Secondly I would like to point something else out too. I don’t tend to close my applications so they stay open in background, I have a 12 pro max which is really amazing at everything!

I have noticed some things:

1) that after some time of having apple original apps open in the background (settings especially, mail, weather, calculator ecc...) and let’s say I’m using Instagram ..when I swipe up to access the apps in background , I notice that the apple original apps mentioned above turn either fully black or white (depending on whether you have dark mode activated or not

2) when I have many apps open , regardless of what apps but many, if I go to safari and turn the device to put into horizontal/landscape mode (or any other app that supports landscape mode) and swipe up to access the apps open in the background again, some apps in the background go fully black or white, some display the app logo and some stay open as they should.. however when I turn the phone vertical and swipe up again all the apps stay open in the background as they should .. perhaps the apps struggle to show the same previews in landscape mode when initially opened in vertical mode

Also if you change the system from dark mode to light mode or viceversa, some apps in the background act as I described in the points above

anyone can relate?
This is because the apps aren’t actually running in the background. iOS has strict rules on how apps behave once closed. They get frozen after a few seconds. What you are seeing in the previews are basically screenshots of the app at the time it was closed.

I’ve just talked to Apple Support describing this issue for my iPhone 12 Pro under iOS 14.4 and the operator confirmed Apple developers are working on it. It means there’s awareness and willingness to solve... I wanna be optimistic!
Just like they are working on raised blacks since November..

I said this a while ago. Very odd.
Apparently The same reason they didn’t report on the messages keyboard typing delay that EVERYONE I knew with an iPhone had a couple months back. Thankfully it got fixed but it took a few months.

Boy I can’t wait for iOS 15! It’ll fix these bugs and introduce some new ones , CANT WAIT!😒

I am installing 14.5 beta right now. (and Watch 7.4 beta)

In 14.4 beta I was able to hammer it enough to reproduce it in an hour or two. I will give 14.5 the same treatment. Wish me luck!

Will report back.
Thanks - let us know. I'm not holding my breath. Remember it takes a while after a reboot before it starts up again.

First hour very promising -- no signs of stutter. Will continue to hammer.

Worth mentioning: TickTick does not work on this build. Crashes when trying to open. That's the only app I've had an issue with so far.

Also worth mentioning - I'm noticing some apps closing a little more frequently in the background than usual. Trying to hammer this and apps that normally would have survived are being killed in memory at some point. Could very well be related to our stutter (in a good way). I'll take more aggressive killing of apps over the stutter any day.

Edit: Just felt the beginning of a stutter. This is usually how it starts. This might be a bust.

Edit 2: My experience so far--

They have definitely made some changes in memory collection aggression. For what it's worth if I just go spam opening apps, I've been able to reproduce some stutter when swiping home (it's sadly definitely still here); however, it has not been enough to interrupt and cancel the home animation and take me to multitasking view. They might have lowered the threshold to enter that view. Continuing to test.

I’m finding that the stuttering seems to be far less in dark mode.. when scrolling through the settings app in dark mode it’s a lot more fluid than in light mode, the same in some apps as well.. this is probably why my partner and my son haven’t noticed it on their devices.. but when I put them into light mode they definitely stutter, they both have iphone 11’s.. both my ipad Pro 2020 and my 12 pro max (purchased in the first week of Jan) have worse stuttering in light mode.. could this be why some people don’t notice it? Or maybe it’s just more noticeable in light mode..

I don’t think people in this thread are really talking about stutter when scrolling, it’s more when closing an app. Possibly could be related, but personally I haven’t had any problems with scrolling.

I still have not had the swipe up animation broken yet on 14.5. Even trying to force it.

It’s only been 8 hours so far but prior updates I’ve been easily able to reproduce it by now.

There is still a random stutter though, and that sucks.

edit: whelp. I jinxed it. Still busted piece of ****. What a frustrating mess. Animation still broken.

Thanks for the update! This was me after every iOS 13 update. ;) For me, it started as soon as I got my 11 Pro max last in fall of 2019.

I’ve noticed this too, when night mode kicks in its much smoother. Why this is who knows but it’s very odd.

I’ve always been on dark mode. I did try normal mode, no starter. My phone is immune I guess.

Im guessing no one tried replicating my apps on their phone to see if stutter would go away.

Don't know if its only the 12 pro or if the 12 also has this issue, but personally I've had no stutter.

Guys this is so messed up and I can’t believe Apple hasn’t fixed it yet but I am 100% certain it is a software issue and that there’s multiple triggers for the lag. As previously said, WhatsApp for me is one of them - on my device I was able to verify that with 100% certainty; the Reddit app also seems to cause it and even the App Store does, but both far less intensively.

However, I noticed that when I pick a dynamic wallpaper (not „live“ where you need to hold your finger on the Lock Screen to animate it but the ones that are always animated) the same issue appears regardless oh what app is opened in the background. Worse than that, this seems to cause the issue permanently as long as the wallpaper is set and not only sometimes. I noticed that there is a delay when swiping into the multitasking view *every single time* and even opening app folders is having a big delay.

iOS has really become a huge mess lately, I think we do need Jony Ive back 🤷🏼‍♂️
