Having seen a current gen Macbook Pro 13, the screen is really nice. I am not convinced the super hi-resolution laptops are truly worth the extra cost for most people.

I wonder if Apple will double the existing 1280x800 screen of the 13" MacBook Pro or will they use the 13" MacBook Air's screen real estate as a basis and double 1440x900. Conveniently, 2880x1800 on a 13.3" display works out to ~255 dpi which means the same wafers could be used to make a 3360x2100 15.4" screen (double 1680x1050) which has a similar dpi for a BTO option in next year's 15.4" MacBook Pro.

That would definitely be interesting to see. I'm just a little surprised Apple hasn't merged the MBA & MBP lines. Very simple lineup, 11, 13 & 15 inch models. The only hard thing would be to get a dedicated GPU in there to drive all those pixels and keep a 7 hour or so battery life.

Windows 8 is aweful - think its about time I finally switch

I'll have to ask u guys where the best place to sit in Starbucks so my new mbp gets the most attention though

Sit on the Google Wallet terminal. Everyone will see you, and the Starbucks employees will never even notice that the Google Wallet terminal has disappeared to where the sun never shines.

GAH! I'm about to pull the trigger on the purchase of a much needed replacement laptop for the office. I was going to go with a 13" MacBook Air, but now................?

Thanks for the heads-up, MacRumors staff. You may have just helped avoid a possible case of buyer's remorse. :)

Yes, and is it worth $400 more for an office computer?

apple are screwing themselves over by not releasing it in August when the school semester starts. There are going to be a lot of students who would purchase this but releasing it in october is going to be too late.

no...those buying a Mac for school will purchase either an Air, Macbook Pro 13, or Retina Macbook.

The majority if not 95% of those starting school have 1. no idea mac rumors exists, or that there is a supposed 13" rMBP. Apple is smart. Why release something the majority of the market doesn't know about/need. Release it after everyone buys them and make even more money.

My friend used to work at Apple R&D. He's waiting to buy this because he said he confirmed it's coming out for sure.

Interested in seeing. Wouldn't mind saving up and getting one of these

Something like this, both with 8GB of ram:

Basic model with 128GB SSD for 1499$
And stronger model with 256GB SSD for 1899$
With a BTO option for 512GB right away or bit latter.
Stronger model will for shure have i7, basic could get the i5.
Think, the HD4000 will be the only GPU.

Good question.

We'll be using it for working with high-res photography on a regular basis and frequently out in the field, so the pumped up graphics card, CPU, and RAM will be good. The person who'll be assigned the laptop finds 15" is just too large and cumbersome. Meanwhile, the MacBook Air's small SSD drive poses potential issues.

Admittedly, there is perhaps a small bit of this option being an indulgence (perhaps somewhere approaching $100 of the potential $400 difference you propose). However, considering the choices were initially between the 15" MBP with Retina or the 13" MacBook Air, this seems a good compromise on first inspection. I won't make a definitive decision until I finally know the real numbers and look at them side-by-side while weighing pros and cons.

Display resoluion would be what? 2560 x 1600 or 2880 x 1800?
I think it's safe to consider it will be a 2560 x 1600 screen (220-230 ppi range),
with possibility to choose HiDPI resolution 1280 x 800 for best quality (2x),
and scaled higher resolutions like 1440 x 900 and 1680 x 1050
(just as it is possible to get up to 1920 x 1280 on the retina MacBook Pro 15").

Its a shame apple is not releasing it before the back-to-school program ends. As a University student who is waiting to upgrade from an 08'Macbook Pro 13... Its very annoying. Also most students at least in my university(An Engineering focussed one) prefer the 13 pro over the air due to the upgradability option after purchase. I hope they dont make it like the 15rMPB where DIY upgrades are impossible.

Shure it will be the non upgradable. They just follow the engineering process on smaller part.
