I don't know why everyone is hating on the Macbook display. The macbook is positioned as an entry level notebook for Apple. Of course it will not have the same display as the MBA or MBP as those two computers have a higher pricepoint than the macbooks.

If you look at the last gen MB as compared to the new MBs, the displays are roughly the same. The newer generation has a brighter screen.

If you want firewire and a better screen - go with the Pro. Simple as that.

Now shut up already and just enjoy your machine. If blacks aren't truly black, life still goes on.

A smaller viewing angle is also better for use on the airplane as prying eyes will have a harder time reading the documents on your screen etc. So there may be an underlying benefit afterall.

Just quit crying like little schoolgirls already. If you hate the screen, then return the product. End of story. There are many customers who have bought the new macbooks who have no complaints. For example, jon4lakers who is a tech guru on youtube loves his new 2.4 macbook and he came from a MBP. That should give everyone some perpsective.
Interesting how you're questioning how to look for such defects in one thread and telling us to stop bitching in another. How entertaining this must be.

For those saying "get the pro" really? You'd spend the additional money to watch a DVD? I'd question your sanity.

I've said it over and over again. The MB for me was not meant to do any heavy lifting. I have a pro machine sitting on my floor and it's working perfectly. If watching a DVD on a plane or just in my house is a "pro" function then I am uber pro!

It's true. People should just stop bitching and find reolutions to the problem. People like Sammy who have tried to determine the root cause of the poor display verus posters like you and MacJenn who just post complaints ad nauseum without proposing a resolution. The reason why I asked in the other thread is that I am going to be a new Mac user and I want to know everything about the product I am about to purchase.

And if I was in your position, I would not be posting and complaining about my screen every post but would be in search of a resolution. I would be at the Genius bar first thing to sort out the issue.

There is a fundamental difference between bitching/complaining and actually finding a solution when there is a problem.

You have a 9C89 display so you should be proactive and see if another machine with the 9C8C display is better than yours. If it is, then you simply exchange it. That is being proactive vs. posting 20-30 times about how the new macbook is a POS notebook computer compared to MBA and MBP screens that cost much more etc.

A lot of us don't watch movies with fluorescent lighting on. I watched Saw last night and it looked phenomenal on my 2.0 MB, so I can't say I agree with you. People on here tend to make mountains out of mole hills, just let the guy enjoy his computer. Jesus...

I'm sorry but was there a post that I personally made where I made a statement that I sit under fluorescent lighting? FWIW all bulbs in my house are GE Reveal (they adjust for that yellow hue made by incandescent lighting). I am very glad your screen is great. Short of you posting photos as I and a few others have to prove this I'll take your word for it. When the buyer's glow wears off lemme know.

I have to say this to all. This is a most amazing notebook. I've said it time and time again ... so long as I don't need to watch a movie.

Because it is the truth. Before I bought this new 2.4 crapbook, I had the 2.4 blackbook. My friend bought the new 2.0 alu Macbook before I sold my blackbook. We compared the speeds and how each one did on a number of apps. The new 2.0 didn't do nearly as well. Just like the benchmark scores indicated (they say the new 2.0 is 20% less performing than the previous 2.4 and that is what I experienced in real world test). I bought the new 2.4 alu Macbook and it isn't any faster than my previous Macbook and actually did worse on a couple of things.

Speed wise the 2.0 new one is a downgrade from the previous gen 2.4. The new 2.4 benchmark tests show a slight improvement from the last gen, but like I said I didn't see any difference.

The GMA X3100 compared to the new Nvidia chipset is a joke. On standard Quake tests your supposedly fast machine does a miserable 7.6 fps while the alumn macbook cranks out 38 fps. The new chipset alone is worth the upgrade.

And it is stupid to buy a Macbook primarily for gaming. News Flash chief, but some people actually use their computers for things other than gaming where the graphic card isn't as needed as much. What good is a good graphic card if the screen sucks anyway?

Hey "CHIEF", "BOSS" etc.

Snow Leopard will take advantage of multicore processing. This also includes the new Nvidia chipset. So the upgrade to the Alubook is justified for Snow Leopard alone not just gaming.

