinue the Touch 5 at the media event, I'm pretty sure then that the Touch 5 will run IOS 9.
