As a new X owner I can confidently say that the points raised by the OP are in no way valid. I was worried about the notch as well about the FaceID - in real world the notch is not noticeable at all and face unlock works much more reliably and seamlessly than touch ever did for me. Transition from home button to gestures took me less than an hour and is extremely intuitive. Yes, it’s expensive. So what, it’s preview technology.

My biggest gripes with the device is a) it doesn’t have usb-c b) it’s very smooth, makes it easy to drop. Otherwise, it’s as perfect as it gets.

1 Screen size

If you're upgrading from the 6/6S/7, then the screen size of the X will simply be stretched. If however you're upgrading from a Plus model, your screen will be narrower, albeit longer. This to me is a deal breaker. I am a Plus owner, I don't want to be watching media on a narrower but stretched screen.

2 The notch.

Have you ever had dinner with someone and as they're talking to you you lose focus of what they're saying because you noticed they have sauce or food stuck to the side of their lip? Well the notch is not too dissimilar. My eyes are drawn to it. If it bothers me, it will bother you. To those who say it won't bother you, you haven't got the device yet.

3 It is not edge to edge display

I still see bezels. They may be thinner, but they're still there. Rumours early on suggested the X would be like a slate of glass. Sorry, but it's not. Far from it. There are bezels there. Throw in the notch, throw in the black borders that the software will put in, throw in the narrower screen size to the Plus, and you're not really watching content on this magnifificent edge to edge giant screen, are you? You will be disappointed.

4 No home button

For 10 years you have used the home button. Up until the 5, it was a push and then a slide across. From the 5s, it was simply a push. Worked beautifully. I myself never registered all of my fingers for touch ID, I never registered my two little fingers, so if I just wanted to see the time or a notification without opening the phone, I'd use my little finger. That will be no more with the X. Now you got to get used to making sure the phone sees you, wait a little bit, then swipe up. Don't underestimate how this will force you to change your habits, when you''re driving, when you're in a meeting, when you're half asleep or in any situation when you shouldn't be looking at your phone. You will not be able to discreetly unlock your X. Think about it, for 10 years you touched a button, now you got to look at it, wait a couple of seconds, and swipe up. I'm sure there will be many other instances which will play out when you use the device.

5 Face ID

Following on from point 4, Face ID was not Apple's preference. It is simply the technology Apple had to fall back on when they realised that their preference would not be workable in time for the launch. They wanted touch ID under the screen. This in itself is an admission from Apple that touching your phone is still the best and securest method to unlock your phone, though Apple will never publicly admit it, except of course when screen touch id is available in a future phone and they will spend half the keynote talking about how it pisses all over Face ID. Apple wanted screen touch id, we all wanted screen touch id , but not to be. Instead, you will be getting a product which Apple added as a compromise. Basically, if Apple could have got screen touch ID to work, it would have been in the X. Samsung couldn't get touch screen ID to work, so it put the touch ID button at the back. Apple couldn't get screen touch id to work, so it went with Face id. What's the difference, they are both inferior compromises? The 8 Plus will still have the trusty home button with touch ID that you have all grown to love.

6 Two handed use

When the 6 Plus was released 3 years ago, this place was in meltdown about the iPhone no longer being a one handed device. Well the X will take it to another level. The screen is now longer, yes shorter bezels at the top and bottom, but unbelievably, the X won't come with reachability. Expect to see that back in a future software update or device once Apple realises that they screwed up in getting rid of reachability. But, and this is a huge but, you have to swipe down right of the notch for control centre and left of the notch for notifications. Good luck with your one handed use X owners.

7 Specs

There is alot of similarities between the 8 Plus and the X. Both will have similar cameras, the same glass back, wireless charging, same storage capacity, same water resistant rating, both will have 3 gigs of ram, both will have the same A11 chip and both will have augmented reality. To me, the only benefit you're gonna get with the X over the 8 Plus is a little bit more with the camera and Animojis. But the 8 Plus camera will be a beast and I'm tipping after 2 weeks, if not 2 days, X users will over the animojis. But you see, the 8 Plus will have its own advantages, a wider screen and touch id. Honestly, is the X that much of a superior device?

8 Colours

Not a biggy, but the gold colour the 8s will come in is probably the sleekest colour I have seen on an iphone. It looks magnificent. For those who still see the iphone as a fashion accessory, which I personally don't, you won't get the X in that colour.

