Hey! They gotta' pay for that ring they built! "future" iPhone and future cost pattern. Get used to it.

I know, maybe you bought an iPhone in the past and it was close to $1000 so this isn't a big deal for you. Or maybe you can justify any price for an iPhone because it's the one gadget you use day in and day out.

But I gotta be honest, it absolutely sucks that the X starts at $1000.

I'm a veteran iPhone user like probably many of you. My history is 3G to 4 to 5 to 6 Plus to 7 to 6S Plus. And yes, I'm going to buy the X if I can get my hands on it during pre-orders.

But man, this just sucks. Samsung S8 retails for $750 and it's just a shame the X doesn't start at the price or at least closer to it. I know, there are other iPhone's if I really must upgrade. But I don't want those. I want the X.

The only way I can justify this X purchase is knowing that I will upgrade after 12 months. This way I can avoid paying $200 for AppleCare+ (side note....$200 now!??!?!), and in the end I'll end up paying $500 (ugh) to lease the X for 12 months.

But still, this sucks. And I know, no one is forcing me to upgrade, but I want to. And I'm sure many of you feel the same way as me. The mere fact that the iPhone model I truly want now starts at $1000 bothers me greatly.

They will keep pumping up the prices as long as people throw their money at them. I have heard many people complaining about the price of the X however Iv also noticed that the people complaining also mention that they will be ordering the X anyway which is the cause of the issue. If you knew that you could sell something for a $1000 why sell if for $750? Until Apple prices their phones high enough that sales figures dramatically drop we will not see a price drop. We are the cause of our own problems here and until we stay faithful to our own complaints nothing will change.

I'll buy it because it's a small increase for me monthly ($1.20 more per month). With all of the features, it is definitely worth it in my eyes. Understand that it's a high price tag, but at least Apple is giving you plenty of options across their product line. Also, if you are willing to use an Android device, there is a lot of hardware that you can get for free.

At least it's almost guaranteed that next year's X successor will be cheaper, making the X for those who can afford to fuel development. Apple designed it to be the most useful phone and not primarily affordable. They could well have called it the iPhone Pro and gotten less short term criticism, but that wouldn’t have made sense unless they developed something like an 8 plus for next year.

Actually, I don't think that the X's successor next year will be any cheaper.. I think that the price tag of $999 is here to stay (unfortunately). I could imagine that Apple will release its last iPhones with home buttons, marketed as the new and awesome "iPhone 9", perhaps with slimmer bezels or something. Then there will be an XI or whatever they are going to call it which is a continuation of the X's design.
iPhone 9 will then be there to stay for many years as the 'cheaper' but clunkier alternative to the expensive "X"-line. Furthermore, I think that the iPhone X will be discountinued when a new version is released next year.

I really want the iPhone X and had decided to buy it until I watched the Keynote. I am a bit disappointed that they did not include the 120 hz display as well as the brightness (which is less important to me). It is mainly the Promotion display I miss and that actually got me rethinking. However, I could easily see myself come around and buy it as I think it looks just gorgeous :p But the production delay seems to be way more serious than previously anticipated, especially as demand will probably be incredibly high. Therefore, if I can't get my hands on an iPhone X before 2Q17, I will probably skip it and wait for september 2018.

£1000 is actually ridiculous. And because so many people are (seemingly) willing to fork it out, Apple will most likely price all of its future phones the same way. And I used to think paying £550 in 2015 for my 6S was expensive.
It will be interesting to see what sales are like for this X. Personally, it will do well, but not as well as Apple thinks it will. Just my opinion die to the vast amounts of people already complaining about the price - Xpensive.

Yeah, every iPhone in a configuration that you really want (a bit more storage, with a case, etc.) has run for $1000 or more over the past few years, so it's nothing really new.

But you're right: It's a lot of money. And the happiness that comes from the acquisition of material things is ephemeral indeed, especially when what you currently have is more than good enough.

I may get it for me....but it's no longer 'new phones for everybody' as other family members roll off their plan. In the past, it was an automatic that if it was time for a new phone, you'd get the newest thing available.

