They didn't release the 8GB iPhone 3GS until after the iPhone 4 came out in 2010.
I'm still not sure what everyone is arguing. If anything that makes my argument stronger? If they started at 16GB in 2009 and still start at 16GB in 2016, then I'm not sure how you guys think they're suddenly going to jump up to 64GB just because it has been at 16GB for so long?

Well just the same, you miscorrected someone which ironically made your argument weaker.

I actually also don't think they'll jump to 64GB base storage. It took too long for them to even drop 8GB.

Well, there's the other way of looking at it and saying that the longer they've been stuck with something the more dated it has become the more likely they will change it sooner rather than later. They've already done it with the recent new iPads, and they've also finally bumped things up when it comes to RAM recently as well, so it's the likelihood seems fairly decent.

Just had a thought: The iPhone 7 is rumored to look largely like the iPhone 6/6s. The main difference seems to be a little thinner, the removal of the headphone jack and the antenna lines that cross the frame. What if this model was just a stop-gap measure until the real upgrade comes out in 2017? That's the 10 year anniversary of the iPhone.

They could really change the design drastically. OLED display that goes to nearly all edges with reduced top and bottom "chin" bezel. Integrated Touch ID in the display. Full water proofing. Seamless Liquid Metal enclosure material which supports different colors mixed into the material itself. Perhaps even the dual-camera system or an improved version if the iPhone 7 has it—or bringing it to the smaller size if only the Plus gets it. Sapphire laminated Gorilla Glass would be necessary for display Touch ID. 32/128/256GB capacities.

There will probably be some magic new features I can't even come up with on the spot. Perhaps variable electric field friction for haptic feedback in the display as was rumored a few years ago? Maybe that could be a way to simulate a ridged button with no physical Touch ID: The instant it senses your finger on the display it turns on the field that creates the ridge sensation. Perhaps the OLED display, since it can turn off all black pixels, could just leave a circle on the display for Touch ID and not drain the battery much while sleeping. Or maybe I'm overthinking it and the whole display could sense Touch ID, so that it wakes up once it senses a fingerprint on the display. This would keep it from coming on accidentally from other skin touches. Or maybe how hard you push down with your finger, combining the Touch ID sensors with 3D Touch. Should be interesting!

So what do you guys think? Will Apple do a half-redesign for the iPhone 7 and then break their cycle with the iPhone 7s/iPhone 10th anniversary model? They recently went with a new name in the iPhone SE. Maybe they will change the naming for this new iPhone? Do you think this could be the iPhone Pro and they would charge more for it? Do you think since it's the 10th anniversary, that they would be willing to break the cycle like they did the first year the iPhone came out, going from the one model with the original iPhone design to the 3g?
Next year is the 10th anniversary but this will be the 10th year oft he iPhone. Not sure which is more special.

Can I just say (as I feel I started this little debate) I never actually said the 64Gb would be the base, all I said was out of the OP comments I would say the 64Gb would go over the 32Gb.

I guess I still don't understand exactly what you mean then, lol. No offense, I'm just genuinely confused and not sure how to ask in a different way.

Haha no worries going from your 1st post you said 32/128/256

In my opinion I feel that the 64Gb would need to be there instead of the 32Gb, so for example 64/128/256. If the current storage bases went 32/64/128 I think more of the 64Gb would sell over the 32Gb. Thus going by a hypothetical theory I think the 64 would be there first.

The cheapest one (base model) always sells the most, and that's at 16GB, let alone 32.

So that would make the base model 64GB, which is what you said you weren't saying? The base model is the cheapest model, the one with the least storage. Unless you consider the SE the new base model? The SE will stay at 16GB next year. It's priced pretty cheap and for $100 more you get four times the storage, which is a pretty good deal at $499.

I think Apple probably prices like this, using hypothetical numbers as an example:

Ok. So we're at a point where 16GB isn't viable under iOS X, the usable storage space available has decreased, and the size of apps has gone up over time. So let's do some testing. Ok, so our research shows that 60% of users only need 32GB. So we'll start there as a base. 30% need 128GB, and 10% need 256GB. So we'll go with that because 20% of users only need 64GB, and if we started with a 64GB base then we'd have 60% (32GB need) + 20% (64GB need), which is 80% of our users buying the 64GB model. We would lose out on upselling to 20% of users! Across 100M devices sold that would be a loss of potentially 10 billion dollars! (Note: Obviously not everyone will pay the extra $100 but you get the idea). Furthermore, we might capture some 32GB users by offering four times as much space for only $100 more. If we started at 64GB then some of those customers might not think it's as great of a deal to upgrade from 64GB to 128GB. So we start at 32GB and make more money per device shipped by upselling!
I really doubt starting at 64GB would increase sales much over 32GB. They might get a little more volume of sales, but would that offset their upsell? 32GB is the next logical step.

Are you serious?????

Apple does what Apple does BEST: IGNORE EVERYONE ELSE!

Look at the iPhone SE - they released yet the same display device in 2016. AND they got all you guys creaming your shorts already!