9 Price.

The X will be the most expensive iphone in history. If you live in Australia like me, you'll be forking out $1,800 for the 256g model. That is not only insane, it is a rip off. If you want to fork out that much for a phone with a narrower screen than a Plus, a notch which will block your content, a device you cannot use with one hand, no trusted touch id home button and Face Id which was Apple's second choice because it was not good enough to make screen id work, then be my guest, you've got more dollars than sense.

10 First Gen

It is a first gen device. Buyer beware. Beware beware beware. I'm sure in years to come the notch will go, reachability will be back, the bezels will be thinner, the width of the screen will be equal to the Plus and touch id will be back bigger and better than ever, under the screen.. and then I will get myself an X...but until then, beware the X.

You have been warned.

Thinking if your #8 reason was a bit different, say close to what it is in the states, your other reasons would have been less important to you. Don't blame you. $1800 for a phone is just dumb

I keep seeing this said every now and again. Out of interest, why do you want USB-C? What’s wrong with lightning? It’s a genuine question.

I think also Tim Cook isn’t an idiot. You don’t make a true 5.8 inch iPhone with edge to edge display that is both the same width and length as the 8 plus. Not unless you want to purposely hurt your 8 plus sales.

Not sure if anyone pointed this out but there is, in fact, Reachability on iPhone X. It is simply not enabled by default. Once enabled from Settings > General > Accessibility, you trigger it but swiping down at the bottom of the screen. Intuitive.

you're gonna lose the equivalent of 1 year of your life waiting for Face ID to activate lol, it looks so damn slow, goid luck with that.

Sounds like silliness from someone without the phone. Sorry.

I went from a 6+ to the X, and it is magnificent. The smaller size form with an almost equivalent screen size is killer. I loved the real estate of the +, but it was a tank to carry, mount in my car, and run with. FaceID is seamless, so much so you are not even aware it is working 95% of the time. Speed? SO much faster than the thumb ID process, which was balky at times. Plus, many apps just instantly log you in with your face (like my alarm system for instance... which cuts getting into the app down from 10-15 secs to just instantly open). The notch is a non-existent issue, seriously not an issue. Like it or not, this is the iPhone's future. Is a bit more than 12 bucks a month for tomorrows tech worth it? YMMV.

Two real reasons I went with the X. The camera (worth it). The smaller size but + screen size (worth it). Everything else is wonderful gravy on top.

Following on from point 4, Face ID was not Apple's preference. It is simply the technology Apple had to fall back on when they realised that their preference would not be workable in time for the launch.

I stopped reading there. Up until this point it sounded just like another person who can't for the life of them imagine that their own preferences and tastes are not universal.

Then it got to ******** "I know every secret Apple ever has had, but only if they fit my narrative. See above for the reason why."

1. Love the new screen.
2. Have the device and love. If you obsess over it maybe it will bother you.
3. That what happens if you live your life and believe all rumors. It’s exactly as they described.
4. What a great idea. Love the new interface and lack of home button. I’m more efficient and faster.
5. Another brilliant addition. Works great and goes with item 4 above.
6. Two handed use, not. I came from a 7+ and used one hand. X is even easier.
7. Maybe similar but not the same. Totally different phones.
8. Well, maybe you have scored one correctly. However, most people use case so phone color isn’t an issue.
9. Well it’s the best. Buy a basic droid for nothing or get a real smart phone and pay the $$$. It’s like comparing a Chevy to a Cadillac.
10. Ah, isn’t that the way technology is? It always gets better right? BTW, reachability does exist so this leads me to believe you’re just an Apple hatter and don’t even have the X.

You have been corrected.

I don't know if anyone has said it but reachability is certainly on iPhone X.

If you do not regret buying the X, then that's good, it gives the rest of us some confidence for the future about the iphone. If you do regret it, then there is always hope that future iterations will address the issues that have caused you regret.

At the end of the day what we all want is an iphone or a smartphone that makes us all happy. I for one opted out this year because there were certain things about the X that I knew I would not handle. I didn't just want to learn to deal with it or accept it or get used to it.

I will reserve judgement until next year's release.

I'm sure the iPhone X is a great device, but I personally stuck with the 8 Plus because while I think the X is good, I typically don't buy first generation products. The 8 Plus is a proven, solid design. Yes, it's dated and a little bloated, but it's a device I am perfectly comfortable using. I will wait a year and see what Apple has in store for the X next year, I am hoping for an X Plus.

