Some of you might have seen my unboxing video for the recently purchased 17" 2011. At one point in the same said Unboxing video I say a passing comment that if you blinked you'd miss it but it has since then adversely affected my ownership experience.

I couldn't stop thinking that I only had the 2.2 and that there was a 2.3 out there. I couldn't handle it. I kept feeling like I couldn't unleash full-OCD mode until this was complete. I can max out everything but I can never go back and switch processors.

I plan to have the max everything: MBP, iPhone, and iPad. So I didn't want the 2.2 to be a weak link of imperfection I couldn't escape from. 2011, 17 inch, 8 gigs RAM, 7200rpm 750gb hard drive (can't live with 500ish of space), 32 GB iPhone, 64GB 3G iPad.

None of that would feel the same if I knew I had a non maxed out processor in one of the trilogy items.

Literally, you can go to the customize option and there is nothing more you can add or upgrade!

Oh yeah I'm getting an iPod nano too (16 of course).

You sound like you have issues with technology that you should resolve before making any significant purchases. You may want to reexamine the role of technology in your life. If simply knowing that something out there better exists adversely affects your experience you will likely never be happy in this world. You'd be hard pressed to notice a difference between 2.3GHz and 2.2Ghz, even with a stop watch on hand. The Geekbench score for the 2.3GHz model is 3.3% higher than for the 2.2GHz model. That means that real world applications will see even less improvement.

If you really want the ultimate MBP, you have to have two 512GB SSDs in it.

But seriously. Perhaps consider your needs and uses before spending absurd amounts of money on Apple crap, unless you just have that kind of disposable income.

Did you just say TWO 512 SSDs???

I just ordered a 17", 2.2, 8gb ram, 512ssd, in my opinion that's the best configuration.

You will not notice a difference in speed going from 2.2 to 2.3 unless you're rendering large files, but you're going to get more heat, more fan noise and less battery life.

That's specifically why I didn't go with the 2.3.

Plus it's $250.00 ... more what?

Twas a jest. It is possible, but not without minor surgery.

Phew, you just gave me anxiety.

Luckily it's not a reasonable option that I obsessively feel I would be forced to pursue to feel "maxed out" with the "ultimate" Mac setup.

And with sandy bridge a Mac Pro is straight up redundant so I'm not even gonna go down that road.

All that's left is to decide if I need the old 30" cinema display, the new 27" one, or some Dell/HP 30" display.

I do process large files and I use Logic AND Final Cut a lot actually. Also I play games.

I like the way you think though... Judging by your sig.

Heat is heat, it's already gonna get hot. Noise is still silent for all intents and purposes and battery life is in the seconds or minutes.

But the peace of mind knowing your maxed out and the right to tell your friends that and impress girls? Priceless.

(and maybe a lil file processing/installation speed boost here and there)

...? So why are you not getting a 512GB SSD in your computer if you truly want the maxed out model? And 16GB of RAM?

Please be joking

I can understand the OP feelings about having the top of the line model. For me I can let this slide a little bit on the technology side, knowing that I'm replacing a 4 year old computer that work can do everything I need it to albeit slower, but for cars this rule absolutely applies. How can you buy a 6-cylinder mustang when there is a Cobra out there somewhere? Of course there are limitations to this practice (namely $$$) but it's a general rule of thumb for me.

Do you buy a new maxed out model whenever there is a bump in processor speed? How can this end when you consider that tech stuff is changing/upgrading constantly? I'm genuinely curious.

I may be wrong, but wouldn't the 2.2 with an SSD be faster than the 2.3 with a spinning HD?

512 is not comfortably large enough to install ableton live with all the sounds, logic with all the sounds, final cut with everything, photoshop, illustrator, years of music and music videos, world of Warcraft, plus a whole other side of Windows 7 via Boot Camp running FL Studio, Pro Tools, and Reason. On top of that there would be vsts for both sides of the fence that are tens and hundreds of gigs. There even more in the form of sound banks which I will transfer to a newer Thunder hard drive for fast sample access. So yeah, 512 isn't enough. Even 750 is pushing it.

But did you just say 16 Gigs of RAM!!!????

Only if you want to drop $1600 on it.

If he drops thousands on maxed out Apple gear I doubt 1600 bucks is going to deter him. Haha, go for it!

... so this is why you told me to get the 2.0!

... so that your 2.3 would mean that much more!

... i get your little game now! ;)

... what if Apple offered ONLY YOU a custom built 2.30001GHz???!!!

... and all you had to do to get it was drown one tiny, little puppy?

seriously though, this post put a little sadness in my sadh:(le.

i hope you find what you're looking for.

... and that you'll find it in your heart to spare the puppy.

I on the other hand like having an old G4 around the house. My eMac has the best ever speakers and is the living room iTunes machine. It even ran Logic 7 until the firewire port burned out. :p