I've got 6 phones on our family account (me, wife, 2 kids, mother, mother-in-law). My wife still has a 16 gig 6 and will be fine with a 7 or 8 when she's ready to upgrade. My college age daughter has a 6s. She'll be paying for at least 1/2 of any phone she gets. My HS age son has a 6. Same deal for him. The mother/mother-in-law are fine with what they have. If their phones break, I can get them the oldest phone still being sold as new and they will be fine.

I was also the one person who upgraded 'every new release.' But I"m off that wagon was well. I realized there was nothing in the 7 that I really wanted. The 6s continued to be great. I'll likely wait until the second version of the X to upgrade..

$1000 over the course of 24 months still equals $1000 last time I checked.

Not if you apply “Female Logic” (trigger warning). You simply decide to buy a New MAC Pro in your mind, then seconds later, substitute an iPhone X for the Mac Pro. Voila, you just saved over $3000!!!

Anyone who is offended has never been married.

Well, you could have used a phrase like "my wife's logic" rather than applying that broad brush to an entire gender. :D

What other phone charges lots of money for a stylus.?
[doublepost=1506053754][/doublepost]

It's not just the stylus, though I do think the Note 8 is too expensive too. There's a ton of software required to do the interesting things the Note does. It's not my thing, but it is pretty sophisticated.

The S8 has a sensor filled bezel at the top of the screen to go along with the digital sensors right under it on the screen with a 835 chip that’s slower then an A10 chip with an 1 year old operating system on it.

The 835 is not slower than the A10. It is in some things, and it's faster than the A10 in others. Android is very well optimized for multi-core processing, and it takes advantage of the good multi-core performance the 835 has. It's effectively on par with the A10, except in a few key things like video encoding, as Apple has hardware encoders in the chip, and Qualcomm doesn't, so it's done in software.

The 835 is also on a different release cycle than the apple chips, as they update in March or so. It's not too surprising that the A11 bests the 835, though the degree to which Apple improved the A11 is a surprise...it's really great silicon.

Truthfully, the X is a no-go for me. That notch is ugly, and a stupid design choice. If it was not there I would be all over this phone.

My hope is that 2018 brings a model that corrects for this an other flaws (missing fingerprint reader through the glass).

I have the Note 8 and I can promise it does not take 3 minutes. Took about 1-1.5 minutes. Then again, I could just pop my SD card out and right into my computer in a mere 10 seconds!

Honestly though, this has always been a strong point for Apple so it's not surprising.

Oh no. My wife would have found out, she always does, and I’d have been right back in the doghouse. BTDT!

Agree. I’m waiting until the phone is implanted in my head and Siri can read my mind.

256GB iPhone 8 Plus @ $949

256GB all-display OLED iPhone X with Face ID tech +$200 --> $1149

That's a pretty okay pricing scheme if you ask me. I'm sure the custom shaped display isn't cheap, and Apple has never been known to have slim profit margins - plus all the R&D and tech that goes into the TrueDepth camera and Face ID. I don't know why anyone is surprised here.

It might be if the 8 plus wasn't overpriced to begin with. And Apple likes to charge a premium every time they design something new, but all the other manufacturers just roll with it. The 8 plus getting a price bump for a modest body redesign and a faster processor is pretty ridiculous to me.

Just look at Apple's past. When the iPhone went from the 3Gs to the 4, we got a massive upgrade in display technology (with the same density that the 8 still uses), a massive upgrade in design and material construction, totally revamped cameras (including the addition of a new one), plus the other usual upgrades....and the cost was identical. Now look at the 8 plus, which is the same design that came out in 2014, with the same screen, same essentially everything except for the processor (which gets updated every year for every phone ever) and wireless charging, which isn't that hard to implement. And they charge $50 more than last year.

Oh, and while you can now fast charge like 90% of the competition, you need to spend an additional $60 for the high wattage brick and cable just to be able to actually use it.

I saw on the iPhone subreddit someone mention this: the A11 has a hardware .264 encoder, while the 835 does not...so it's hardware vs. software encoding. The A11 will certainly perform video encoding faster as a result. However, it is not indicative of other general task performance.

Agreed. One thing you can’t knock the Galaxy for is it’s screen. Apple has priced this so high yet there are so many solid phones available at a much better price. The price hike for me is unforgivable and I’ll be making the switch to Android once the galaxy s9 arrives and Iv owned iPhones for at least 8 years so this is a big move for me.