I would say you are totally right until I got my iPhoneX today.

I’ve Been using the plus models since 6Plus and Upgrading from iPhone 7plus, I am used to the big screen, and the X screen is just really small, yeah it is a little bigger than the 7, but definitely smaller than the plus, thats okay but what apple didn’t tell you is that, try to use certain apps in landscape mode, the bar that replaces the home button will make the usable screen area even smaller than the 7, go try an X to play some games at apple store and you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Other than the screen size, the problem is the notch and the round corners of the screen. The notch bothers me more than I thought it would and because of the round corners of the screen, a lot of space at the bottom of the screen are usually just blank or not being utilized at all. Just look at the keyboard when you type........

I blame myself for not doing enough research and believed the x screen is actually bigger.
This is the very first time I’ve ever regretted getting a new iPhone, and I’ve bought a new iPhone every year since the original iPhone. I am typing this on my iPhone 7 Plus because I just can’t stand using the X. Yeah the x is nicely built and I had been waiting for a iPhone made with glasses on top and bottom sides with stainless steel around it(iphone4) and with bigger screen, but this is definely not it. I believe apple will come out with an iPhone X Plus next year (it is their marketing strategy not to release a plus this year so ppl who bought the X will upgrade to x Plus next year), so I might just trade in the X for 8Plus.
I knew the rounded corners would be a problem. You can’t design content into rounded corners. Therefore having them is really a waste. Unless from the get-go you accept that space is luxury space and you always have content well away from the corners. Just look at how dreadful the icons look at the top corners.

I was never in the market for an iPhone 8/8+

Neither was I, even though I think it's a great phone. I just can't justify the upgrade from my 7 Plus to an iPhone 8, considering the iPhone X was going to meet most of my expectations as it was.

Does anyone know the reason why reachabilty is disabled by default?

It's amazing how one device can be so polarizing. I had both and I chose the 8 Plus.

The notch isn't a 'non-issue.' I could not get used to it and always seemed to notice it. The narrower screen meant smaller text and a cramped keyboard. Not interested in trying to make the text bigger. I was totally ok with Face ID as it worked almost every time for me, even in low lighting. It just wasn't the device I was looking for.

The responses on this forum remind me that is not much of a community anymore. If anyone disagrees with the consensus, they are ridiculed. It's just not right. Buy what you like and allow others to do the same.

I’m loving all the comments that are saying the X’s screen is way better then a the 8 plus, despite it being lower ppi and nits than a Note 5 or Galaxy S6.

I’m sure the 57 extra ppi the X users are getting over the plus users are going to make night and day differences.

Wait until the reviews and comparisons are out. Side by side I bet you have to scrutinise any differences in screen between the 2, in fact the plus is far more viewable due to aspect ratio and how content fits on it.
**this is not true, lol... i am sitting here with both and actually more content and more everything fits on the X screen than 7 plus**, yes X is skinnier, but I always thought Plus was way too fat..

Remember the iPhone 5 height extension well this is revision 2, but you can’t even say you have a quad HD screen to display it on!

Roll on the X-2, that will be truly the next gen Apple device.

It’s not your fault we all made the same mistake. If I told you that I was giving you a 5.8 inch edge to edge phone. You would prob think it was something approaching phablet territory. Not something that looks stretched and skinny.

Or, like most of us that were considering dropping a grand on a new phone, you watched the keynote, and the dozen+ hands on videos posted by youtubers that were there, any one of which you’d see the size of it quite clearly. There also many other videos and pics in the days leading up to the pre-orders that you could see direct size comparisons. Heck even the Apple website gives the exact dimensions.

I mean, you’re about to spend $1k+ on a phone, we all did at least a little research, right? Right?

I keep seeing this said every now and again. Out of interest, why do you want USB-C? What’s wrong with lightning? It’s a genuine question.

Because it’s the contemporary standard connector? It would allow me to use my laptop charger on the phone for example. And I could just use a standard cable, instead of gaving to buy an extra usb-c to lightning. Which is an additional proprietary cable to keep track of.

You are totally wrong, these are the things ppl were thinking before they got x in hand. But after getting in hand and use it personally it’s the beautiful experience. Notch, screen size etc. etc. are no issue at all.
