Is that the problem faced by MOST Air customers? You can't point to the exception and call it the rule. An Air is designed for the lowest common denominator customer, not people running Matlab.

The MacBook Air is a computer mostly used by students. Just check what type of computers people use in college, even on the more technical universities (there is one close where I live and i see many students their using MacBook Airs). And they will be likely using software like Matlab.

Regular people use PC's mostly in general (atleast that is what I notice), rather than a MacBook Air.

I can't believe you are dying on this hill, but here we are ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So people hate the touchbar they can eventually ignore and use like normal keys

BUT

Accept the notch they can’t remove, ignore or hide and has no extra functionality.

Oh, yes! We live in an incredible world.

I agree with the M2 Chip part. It doesn’t make sense why they put it into it but I think they offered this machine for people who prefer the Touch Bar and no notch, maybe?
Exactly

I prefer the Touch Bar that has some use rather than the notch that has none.

The notch is a walk around for a level of development not yet reached.

Do yourself a favor and get this on sale for $1800 instead. Literally an extra $100 gets you a better machine in ever way.

Thanks for posting this. I was going to get the M2 MBP 13, but by the time I was done adding RAM and SSD, it's just a skip away from this upgrade. And with some points in my credit card, the price came down quite nicely. Receiving mine by the 28th.

I totally agree with you! That is the only logical explanation to me.
The more logical explanations are
1. They ordered a billion touchbars from the manufacturer because they thought it was going to be the future of all their computers... and now they have a ton of touchbars leftover that they don't want to throw out.
2. The supply chain for this model is different than the one for the 14 and 16 inch models, which is having serious constraints. By still producing this model they keep product flowing.

My guess is that people who are upset about this upgrade want a lower cost path to the same design in the 14”/16” Pros. It’s disappointing to wait for a new release and have it be something widely different from what you wanted. But I prefer this design since I like the touchbar and don’t like the notch. To each his own.

Even if we take your statement as true that most Airs are used by students (highly unlikely given the broad appeal of the Air) how certain are you that the students studying English, History, Business, Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Biology, Law, Socilogy, Phycology, or other subjects are using Matlab on a regular basis? We must be careful when judging the world around us by our own experience.

Whlie the notch itself adds little functionality, it is associated with the screen extensions that open up space in the bezels to move the menu bar further up, creating a larger screen and freeing space below for the app’s content area. Surely that additional screen space has some value on a laptop?

It's for the corporate market. I know where I work they still buy these for employees. The new pros are too expensive and the airs are not considered as corporate laptops.
