I'm on the 13 Pro Max... we'll see what the 16 brings. Mine seems to be working fine and the battery is at 83%. I would assume battery issues might occur on the wait for a 17. I'll probably upgrade to the 16, but who knows.

I thought Wi-Fi 7 was expected in iPhone 16 upcoming in September? Has this now been delayed to the iPhone 17??

Related / speculation: now that Apple will soon be producing its own Wi-Fi chips, does anyone think they might re-enter the router market (Wi-Fi 7 AirPort Extreme?)?

"Under-Display Face ID"

I believe this as much as I believe the old rumors (and there were SO MANY of them) about under-display touch-ID.

Sure Jan.

That said, my 13pro was replaced by apple care just before the current phones were released and its still showing 100% battery capacity. I have upgraded every other year, like clockwork, but decided to skip the 15. If this battery holds out, I may skip the 16 too.

Yea, I’m still rocking my iPhone 11. Haven’t seen a single reason to upgrade yet. Wake me up if things get better than a speed bump! There has been nothing useful on these phones for years. I’ll upgrade when they figure out how to stop the junk calls! Yes I do use the silence unknown callers but it’s far from enough.

I am on the iphone 12 pro and going to run this to the ground to see how long it will last. My dad had the iphone 6 plus..till oct of last year! still worked.Got him the iphone 11 pro max and is happy with it. Hoping like the ipad they make a slim'ish iphone one year.

Definitely keep waiting. Just buy a 2 year old great condition top of the line iPhone (13 would be the model to get) for half the price of their flagship models. Then you can see when the 17 comes out, if Apple didn't make it extra special you can keep waiting for the next one after that. Most models are just spec bumps and nothing special. Give apple money when they actually do something meaningful with their devices and buy used the rest of the time. I recently purchased a 13 pro max with bigger drive for half the price when new. Now even if I had to replace it in a year it wont sting like being forced to keep a $1,000 phone for years just to make the purchase worth getting.

iPhone 14 Pro Max is almost perfect for me... There were camera hardware changes but they re-used Smart HDR 4 from the iPhone 13 series instead of Smart HDR 5 which the iPhone 15 series got...

Apple should have switched to USB Type C back in 2020 and used USB 3.x speed on Pro and USB 2.0 on non-Pro...

As long as my 13 Pro Max lasts longer than a day on its battery, that’s the only reason I need to “wait” for the iPhone 18 or 19 or whatever.

As someone with a 13 Pro Max, wasn't enticed with 14 or 15 and this convinced me to wait for 17. I'll just treat myself to a new battery some point later this year since I'm at 84% battery health.

Same, except not Max. I'm going to see if I can hold out until they get rid of the screen cutout entirely. It's gotten worse every year since the 13 Pro. It just keeps going further and further down into the display.

1. Under-Display Face ID

Major Major doubt on this one... At the snails pace that Apple innovates they will milk the physical DI for at least 5 more iterations before they get rid of it. And even then it will still live on in software form.

But but the analysts say the iPhone 16 will be a supercycle of ai powered upgrades.

Seriously how can you even think of passing up on the all new AI iPhone 16 powered by AI, blessed by AI, etc. It will make you more smart. Your pay will increase and your stock price will skyrocket as you do things never dreamed of before.

It will sum up web pages for you. Why browse the web when you can AI auto summarize it.

17 Pro and Pro Max rumored to have 12GB RAM.... um, would they still make 8GB RAM on entry level Macs? LOL
I was going to upgrade my MacBook soon, but maybe I should wait for M4. If the iPhone 17 Pro Max will have more than 8gb of ram, they will undoubtedly increase the base ram of the MacBook Pro before that, right?

Maybe I'll just upgrade during the back to school sale and not take a chance.

2. New Display Sizes
iPhone 17 & iPhone 17 Plus
This year's iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are rumored to be getting bigger display sizes, going from 6.12- and 6.69-inches to 6.27- and 6.86-inches, respectively. For 2025, Apple is also expected to bring the larger 6.27-inch display size to its standard ‌iPhone‌ model, while the equivalent "iPhone 17 Plus" model could adopt completely new display dimensions.
I hope this isn't true. I don't view an even bigger smallest iPhone as a good thing. I can tolerate 6.1" and I felt like the mini was too small and compromised. I still think around 5.8" is the sweet spot for balancing screen real estate with a compact form factor and ability to use the phone one handed.

