Man, I'm in a 15 Pro Max and was hoping for something grand this year, but now I'm stuck with this thing potentially, which is nothing really, or a first gen Ultra (Fold), which may not have MagSafe, so can't really use it like I'd need to when driving out in the woods.

Sucks for me, as I may just have to grab this 18 and not be happy about it . No pre-order for sure and may try to wait another year.

Simplified Camera Control

New Design

Apple is reportedly working to simplify the Camera Control button's design on iPhone 18 models in order to reduce costs. The current Camera Control button on iPhone 17 models uses both capacitive and pressure sensors beneath a sapphire crystal surface. The capacitive layer detects touch gestures, while the force sensor recognizes different pressure levels for taps, presses, and swipes.

However, according to the Weibo-based account Instant Digital, Apple will remove the capacitive sensing layer and retain only pressure sensing recognition in the second iteration to achieve all Camera Control functions on the iPhone 18. The simplified version is not about reducing functionality in the button, but about saving money. The current solution is said to be very expensive for Apple and is generating costly after-sales repairs.
Every time I read information on the coming update to this silly Camera Control it contradicts the last report.

The first time I read the capacitive layer would be gone and the pressure sensor will be used to substitute for it to still allow swipe gestures.

Then I read the button functions would be simplified.

Now again I read it’s not about reducing functionality in the button.

Hoping for the sake of the user they simplify this to just being a shutter button. A half-press could focus and a press could snap, and all other functions could be eliminated… as the screen already handles everything just fine.

A half-press could also afford the user to peek through the camera when the Camera app is not open, so a user could then compress the button to snap, or let go to exit.

Few want a phone that heavy. It'll pull down your pants or weigh down whatever pockets you're using.

No thank you.

Honestly it depends what you want and I’m glad they finally have real options.

I went from pro max to pro for the 13 but back to the max for the 17.

It is indeed almost too big for my hands and it is kind of heavy.

But, with the right case with a grip and a few well placed magsafe stands, it’s usually functioning as a small handy computer for me. And when I do need to use it, I do like having the bigger screen to work with. I just have to accept that it’s mostly two handed.

Phone is increasingly a misnomer but even for that, speakerphone (when alone of course) or headphones covers that 90% of the time.

The standard 17 is finally just about perfect for people who don’t want the weight. And at some point they’ll get the Air right. For people who are carrying it around in small light clothing more often than I am, they probably should not get the pro max.

Remember Steve Jobs always wore jeans. So just avoid pocketing it in that way.

It was never true titanium. It’s titanium and aluminum bonded. I’m surprised Apple wasn’t sued for this, to be brutally honest.
As far as lawsuits go, you can legally say something is gold in many countries if it has only 8-10 caratage, so titanium bonded to other stuff and still called titanium probably passes the lawyer sniff test.

Maybe I should try to squeeze another year out of my 12 Pro. *sigh*
I wanted to. Still have it with AC+ but recently purchased a refurb 15 Pro from Apple. It's a nice upgrade but think I could have just put a new battery (again) on the 12 Pro and be good with it.

None of that is worth waiting for imo. If anything, these "upgrades" make a purchase of the 17 Pro seem like an even better decision. Most future-proofed iPhone in a while...

"Next-level battery life" and capacity is only increasing by 2% LMFAO.

Wake me up when titanium returns.
They switched from stainless to titanium for the 19 grams or 8% weight savings, but as the pro chips in the pro iPhones became more powerful some customers began to experience some level of overheating.

To fix this Apple added a vapour chamber and took a hit of a mere 5 grams or 2.5% weight gain (from the 19 grams savings) and changed to aluminium, as it allows for better heat dissipation.

It seems unlikely Apple will switch the pro phones back to titanium any time soon, if ever.

Only because you are comparing it to the heaviest titanium phone. It was an overall 22g increase from the 15PM to 17PM though. We are still 7g lighter than a 14PM, but the weight is creeping back up every generation. The addition of a bigger battery, thicker phone, and more hardware for camera aperture will likely make the 18PM the heaviest iPhone yet.

I don't get your logic. If a new phone is not better than your current phone, you're not losing out. That doesn't suck for you. You should be happy. Seeing it as being "stuck with" something that is fully functional and not significantly worse than a newer model doesn't make sense.

You don't have to spend your money. That's a win.

17PM is 10 grams heavier than 15PM (in Europe) not 22 grams (12 grams in the US with eSIM).

Yep, sorry. Did my conversions wrong. 0.42oz is 12g.

Not a lawyer but I doubt. Perhaps you’re right. Since they’re vultures circling. It’s still not technically titanium.

Also, don’t you mean karat?

Just blew my mind to discover streamed video playback on 15 Pro vs 17 Pro is 20 hrs vs 30 hrs.

50% longer battery life for streamed video in two years is crazy.

Max went from 25 hrs to 35 hrs (40%).

Average MacRumors user should be sat tied to a chair with their eyes held open starting at that information. Right under our noses are occurring amazing feats of engineering.
