In my company we have more than 500 developers and I can only think of a few that would need a SD slot. That tells you that the laptop doesn’t need a sd card reader as a standard, it should be an option, as you can buy accesories for architects, scientists, etc.

Yeah like I say nice to have but if I had the choice I would rather it be an Ethernet port. I hope nobody would argue that Ethernet is outdated.

There's already a MacBook under $1000.

The 13" MBA M1 is $999 or $899 at Apple's education store, and it often goes on sale for $799 at Amazon, Best Buy, and other places.

That's just for on sale, and the M1 model isn't gonna last forever. That's why I'm thinking after it's gone, they take the wedge design and turn it into a Macbook SE. A lot of first time Mac users coming from PC love the wedge design so it would really win a lot of people over to have an M3 Macbook SE for $800 MSRP

Even at $799, you're not going to get those $500 and under buyers. Not when they can pick up a 16" laptop for $450 with

  • 16" 1920x1200 WVA IPS Touchscreen
  • AMD Ryzen 5 5625U 6C/12T 2.3 GHz Processor
  • AMD Vega 7 Graphics
  • 8GB (1x8GB) DDR4 3200 MHz Memory
  • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive

and for about $25 more, you can upgrade it to 16GB memory.

That's not a laptop. That's a landmine. Take it from a PC Gamer like me, any laptop that's $500 is purposely designed bad so after a year or two the cooling gives out so you have to buy a new cheap laptop constantly.

I had one of those laptops during my Freshman and Sophmore year in college. The fan died after a year that I had to use a cooling pad under it just to get it to boot. I had to get an MSI Apache Pro shortly after just so I could have a laptop that wouldn't die on me.

Of course now I switched to Mac for my laptop and I'm gonna be picking fruit computers for my laptops in the future. With Apple Silicon, unless you're a PC gamer who wants something for LAN parties, there's no reason to buy anything other than a Macbook now.

The 14 inch doesn't have a Touch Bar and as far as specking it out, the same can be said for the air.
Whilst the Touch Bar maybe pointless to you and the fan, it isn't to everybody!
What it does need is a price of no more than $1450 for 16gb Ram with 512gb memory and it will fly off the shelves

So we just gonna ignore the better display on the 14 inch? The 13 inch is 1080p60 LED with IPS backlight, while the 14 inch is 1440p120 with MiniLED. That is a very noticable difference for the most important factor of a laptop, all just to have a touchbar.

Ohh ok. So I guess you enjoy working from home, which warrants the need to remove ports that other folks actually have some use of. Good on you. Sales number clearly wont line up with your opinion for sure.
It started strong because of the change from intel to Apple silicon and because many people were waiting long to change their laptops. Now sales have decreased, besides if Apple is planning a new model for the 13” it’s because there is a demand that is not satisfied with the current MBP, otherwise they would have axed it.

Okay stop. How the hell is HDMI 2.1 "outdated?" It can output to 4k144hz. Are you gonna call Magsafe outdated too?

'Okay stop'. A port on the side of the computer that serves a single function and most people will use very infrequently is an outdated concept. I'd much rather have multiple thunderbolt ports that can deliver 40Gb/s and be used to drive a display or do any number of other things including being daisy chained and connecting multiple devices at the same time. And the latest M2 machines have HDMI 2.1, but the M1 Pro/Max models are HDMI 2.0

Okay cool you're one of the few people who liked the touch bar, good for you. However for most it was a nuance and only increased the cognitive load. If I had to choose between a touch bar or a fullsized keyboard with a fullsized function key row, I'd take the latter, and good lord the function keys on the 14 inch feel so good to press on.

Maybe read a few of the other commentators on here, seems quite a few people like/miss the Touch Bar.

If you're using Photoshop or Final Cut the Touch Bar is great. For touch typists like me, it's a liability.

You know you can use the touch bar in Sidecar Mode on an iPad right?

You must be a bad typist. I use my laptop for coding and am typing on it literally all day long. Never had a problem.

Okay stop. Thinness in professional laptops is a bad idea. The thinner you get, the harder it is to cool. The 14 inch is thicker so there's more airflow so the thing doesn't thermal throttle like the old 15 inches with the butterfly keyboard did.

'Okay stop.' The 14 inch MacBook Pro is actually thinner than the 13" Pro model, maybe do your research before posting. The 13 just looks thinner because the edges taper. (13" is 1.56cm and 14" is 1.55cm)

The 13 inch can get away with being thin since it's not really a professional laptop. It's a daily driver wearing the pro name instead of being called The Macbook since putting Pro at the end sells more units. But the only "pro" thing about it is the fact it has a heatsink. That's it. Otherwise you're just using a standard M2.

Depends what you mean by 'pro'. If a pro machine is a machine that is designed to be used by professionals then there are many people using the 13" MacBook Pro professionally (including me), and many companies that still provide it to their employees.

If by 'pro' you mean that it's got to be the fastest machine Apple offers, then surely the only 'pro' machines are the laptops equipped with M2 Max chips? Maybe Apple should remove all the markings on their devices and instead just have the model nomenclature displayed in the 'About this Mac'? Then to please people like you, they could remove the pro word from the shiny Mac you purchased last year when they release a newer model?

Oh great you're one of them. CAN WE STOP WITH THIS?! For gods sake I thought we were done with the "notch bad" crap with the iPhone X but nooooo. Two years now and people like you are still complaining WHEN THE NOTCH ISN'T EVEN NOTICABLE WHEN ITS ABOVE YOUR CONTENT SO YOU'RE NOT EVEN LOOKING AT IT.

