Are they really going to do this with the iPad line again? Releasing two separate products under the exact same product category within months of each other is just a big middle finger to the customer

What on earth are you talking about?

Apple is going to have to innovate in this space soon. The corporate world is moving past tablets and what I am seeing is more and more people looking towards Surface Pro 3 type devices. Mobile and desktop are converging and this is where the growth will be. People don't want a tablet AND a laptop. They want one device that does both, especially if their computing needs are on the lighter end of the spectrum which is probably where 75% of people are.

My employer is moving our execs and mobile folks towards the Lenovo Tablet 10s and away from their iPads. I'm seeing it in other businesses as well. Someone is going to have to make the iOS world and OSX world play nice, and soon. The writing is on the wall.

Sales numbers to back up your hypothesis? Cuz the previous Surface tanked.

Another thing.

A9 must have at least Triple Core CPU, 2 GBs of memory, and better GPU than it is in A8X.

iPhone 6S will be a beast ;).

The iPad 3 and 4 situation.

Which isn't this. The latest ipad update in October. A rumored new size in summer, or a true update to the mini, which really wasn't updated, has nothing to do with that. All the iPads sold previously won't stop working.

I swear the kids on here work hard to find things to be enraged about. Pathetic.

It works in conjunction with apple maps so you don't get anywhere before your supposed to. Or is that you get to a place your not meant to be at a time your not meant to be there. Its all so confusing but really you don't have to worry because you don't know where your going and you don't have to be there anytime soon because you've already been. Apple...

Apple Maps has worked fine for me. But that could be because I know how to use it.

Let me guess... Another row of icons?

I agree. The sad part of it all is that the added screen space wouldn't yield us anything other than an added row of icons, or as the iPhone 6+ has shown, a blown up and pixelated UX.

I know the Devs will have to play catch up, but I'm crossing my fingers for a real workhorse tablet, one that may even trump the Surface Pro 3 which runs a full OS.

The iPad Pro won't run OS X, but it'd be nice to see some real advancements on the iOS side in terms of functionality.

I am not sure I get the use niche for this? At 12", I think the size will be definitely too big to hold in one hand; and maybe even too big to be using both hands for extended periods. If one has to prop this up every now and then, why not just get a MBA? The only possible reason I can think of is that Apple has figured that customers want iOS on larger machines and they do not want to load a touch centric OS on a traditional keyboard/ pointer machine.

How many companies did you survey? I am not seeing that in mine.

So may opinions here stated as facts...

I don't see the value in this unless it is designed with a proper Wacom-style stylus for graphic designers and as a challenge to the art use of Windows tablets already sporting such screens (and challenging Wacom's own Cintique line of display+drawing tablet, and Windows/Android tablets).

If it's just a larger screen, I'm not interested. It's too big for what I want to do on an iPad (replace my iPhone 4 for Internet and reading use).

If it sports a legit professional Wacom stylus and digitizer, then I WILL feel a bit miffed when it comes out if I buy an iPad Air 2 this year.

Did you see the value of the original iPod, iPhone and iPad?

...and flatter than flat, maybe dropping all interface color too. ;)

But imagine how "thin" it will be! Please Apple, make it "thinner". Kick the battery out so we have to buy a separate battery case if necessary. Dump the camera if it gets in the way. Shift all the guts you can out of the thing so you can give us "thinner". Don't worry, we'll pay full price anyway and then spin to each other why your choices in support of "thinner"- even if they end up costing us more money- makes perfect sense.

I agree thinness is important, but certainly there will be an internal battery. But it will be made from kittens, because that's what kind of company Apple has become. They're willing to sacrifice kittens just to serve their obsession with earning as many :rolleyes: as possible! Makes perfect sense.

prediction:

full blown OSX

makes 0% to just release a bigger ipad.

Since there is an almost 0% apple will give you a keyboard, i'll go with full osx.

it gives them the opportunity to continue marketing macbook air/pro.

Remember the 3rd gen iPad (the first one with retina display) being released on March 16, 2012 and then discontinued on October 23 in the same year? Sure that made a lot of customers angry, but it's still better to realize a fault and set it right than sticking to a legacy product (or legacy technology in that particular product) just to not upset some customers who bought it.

Sure. And I've still got that iPad 3. And the retina screen still looked great until last week when the GF tripped on the stairs and dropped it. Now it is dinged up a bit on the edges.

Sometimes things advance quickly. I never regretted my iPad 3 purchase. It got largely replaced by the Mini (and the GF adopted it until its fateful fall). But it was a good device.

I may get an Air 2. And if I don't, I will certainly buy the Air 3 next year. The iPad is just too useful for me to not have one. The Mini is great for its portability, but the screen is just a bit too small for documents. Ideally I'd have an full sized iPad that I carry when I've got my briefcase with me, and then the Mini for when I've just got a coat. That would be nice, though obviously a bit of substantially outlay from the wallet. That is why I'm spacing them out so that there is also some advancements in processor and other features. The Air 2 might be a little too close to my Mini in terms of performance. Though maybe that extra ram makes a big difference and I'm unnecessarily denying myself better available performance.

The iPad 3 and 4 situation.

That was a situation? The iPad 4 was the first one that I skipped, but it wasn't because I was angry or hurt. It just didn't offer much that was new. Mainly just the lightning connector, and the 128 GB option (but that wasn't until several months later). I saw it as move by Apple to get the iPad releases on a fall schedule, like the iPhones, and that gave me another six months to enjoy my third generation iPad before the iPad Air was released.

If Apple releases a new model before I'm ready to buy, I just don't buy. I don't take it as a personal attack.

Excellent news for artists

I would like some more screen estate for the following.

music - heaps of apps sometimes have small trigger points.

drawing - a large tablet that is portable with that new bluetooth pressure
sensitive wacom addition might prevent me wanting to get a cintiq

reading - larger is better for me as I get older.

games - some cloud the screen with your fingers unless you use another bluetooth device.

It sounds good to me and long overdue from a creative perspective.

The iPad 4 didn't get a 128 GB option until January (ie, three months after its launch). At launch the main feature was an A6X instead of an A5X which brought it in line with iPhones in regard to to processor options. The second feature was the Lightning connector.

So, it was both designed to bring the release cycle to a fall launch and to bring it in line with the iPhones in regard to processors (where one required or caused the other).

The "iPad Pro" or "iPad Air Plus" as Mac Fan calls it, is said to include a new A9 processor

I very much doubt it will get the A9 processor before the iPhone 6s.

By moving the iPhone upgrade from June to Sept and at the same time insisting the iPhone has the latest processor first, Apple have effectively limited their upgrade cycle options for the iPad. Updating the iPad just a few weeks after the iPhone every year was a bad idea and many people said so at the time. I suspect that is partly why iPad sales are floundering.

Push the iPhone updates back to June or July and that gives them time to sort out supply/demand before the next big upgrade of the iPad in Sept. That has the added benefit of leaving people with a sufficient gap to save up for the iPad after their iPhone purchase.
