Apple Announces Pending Release of iOS 4.1, 4.2 Coming in November

At today's keynote event, Steve Jobs announced the upcoming availability of iOS 4.1 for the iPhone and iPod touch. Jobs noted that the long running proximity sensor, Bluetooth, and iPhone 3G performance bugs that have been raised by users will be fixed in this update.

New features to iOS 4.1 include High Dynamic Range photos, HD video upload over Wi-Fi, TV show rentals, and Apple's Game Center will make its official debut.

High Dynamic Range photos are photos created using 3 separate photos captured in quick succession at varying exposure levels. The photos are then combined using some complex algorithms to create an enhanced composite photo. Game Center, which was first introduced earlier this year, will officially be included in iOS 4.1 and allows gamers to invite others to play, post scores to online leaderboards, and more.

iOS 4.1 will be available next week for iPhone and iPod touch and will be a free update.

Jobs also revealed that iOS 4.2 will be released in November, finally bringing iOS 4.x support to the iPad. The free update will include wireless printing as well as a new feature called AirPlay, which replaces AirTunes. AirPlay will offer streaming of video, music, and photos. iOS 4.2 will be compatible with the iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone.

Wow! The HDR feature will be amazing! I'm still waiting for the iTunes 10 to be available for download. This iOS 4.1 should be great too! I will have to download that next week. Tons of bug fixes and Game Center! November will be fun too. I will probably buy an iPad in November when the new 4.2 comes out. Wireless Printing on iDevices, way to go Apple! Great update. Great coverage MacRumors. Keep up the great work! :p
 
It sounds like one of the major features of 4.2, AirPlay, is only going to be available on the iPad. Or at least that's the way Jobs made it sound. Bummer.

iPhone 5 for Verizon coming out today... nyahahahahahahaha drooooooling time.. where is the so called iPhone announcement going to Verizon. Why not come to AT&T... nyahahahahaha

I would wait a little before buying, as it's likely they will announce new ipads jan/feb next year.

I swear that pic with the cathedral in it on the touch is my hometown of Bury St Edmunds, in fact I'm virtually certain

This was not an iPhone event. Why would they talk about that?
 
Did anyone notice when Steve said HDR will be included for the iPad when 4.2 comes out. Wonder what this is pointing to?
 
Excellent. The email he wrote back to me addressing the rumors of the sensor not being fixed is correct.

how come no one is talking aout Steve's slip when he saud HDR for ipad in november? that means a ipad with a camera!

Because maybe it was just a slip and nothing else. Just like when he was introducing Leopard and he referred it to Tiger several times.