God I'm tired of this. If you want a better webcam and thinner bezels, a notch is necessary.

Yes, I'm one of them. The notch is a compromise, plain and simple. Whilst many people appear happy with the tradeoff, there are also people like me who still want their laptops to look good. I totally accept that there are also people out there that think the notch looks great, so to them the new design is a win. I would like a better webcam, but I also don't mind the top bezel on the 13", in fact I don't see why the entire top assembly has to be edge to edge display, I think it looks a bit tacky and unfortunately its what all the cheap laptops from China do, like the Xiaomi Book Air 13, that has a 13" OLED display, even they managed to squeeze an 8MP camera into the tiny bezel (come on Apple!).

If they went with a pill design and brought the dynamic island to the Mac would that make you happy?

No, still a compromise.

...that is the most stupidest thing to complain about. It's bloody IO ports. Do you complain about that with every other laptop or just the Macbook Pro?

Nah this is a dumb nitpick. The black background of the keyboard makes the backlight popout more and highlights how massive the keyboard is now, showing people "hey you like fullsized desktop keyboards? Now the Macbook Pro has it so you can take that form factor you like anywhere you go!"

'now'? Except its the same size keyboard as the 13" M1/M2 model, its just got function keys rather than a Touch Bar.

They were thinking "what do people want in a pro laptop?" Did you forget how terrible the butterlfy era Macbook Pros were? So thin they thermal throttled. No legacy IO that professionals still used. So they took the big requests people wanted in their Macs to make the 14/16 inch to win them back, and it worked. The 14 inch has sold like crazy ever since it came out. So many people who never used a Mac before got one (including me) and it's been the best laptop they ever used. If they stuck with the outdated touch bar design, we would not be in the Mac Renaissance we're in now.

I'll agree with you about the butterfly keyboard, it was not a great design. Although I'm interested that you detest the 13" MacBook Pro so much but have actually never had one, and in fact the 14" is your first Mac, welcome to the club and its no wonder you say its best laptop you've ever used if its your first Mac!

Good for her. Everyone has personal preference. The majority hated the touch bar design that's why it was removed.

Shame you never tried it, maybe then your objections would have some validity! But enjoy your MacBook Pro 14", it's still a great laptop and much better than anything that isn't running Mac OS.

That both machines measure almost the same proves that de 2016 model is better since people think that it’s thinner even though it’s not. That’s why good design matters.

As popular as the 13” model is, it should probably be dropped. Touch Bar should live on via a seperate keyboard for those who are that way inclined.
The MacBook Air should be rebranded to MacBook and the Pros should actually be pro devices.

So you must have never realised how you can use your wifi network at home in the first place. Spoiler, an Ethernet cable is routed to your home for your High speed wifi network.

Otherwise they’d axed it? They had the best chance to axe it on apple Silicon release but they didn’t, just like they could’ve limit macOS app install to Mac App Store only on Big Sur but they didn’t Do so. And I don’t think there’s any demand for that 13” unless there are more than 2 USB-C ports.

I think you may have been confused by the phrasing. I don’t think Ethernet is outdated. I hope no one would say it shouldn't be on a laptop just because it's an old port.

I know at least 3 people that had bought the 13” mbp over the 14”.

if they had an option to make the function keys on the new 14" half height and put a touch bar on top I'd actually kind of want that.
When the touchbar introduced the option to have F keys as default the issue was closed. But Apple couldn’t recognize that since they are not a product company anymore, they wanted to “satisfy” their clients, forgetting how many times Steve dumped technologies that were done because he knew that in the tech world you have to push forward.

Give us another USB C/Thunderbolt port then for our adapters!

Personally, if I were Apple I'd drop the 13 inch MacBook Pro and drop the "air" from MacBook Air. It would clean up the lineup and branding I think.
13” Air = Macbook 13” Mini
15” Air = Macbook 15” SE
13” Pro = Macbook 13” Gimpi SE
14” Pro = Macbook 14”
16” Pro = Macbook 16” Pro Max XS

The reason the latest Macbooks "only" have three USB-C ports is that there is not enough bandwidth left for a 4th port. There is not a single laptop on the entire market that has four Thunderbolt 4 ports that can run at full speed simultaneously, and isn't also impaired by one of these ports being used for charging (whereas on the Macs the ports are actually free due to Magsafe).

Even with 4 port Intel Macbooks two ports share the bandwidth. The current Macbooks have a 50% higher combined throughput than the Intel ones before, the total is now 3x40Gbps instead of the previous 2x40Gbps.

I have a small bus-powered USB-C adapter that turns a single USB-C port into 4 ports, each limited to 10Gbps (USB 3.1 Gen2), I think it uses this chipset: https://www.via-labs.com/product_show.php?id=99

That gives me plenty additional ports for lower-bandwidth devices and still leaves two full speed ports free. If that isn't enough you can get yet another one of these adapters to turn 2 ports into 8 - still leaving you with two display outputs, and if you want you can get even more ports and yet another display output through a Thunderbolt dock.

The amount of I/O we have on the current Macbooks is honestly quite insane and on par with desktop workstations in similar price ranges. For example I found the expensive ASUS ProArt Z790 that offers a "massive" 2 Thunderbolt ports with no mention anywhere even in the full user manual that these aren't combined 40Gbps on a single controller. In fact, the website say "up to 40Gbps" so these two ports likely share the bandwidth.

There is a reason why the Mac Studio with the M1 Max has 2xTB and 2xUSB instead of 4xTB like the Ultra. The USB-C ports are there, but they are limited to 10Gbps on the M1 Max. Why? Not enough bandwidth.