It all depends on AI features for me. My 13 Pro still has 95% max battery. If iOS 18/iPhone 16 Pro AI features are meh compared to OpenAI/Anthropic/llama3 apps, then I will probably hold off until iPhone 17.

120Hz for all phones sounds like a decent upgrades (it's also overdue, though, given that even Google's middle class Pixel 8a comes with a 120Hz display).
Not that enthused by the increasing display size, though. At least not unless they bring back the Mini (it can be 5.7" oder 5.8", but I have the 11 Pro and I don't think I want a phone that is larger than the current one).

I've been holding my breath for Under-Display Face ID for what seems like eons now...

Apple's iPhone development roadmap runs several years into the future and the company is continually working with suppliers on several successive iPhone models concurrently, which is why we sometimes get rumored feature leaks so far ahead of launch. The iPhone 17 series is no different, and already we have some idea of what to expect from Apple's 2025 smartphone lineup.

If you plan to skip this year's iPhone 16, or if you're just plain curious about what's on the horizon, here are 10 rumored features that we are expecting to arrive in time for its successor, the iPhone 17 series, which is likely to be released in September 2025.

1. Under-Display Face ID
iPhone 17 Pro & iPhone 17 Pro Max
The iPhone 17 Pro is expected to be the first ‌iPhone‌ to feature under-panel Face ID technology. The only external indication of the under-display ‌Face ID‌ technology will likely be a circular cutout for the front-facing camera. This will probably be Apple's last premium model to include a circular cutout for the front-facing camera. Apple is then expected adopt under-display cameras in 2027's "Pro" ‌iPhone‌ models for a true "all-screen" appearance.

3. 120Hz ProMotion (Always-on Display)
iPhone 17 & iPhone 17 Plus
Apple intends to expand ProMotion to its standard models in 2025, allowing them to ramp up to a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and video content when necessary. Notably, ProMotion would also enable the display on the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus to ramp down to a more power-efficient refresh rate as low as 1Hz, allowing for an always-on display that can show the Lock Screen's clock, widgets, notifications, and wallpaper even when the device is locked.

4. Apple-Designed Wi-Fi 7 Chip
iPhone 17 Pro & iPhone 17 Pro Max
Apple's premium 2025 models are expected to be equipped with an Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip for the first time. Wi-Fi 7 support would allow the "Pro" models to send and receive data over the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands simultaneously with a supported router, resulting in faster Wi-Fi speeds, lower latency, and more reliable connectivity. The Wi-Fi chip would also allow Apple to further reduce its dependance on external suppliers like Broadcom, which currently supplies Apple with a combined Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip for iPhones.

5. 48MP Telephoto Lens
iPhone 17 Pro Max
An upgraded 48-megapixel Telephoto lens on Apple's largest premium device is expected to be optimized for use with Apple's upcoming Vision Pro headset, which launches on February 2, 2024. (The current iPhone 15 Pro models feature 48-megapixel main, 12-megapixel ultra wide, and 12-megapixel telephoto lenses.) That would make 2025's "Pro Max" the first iPhone to have a rear camera system composed entirely of 48-megapixel lenses, making it capable of capturing even more photographic detail.

6. 24MP Selfie Camera
All iPhone 17 Models
The iPhone 17 lineup will feature a 24-megapixel front-facing camera with a six-element lens, according to one rumor. The iPhone 14 and 15 feature a 12-megapixel front-facing camera with five plastic lens elements, and this year's iPhone 16 lineup is expected to feature the same hardware. The upgraded resolution to 24 megapixels on the iPhone 17 will allow photos to maintain their quality even when cropped or zoomed in, while the larger number of pixels will capture finer details. The upgrade to a six-element lens should also slightly enhance image quality.

7. Scratch Resistant Anti-Reflective Display
All iPhone 17 Models
The iPhone 17 will feature an anti-reflective display that is more scratch-resistant than Apple's Ceramic Shield found on iPhone 15 models, according to one rumor. The outer glass on the iPhone 17 is said to have a "super-hard anti-reflective layer" that is "more scratch-resistant." It's not clear whether Apple is planning to adopt the Gorilla Glass Armor that Samsung uses in its Galaxy S24 Ultra, but the description of Corning's latest technology matches the...
