I held off last spring in hopes of getting a mini-led screen and A14X iPad Pro, but these oled rumors are troublesome. My iPhone 12 screen is so beautiful, I’d hate to purchase now and oled come out in the fall.
The “one” rumor about OLED coming to iPads was from an unreliable source, and either way it said it would be coming next year. That might mean that you’re waiting another 18 months, because it probably wouldn’t come until the fall of next year.
If you want an iPad, get the one that’s coming out this year. You can wait forever, becaus no matter what and when you purchase, there’s always gonna be something better eventually.

The iPad that’s released in 2022 is going to be better than the one released in 2021. That’s just a given.
And the one released in 2023 will be better than that.

Right, I get that. However for me it’s sort of like the series 4 watch. I waited for the redesign with the thinner body and larger screen because those were features worth upgrading for. I haven’t been tempted to upgrade since.

Having the best possible screen is just the biggest priority for my next iPad purchase.

If you need/want a MacBook, strongly consider the Air. It is a great system and the battery life is fantastic. I use it for several hours every day and charge only once or twice a week. And the M1 processor is fast. My $999 base (8GB, 256GB SSD) MB Air is faster than my 2019 16" MBP (32 GB, 1 TB SSD) was at most basic tasks like browsing, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.
Yeah, I’m guessing I’ll end up ordering the MBA. It’s not like my iPad Pro doesn’t still work (and remain fast), but battery life just doesn’t cut it, which is going to be problematic when I start traveling again (a lot). I’ve been using my iPP as my primary device for the past year, but have my rMBP right next to it and typically move between them just for the added screen real estate, and would retire the rMBP if I do end up with the MBA.

I used to own an Air, back from 2011 when they did the first update to it - it was the first Mac that I LOVED. It was so fast, and light, compared to previous HDD driven MBP’s, iMacs and even the G5 tower I had previously. It actually lived a second life with one of my kids at college and would have kept working had it not gotten crushed by a bed frame falling on it.

If I had to guess, the mini-LED screen is going to be fantastic and a worthy alternative to OLED. It’s not like the existing LED screen on the iPad Pro’s are bad (I never think it looks inferior compared to my 12 Pro Max OLED screen). Apple wouldn’t be making the switch to mini and at some point micro LED if they thought OLED was the best option.

Sounds like you’re looking for the 16 inch MacBook Pro.
Or the upcoming 24 and 32 inch iMacs
I already have an iMac and 16” MBP. I will upgrade both when the new designs come out. Ideally I would like a 15” iPad but a bigger 12.9” version would do for now. I use the iPad and Macs for very different things. Mostly I use the iPad for reading newspapers and magazines, watching internet news channels in the background while I’m working, etc. A bigger screen would mean less zooming in and out to read the content. Maybe I’m not a typical user but I would still pay extra for a bigger iPad.

The new Air is much better than the old ones. Besides speed, my favorite feature is no fan. Makes about as much noise as an iPad, unless you are typing;).

Why not transition directly to OLED? Making consumers waste time and money on a product that will soon be OUTDATED...
Welcome to tech everything is outdated in the end..products don’t stop being great just because something new comes out.

like saying don’t buy the iPhone 12 as the next one is out in a year.

I use my iPad Pro mostly for note taking with Notability app. Does Mini-LED give any noticeable benefit for this purpose?
None of us has actually seen the screen yet. There are some TVs that use mini-led. The Samsung QLED 80 and 90. I've looked at them in stores. Of course, stores are not the best place to really evaluate screen quality and the settings are often cranked up to jump out at you. My take is that they are somewhere between regular LED and and OLED in terms of image quality. Several reviews I've read comparing TVs seem to reach that same conclusion. I think the current screens on the Air and IPad Pros are really excellent. My guess is that you'll have to do some pretty close comparisons to see a meaningful difference. We'll see when they hit the street.

As I type this on my iPhone, My iPad Air 2 stares at me from across the kitchen island. It has no idea how much I’m looking forward to replacing it with the iPad Pro.

Soon, it will be passed down to my children where it will spend its waking moments playing “Henry Danger” and “A Series of Unfortunate Events” on a constant loop.

It is oblivious to its fate. And I am giddy with anticipation.
Respectfully, I am curious why you are wanting to upgrade from your iPad Air 2 to an iPad Pro?

Obviously niche, but I’d have preferred iPadOS to have been limited to the pros. At least it’s diverging (extremely slowly mind) from iOS, but as long as the standard ‘entry’ iPad runs iPadOS, it’s still going to held back in some ways 😒
I would like to see an exclusive ‘Pro Mode’ in the settings, so people that want a simple tablet as the iPad originated can still have that - while ‘Pro Mode’ would add a number of professional features for those that want, or require. Could even be automatic when connected to the Magic Keyboard. Then everyone would be happy.

Personally I hope the new iPad Pro has tele lens added. I know most users, don’t care about the cameras, but I do use mine for shooting concert videos and a tele lens would be a useful addition.

If mini LED is brighter, that will also be a big benefit for me, as I often use my iPad Pro playing music outside in the sun.

Why not just OLED and be done with it. Not like Apple has ever been concerned with saving us money...
OLED is pretty old tech made in only a couple of factories and likely to be out paced by HDR LCD for large screens and mini LED on smaller screens like tablets and phones... Apple going to OLED at this stage is nonsense, don't believe the rumours...

...yea, no. We will have an OLED iPad within 12 to 18 months and everyone will be bitching about having bought these...

Does OLED still have the burn-in problem? If so, I bet people would be pissed if they start seeing the fuel gauge and date and time burned into the top of their iPad screens.
