Yes, phones these days will not overcharge and damage the battery if left plugged in. I think the vast majority of smartphone users use their phone during the day, and charge overnight anyways.

I have used a 12w iPad charger to charge my iPhone 6 (4.7") since early 2015 after discovering this thread. No problems whatsoever. It will charge at a rate of almost 50% per hour until it hits ~90% and then it slows to a "trickle" charging rate that is slower. I have been very pleased.
