Pretty excited about the HDR photos, I find myself needing this feature more and more often. I wonder what 4.2 will include for the iPhone in November, I know it brings major updates to the iPad but certainly there will be something updated on the iPhone as well...

AND DID HE SAY PROXIMITY ISSUES FIXED?!!! If so that will be the best update, can't believe more people aren't talking about it.

I am with you on that one. While I didn't have the death grip issues, I hang up on folks every day if I try to multi-task with the phone. Finally something I'm interested in.

I can tell you that the GM of iOS 4.1 on the 3G runs incredibly fast.
I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-Y. You can't even compare it to 3.1.2.
No HDR, and the proximity sensor seems to work again - as it was broken even for me on the 3G.

Great job, but it tends me to believe that the 3G performance was on purpose - or out of laziness.

Because maybe it was just a slip and nothing else. Just like when he was introducing Leopard and he referred it to Tiger several times.

He also referred to the iPod Touch 4G as a new iPhone several times.

My question is whether HDR will be available for the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 only?

I upgraded to iTunes 10 and sync'd my 3G. Running 4.0.1 and did NOT upgrade to 4.1. But this alone seems to have improved performance drastically. Apps start quickly and are responsive. No lag at all. Anyone else notice this?

Updating to 4.1 now, will post an update shortly.

Just noticed that in 4.1, the App Store is using high resolution icons. Nice.

For the life of me I don't know why anybody would want a camera on the iPad. A low res FaceTime camera maybe but a back facing camera? I just don't see people using such.

A rear facing camera, like on the iPhone, would allow for showing things to people without having to flip the device around. I use the rear facing camera on face time when I want to show something to the other party in my environment while I still see their face. Remote assistance is a great application for this capability.

What speeded up my 3G on 4.0.1 was resetting the iPhone, the Apple hotline suggested that. It was still laggy compared to 3.1.3, though.

I updated to iTunes 10 now, it free'd 120MB storage on my iPhone and it seems even a little bit faster again.

After all, it's usable again.

Thank god they finally got 4.1 out..

My 3G actually works now.. Still slow of course, but no longer hangs forever every other minute.

And I won't pretend to be very grateful, because I think it is horrendous that they broke our phones with 4.0, then waited this long to fix it again. That really doesn't inspire confidence that Apple makes things that "just works", the one thing that made (a lot of) people forget their unique take on customer service. :p

You're not really narrowing it down there, are ya? The only possibilities are that it was intentional (i.e. "on purpose") or unintentional. If it was unintentional, either it was a massive set of circumstances outside of Apple's control, or, essentially, laziness.

:'( running iOS 4.1 on my iPhone 4 and the Prox Sensor issue continues :'( thought was suppose to be fixed :'(

This is what I was afraid of. To me, it seems like a hardware issue that they're trying to fix with a software update. Most people with 3G and 3GS I know that have updated to 4.0 have never experienced this issue. The fact that they moved the sensor on the iPhone 4 to make room for the camera leads me to believe that something got messed up along the way. I think they should still be able to figure out how to tweak the software enough to correct the problem but I'm not surprised to hear that they may not have yet with this update.

Gonna be a test of our patience to finally get "Folders" on our iPads. :)
I love the idea of folders and the way they show it's a folder with the outer grey rim, but what I hate is the teeny-tiny icons that make up the folder icon. I think Apple should have a standard set of icons that represent all of the categories of apps that automatically default to something that represents the category (Chess Knight for games, etc).

I'm assuming those of you running 4.1 on the 3G are using the latest "final" developer release, and it's not available to the general public yet?

I get nothing when I check for updates in iTunes, and I thought the release date is Wednesday next week.

Final developer release yes. Certainly release to the world, just not directly by Apple. :p

Can we get more feedback about the proximity sensor fix from those of you running the final version of 4.1 already?

HDR...wow. I would think they would let us adjust at least the WB or shutter before they try to tackle HDR. This will surely be garbage. I mean, Ps is just now getting to the point of getting nice results.

HDR on an iPhone, when will they stop. If they partner with leica, I will surely upgrade my phone. Haha. I would be able to take a picture and then answer a call and then swing my M6 around and grab the moment with film as well.

HDR...haha
