I think this article is not titled properly, it looks more like a summary of leaks, so far.

Most reasons are always the same and strictly identical as every year: better chip, better camera. What’s new here is a better battery but that will translate to what? +1 hour? +10?

Finally, even the leaks state “incremental upgrade” that kind of make the “reasons” pointless.

I’m a huge fan of MR and you’re doing a fantastic job but this time I’m puzzled but the intent of this article.

It’s not the Dynamic Island that might get smaller, it’s the cutout for the front-facing camera and Face ID hardware that might get smaller. The Dynamic Island, being a software thing whose size is dynamic, will remain the same size(s).

If we do get a smaller cutout that's still shaped like a pill, it’ll be accomplished by moving one or two Face ID components under the display, but not all of them, since if all of them were moved, all that would be needed is a circular hole punch cutout to retain clarity for the selfie camera.

I am about to buy a 17 Pro. i finally got my hands on one and was impressed. I am still using my 13 Pro. Can you say how this regression feels to you (who cares what it looks like) or how it affects it's performance or possible shelf-life?
Because if I didn’t put a case on it it would get scratched and dinged just by looking at it.

Think it will be a minor update when compared to the 17 Pro. It will have the usual yearly speed improvements due to the new chip. The new rumored red color, if it materializes, will be fantastic.

🤷‍♂️

Fair enough, but I know I wouldn't notice an extra 50-100g in any way at all. It would certainly have no effect on my jeans!

Perhaps if you wear jogging pants or something loose with no belt then there's such a thing as too heavy, but I'm still not convinced that it'd be an issue with a chunkier phone. And if that was the tradeoff for a guaranteed 2-day battery life then I still feel most people would choose it.

But anyway, it's not like there isn't an iPhone Air option these days that specifically targets thinness/light weight at the expense of battery life for people that are scared of belts 🙂 Hence, presumably, why Apple feel comfortable increasing weight/thickness in their premium models.
Don't agree. Apple keeps adding weight to the recent phones. A 10-15g at a time, but it adds up. The most recent iPhone 17 pro is 20g heavier than the iPhone 15 pro for example.