They can release an iPhone 7 looking identical to the iPhone 6 and you guys will line up. I'm also in line for one :D But I want to see what they will include in the battery department. I'm not going to like it if they make another thin phone sacrificing battery life. The line has to be drawn in 2016.

Apple could turn the radio chip on so you could receive free am/fm radio right on your phone over the radio airwaves. Not wifi or LTE. Be pretty inexpensive too.

Glad to see the latest rumors are now aligning with my theory in this thread that the iPhone 7 will be a stop-gap until the redesigned 10th anniversary model in 2017. I'm just not sure what I think about all glass. On the one hand it would look super sleek, but on the other it would be so prone to damage like the old iPhone 4/s. Either way I'll probably just keep it in a case like I always do, so it won't matter. I'm just wondering if they've got anything up their sleeve with some new stronger form of glass laminated with sapphire or something? Makes sense when some of the rumors or supply chain were talking about flexible OLED displays for the 2017 timeframe.

This is one of the few times I feel confident saying what Steve Jobs would do --

Neither would be more special, because Jobs would ignore such an anniversary. He deplored "anniversary" products, and was quite vocal about the company focusing only on the future, and never what they had done in the past. Unlike other corporations, Apple has no museum, or archive on it's campus, or under its curations as a result.

If Apple makes such an "anniversary" product, it will most definitely be contrary to Steve's wishes and everything he stood for.

Well, Apple released this a month after Steve returned to Apple. I think Ive may have even helped design it? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twentieth_Anniversary_Macintosh

I don't think they would actually call it an anniversary model, but I think they might internally be thinking about it and come out with a crazy new design to showcase how far it has come. So don't think about it so literally, just more about the team behind it being more motivated to make something spectacular that they can build and iterate upon for years to come.

I'll keep it brief but I'm going on record right now.

June 29th, 2017........10 year Anniversary iPhone (iPhone 7) with a complete redesign. Apple Campus 2's first product and first time media granted access to the new location. Phone will go for pre order that very night. It will be a massive event with people from all over the world in attendance.

This year we will get another iPhone 6 design.......typical upgrades like processor, storage and camera upgrades. No 3.5mm headphone port.

How can you read that article and then say that? The TAM was released in March 1997, Jobs may have sold Next to Apple in February, but he Wasn't named iCEO until September 1997. One of the first things he did as iCEO was kill the TAM, along with the Newton. Do some research, Jobs hated the TAM. And Ive was just one of many designers at Apple at the time, one who was afraid Jobs would fire him after he took over.

Jobs also found a room during a tour containing all of Apple's archives which he ordered destroyed, promoting his forward thinking philosophy, but fortunately he was encouraged to donate them to Stanford.

An "Anniversary" product goes against everything Jobs stood for. He wouldn't intentionally withhold innovation, or put less effort into a product to save it for an anniversary release. And Jobs would expect the same amount of effort an innovation, and outside the box thinking in every device they make, every year. If Apple is withholding technology for an arbitrary celebration, or worse yet failing to do their best work every year, then Apple is right back where jobs found them in 1997, citing the TAM as an example of everything that was wrong with Apple.

Perhaps the iPhone Pro? That would be a quick turn around for the standard models.

If the next iPhone turns out to be a stop-gap for the 2017 iPhone, I hope they don't call it the "iPhone 7" since the 2017 major redesign would have to be the iPhone 8 (then an 8s in 2018).

That would just throw-off the naming scheme (not that it's unflawed now, I mean the iPhone with an A6 chip was the iPhone 5, the iPhone 6,1 was the iPhone 5s, and the iPhone 6 is the 8th iPhone; I blame it all on the iPhone 3G, since its SoC was kept the same and thus remained as the iPhone 1,x). Interestingly, the iPhone 10,1 will be the 2017 iPhone.

Every year we speculate about that BIG UPGRADE. Every year, it feels incremental and more of the same. Learn not to get your hopes up.

I can't believe most of the talk here is about if the base model will somday be 64 GB? Picture proof that it really does suck having no expansion slot or saving $100 to get the anemic 16 GB will raise more issues later. Get the 64 GB. Problem solved. Stick to the "s" cycle which lands on 2017. Another problem solved.

S stands more as special, smarter, or sense than speed or sucker to me. Because Apple will try to attract the fashionistas this year with a new design. Those soccer moms and anyone who doesn't know tech will buy it and be used as guinea pigs before Apple saves money next year recycling the same exterior like they did to the SE. Then refine whatever mistakes they might make for the iPhone 7. Analysts expect a down year for Apple before picking up again on the 2017 s year. More people are finally coming to their senses wanting the stronger twin.

The s cycle is basically what Sony did to their PlayStations with the slimmer models. Correct any mistakes with the first gen phat models like more power draw and overheating. Then refine its strengths. Say yes to s.

iPhone 7 this September, than next year the big update, and it might be called iPhone 8, dropping the "7s" model. Its possible, unless this year it will be the big update which I doubt.
