No surprise Apple is keeping the 13". Kuo's also predicting the return of 15" with scissor.

It makes the MacBook Pro lineup more complete.

I think we'll see similar updates to what the 16" received. The bezels on the 13" are large, and a 14" display makes sense along with the magic keyboard, improved speakers and mics, and updated thermal design.

Even if it increases the weight/thickness slightly, this is a "Pro" machine and I like the direction Apple is taking in that regard.
I wouldn’t be so sure. They may slim down the footprint of the 13” instead. The 13” models, at 15/28W, have never had the heat issues of the 75+ Watt 15” model.

Have the 2018 MBA and I really enjoy it, but I hate the feeling that the keyboard is a ticking time bomb. Will look to get one of these once released. WiFi 6 would be nice, I try to keep tech for a good few years, so I’d rather have it now then wait far longer for my next purchase beyond.

13 inch form factor is very comfortable, if they could do the same as 15->16 it would be a very attractive notebook.

The report claims the display size will remain 13.3 inches, although given the source is DigiTimes, we would not completely rule out hopes of a larger 14-inch display.
Pretty sure they won't be able to find 0.7" of extra screen space from the bezels, if they couldn't find that much with the 15" model.

That said, I hope they don't increase the weight of the pro or the air models when updated with the scissor keyboard. I don't care about thickness if they need to increase that, just don't increase the weight.

Shouldn't 2020 be the year of a "complete" redesign?

Surely the take-home lesson from the butterfly keyboard disaster should be "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" (with the corollary "if it is broke, fix it ASAP")....?

Even if the "problems" with the butterfly keyboard were a complete fake-news fabrication (not that I believe that), it is a total PR failure. Apple's release of the 16" who's main selling point is the new old keyboard effectively concedes the point and hammers the nail into that coffin. So priority #1 will now probably be to drop the butterfly keyboard like hot garbage.

Any complete redesign would be better if it waited for major new technology - at the least a new generation of Intel chips, maybe OLED or Micro LED displays, maybe ARM CPUs (qv. ad nauseum elsewhere). However, the keyboard swap could be seen as an 'emergency decision' and doesn't necessarily signify in the longer term.

The 16” did not get WiFi 6. Doesn’t mean a new 13” will not, but just keep in mind the 16” didn’t actually get any hardware upgrades (other than additional CTO options) - it just got effectively a slightly new enclosure.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Intel has released a 10th gen CPU that fits the 15" MBP yet.

Intel has released one that fits the 13" though (around same TDP as previous 13" CPUs).
And that one supports Wifi 6, TB3 (built-in = better eGPU performance), 6 cores and 64 GB RAM, up from 16 GB for 9th gen.

Same old iGPU though, so .. Navi-GPU would be nice. My guess is we'll see 6 core, 32 GB, with no Navi.

If they increase to 6 cores and 32 GB, I'm buying day one.
If not, I don't know... I really don't like 15-16" size laptops.

Much rather see a 14" notebook in the same size case as the current 13". They did it with the 15" so should be able to do the same thing with the 13"

Agreed, but wow you guys remember Ming-Chi Kuo’s report from February where he predicted Apple’s releases this year? I’m waiting for another one of those.

I sure wish Apple would offer the opportunity to upgrade the keyboards from the 2018 models to the new keyboard. I be happy to pay for the privilege. I had a chance to play with the new one this weekend, and it's much better feeling than the pounding-on-concrete version I have.

But will it support 32GB of RAM?
Only if Apple moves to an Intel CPU that supports LPDDR4/x as the 13” model is too small to get a much larger battery to deal with regular DDR4 DRAM power consumption and only if that CPU supports Intel’s Gen 11 ”Iris Plus” iGPUs.

Whether that ends up being 10nm Ice Lake CPUs is dubious at best, given the lack of real substantive speed increases, low yields and abysmal clock speeds relative to the 9th Gen 28w TDP U-Series currently in use with the 2019 13” MacBook Pros.

Wouldn't that require re-machining the aluminum case? The inverted "T" arrow keys if noting else.

I completely agree. It would be very desirable too if they implemented WiFI-6, moved the entire MBP line to Gen 10 processors implemented FaceID and incorporated an HD video camera. A USB-4 implementation would also be a good idea, assuming the tech is mature enough.

The base spec was increased, the screen was made bigger, the audio was improved, the battery and charger are bigger and more powerful. No hardware upgrades, you say?

Yes the new intel chips have wifi 6 but the processor is slower than the current i9 processor because they are i7 processors.

but what would Apple charge for all that ?