I guess we will see how much better it will be. I have played with my friends new 2.0 Macbook and in MY opinion it isn't worth the upgrade for ME right now. I like the new ones. I'm not degrading it, so no need to act like that. Whatever makes you feel better, guy.

Am I missing something here or are you now simply backtracking to cover your glaring oversight?

You were just finished degrading someone who pointed out that the new graphics card is substantially better than the previous gen. Then you cussed out the new screen saying it was crappy. Well compared to your blackbook, the screens aren't that much different.

The new macbooks are primed for the multicore processing abilities of Snow Leopard coming out next year so there is no harm in purchasing the new laptops if you need it now.

That was hyperbole used to drive home a point. The point being that most people watch movies with the lights off. It's wonderful that you use the GE Reveal (I do too) but as long as they are off when you're watching your movie, it's not an issue. Yes, the screen is very glossy, I don't disagree with you. But I think the quality is great, it's very bright, and it isn't difficult to get my work done. I was mostly irked by the fact that you just had to get a snarky comment in when all the guy was doing is telling people that he liked his purchase.

Agree Completely

Love my MacBook Best laptop ever:)

I've had my Macbook for about a month and I love it. I've purchased quite a few laptops, and this one has been the most enjoyable of them all. But just because you love something doesn't mean you should be oblivious to it's minor faults. The issue of slanted keys is very real for a lot of customers, and you should consider yourself lucky if you got a good keyboard. The screen is beaten by a three year old Sony machine that I purchased for half the price - and that screen isn't even LED. These slight imperfections are very real. But are they deal breakers? For some people, yes. For most people this notebook is targeted towards? Absolutely not. I can live with these small faults, as no notebook currently in existence is without it's faults.

It's great to be happy and love your notebook. It's also good to be realistic when the honeymoon period is over. The reason why most people don't take any 'review" seriously that rates something as 100% or 110% or even 5% or whatever, is that reasonable people know that there are pros and cons to all products. It's never perfect. There's always a con. The best reviews are the ones that tell you about the good as well as the bad so people can make informed purchasing decisions.

Add me to the Happy Unibody MacBook Users Group (HUMBUG). ;)

In fact, I'm selling my iMac because I hardly ever use it anymore, now that I have my MacBook.

Love my new macbook and especially with the new 7200 rpm hard drive i installed. Runs great and doesn't use up alot of battery life at the same time its still quiet.

just got mine today! 2.4 model!

loving everything! FN keys are slanted but i wouldnt have even noticed if it wasnt all hyped up on here.. im not going to do anything about it now and if anything happens it will be covered with applecare.

by far the best apple keyboard i have ever used. soft keys, study feeling, and great sounding! i am already typing a lot faster on it than my old aluminum KB.

havnt had a chance to take advantage of the backlight yet, but im excited when i have the situation!

screen is brilliant. no problems with glare.. blacks look amazing.

speedy little machine with excellent build quality! when i picked up my old macbook it creaked and cracked, and this one is sturdy.

one last thing: the box was tiny! like seriously, it looked comical next to my iMac box.

enough of my fanboy speech. I am a bit upset apple didnt put the backlit KB on the 2.0 model, or at least offered it as an upgrade.

finally, I got it at best buy. the service was horrible. i told one guy i wanted a macbook and he basically laughed at me (im guessing because of my age) another guy said he would go get me one but he never came back. a third guy also said he would go get one but i never saw him again.

later i saw the second guy aimlessly walking around far away from i where i first was looking for me.. i got it in the end finally though! :)

im so very jealous of all you macbook aluminum owners...cant wait till my first gen macbook dies so i can buy me one of those :)

A little over a month with my MacBook and I have never been happier with a computer. It is perfect for what I got it for. It does have slanted function keys but that is the only problem I have noticed and something I can easily live with. When I bought this computer i committed to it for 3 years (incidently the amount of time I have left in UG) and I've never had a laptop I felt would still be decent in that amount of time before. I fully expect to be buying a new MacBook in 3 years that I will commit to for the duration of law school.
