I just created an account so I could say the photo in this article made me do a double take while scrolling, as I thought it was Raphael the Ninja Turtle.

They can’t let go of this box just like they couldn’t let go of the old iPhone 6 design.

This thing is probably going to be really expensive. But if they wanna keep the pro name ideally this should be:

$1599

14 inch MBP style chassis with:

M3
16 GB RAM --> max 32
512 GB SSD --> max 4TB

60Hz 13 inch mini LED display

Thankfully you're not Apple 😊
I think Apple will rebrand the MacBook Air to MacBook regardless because most laptops are already very thin. But from a pure specs point of view, the entry MacBook Pro has no reason to exist. I know a very small minority of people like the Touch Bar, but if apple listened to what everyone want, Macs would still have Flash and OpenDoc

Long live the Touch Bar. I have the M1 MBP and it does about everything I need from a modern Mac laptop. I am not even bothered by the 2 USB C ports it has. Rarely do I connect any external devices although I did have an external monitor connected for a while, but got tired. I just use it primarily as a laptop. Apple must have spit it out quite a number of the Touchbar chassis for M1 expecting to be a lot of purchases so they are trying to deplete over different generations Apple Silicon. Maybe by M4 it will finally be phased out. Its even more validation for my M1.

The M1/M2 Pro, and M1 MacBook Air look much better than the current ugly notch Mac's. I wish the 16" M2 looked like my 2019 MacBook Pro 16". The chips may have got better, but Apple's design team seem to have become blind.
Have you actually used one? The notched space with the camera allows the menubar to move up the take up what was the large bezel, and since the middle of the menubar is dead space anyway in the UI you lose nothing and gain a nice chunk of screen real estate when normally working.

When you full screen an app the menubar space fades to black, the notch isnt super visible, and you’ve lost no space relative to the previous gen.

It’s a pretty nice design that gives me a bit more work area, try it before you knock it

Like the Mac mini and 9th-generation iPad, it's likely that this form factor is here to stay due to it being a popular choice for institutional purchases. I suspect that this model will go the same way as the Mac mini, which hasn't had a significant design change (in terms of dimensions and general form factor) since 2010.

An alternative explanation is that Apple wants to keep the Touch Bar around in some form because they have plans to revive it.

Using M2 MBP and what I only miss is the 120hz display from my iPad Pro 11" and bit thinner bezel without any notch.

Touchbar is a nice addon because I don't like the shortcuts (search, microphone, no disturb) of Apples current MacBook and external Keyboard.

Also I like the M2 non-pro CPU because I don't need this power and have instead a longer runtime on battery, which is really great on M2 MBP.

I’m a profesional developer working on machine learning, I never had an issue with the 2016 MacBook Pro it was an amazing machine beautifully designed, Touch Bar was cool but never lived to what could have been. I have been to
Apple stores at least 3 times trying to buy the new design, it was impossible. Ugly form factor, thicker, fatter, notch ridden, cheap looking keyboard and worst of all, with legacy ports that I never ever missed. For me it is impossible to buy a new machine with a hdmi port (wtf!) or a sd card slot (wtf!x10000) what the **** this guys are thinking, those technologies were done 20 years ago, anyone that “needs” them is an old dino. Sorry Apple I can’t buy your old tech, I guess you are going to put back usb ports and diskettes because someone out there “needs” them, but that’s not me. I’m staying with my machine which has an amazing design and has performed perfectly at profesional level since 2017.

I don’t know where to begin with this so I will just say HDMI and SD are far from dead.

Not from my experience, the 2016 line up is the worst I have ever seen from keyboard to battery. Touch Bar is okay to me.

I'm with Jason Snell that this model sells mostly to corporate / enterprise customers* who need an "inexpensive" laptop and therefore Apple keeps it as a MacBook Pro because IT shops mostly buy MacBook Pro models (of all sizes). So Apple is very likely shifting a fair number of them at fairly nice margins so they have no reason to drop it or rename it.

* - I would sales to consumers and prosumers are in the single-digits as they are buying MacBook Airs or the 14"/16" MacBook Pros.
They must have an extraordinary amount of spare parts for this thing laying around, or the existing assembly lines to create this must be dirt cheap at this point.

Talk about milking it for all its worth!

There is no other reason for this 7 year old machine to still exist.

This - I had the 2015 and the 2016/2017...the battery on the 2015 was still operating far longer than the 2016.

The design may be old, but it looks wayyyy better than the current MacBook Pros. The only thing the 13 inch model "needs" is a bezel reduction.
But it doesn't look any better than the MacBook Air, which is superior to this machine and thinner/lighter....so that is the head scratcher.

There is some legacy reason that is still making Apple money somehow for this to exist. Selling just enough to government or corporate entities from various corners of the planet.

I’d assume it’s to give people a reasonably priced MacBook with a fan…

A 13” 16/512 model for $1400 with an updated chassis would be nice. 2K starting price for the 14” is out of range for a lot of people.
I suggest everyone look at Apple's refurbished site. You can get a sweet deal on M1 MacBook Pros and Apple refurbished have the same warranty and return policy like buying it brand new.

how is it an outdated design? it's better than any other non-mac alternative
