I dont understand why ipad got retina and is still the same price? So why isnt the entire macbook pro line retina now at the same price?

The 15" MBPr is not really that much different in price - the retina laptops happen to have completely solid state storage, a lot of memory (also DDR3L, not DDR3 like the regular pro line), and have to do a lot more work to push that display...in addition to the cost of the display.

If they don't bring back the 17" MBP by next summer, I'm jumping back to Windows. That's about as long as I can keep using my June 2009 MBP17. I like Apple, but the main basis of my brand loyalty was FCP. Now that I've switched to Adobe CS6, I'll buy from whichever manufacturer can give me the most powerful 17" laptop, preferably with a retina screen.

She's dead Jim..... if you need such a big screen for a laptop then just buy an external monitor for it,buy it with the money you'll be saving from buying a 15 inch one it's only two inches bigger, and anyways remember its a laptop it's meant to be portable I think 17 inch laptops is just pushing it but that's just me

Two separate events make much more sense.

If they announce the iPad Mini, no one (in the news) is even going to be paying attention to a new laptop.
They'd be better off announcing the laptop a week before...

Is anyone else scratching their heads a little bit with this? It seems a little out of Apple's character to release a whole new product (ok, well, for the most part new) and then say, oh yeah btw here you go, have a laptop too.

It would be unusual to announce two products from different categories together. But I think it's possible for this rumor to be true- Apple could tie them together by presenting them as two more portable, more affordable (crossing fingers) models of two existing products.
(iPad : iPad Mini :: 15" rMBP : 13" rMBP)

And I really hope they release it with a discrete GPU. I have an ancient 15" C2D that I want to replace, but I want the replacement to be at least a passable gaming machine, not the "barely-sometimes-adequate" performance of HD4000 graphics.

If this is true how long do you all think it will take the MacBook Air, iMac, and Apple Thunderbolt Display to get Retina treatment?

I'd rather have all those extras EXCEPT for the 'retina' display. Its not like I can make out individual pixels anyway, but I *will* notice a performance increase everywhere else.

How about confirming the iMac release you bastards!

Rather than confirming the next iMac or Mac Pro, I'd much rather see Apple publicly confirm they don't care about professionals.

iOS for everyone!

No way Apple does this. 15" is the perfect size for a MacBook Pro. No one wants this. Offering a smaller version of the MacBook Pro would just fragment the market. It would just be a fatter MacBook Air.

:D

I know a ton of people who want this...personally I think 15 is a little too big for my tastes. Apple would be stupid to only give the 15 Retina when they sell WAY more 13 inch laptops.

$1500+ for a 13" underpowered laptop with a nice screen...no thanks.

I'll keep my 13" Air

You don't know the specs yet. Your 13" Air is probably weak since it's an Air, so I wouldn't make any big assumptions.

Price premium of the Retina Display is about $200. And do remember that there is a lot of fudging because when you configure a 15" Classic MBP with the same hardware specs as the 15" Retina MBP, it costs just the same even without the additional cost of the better display.

Again, these are just guesses, but they're educated guesses.

Yes these are mostly reasonable guesses. But if you configure the existing 13" base model, add in 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, it comes up to $1499. Throwing the premium on for the Retina Display then bumps it up another $1699--just below my estimate. There's three questions here: will it come with 8 GB RAM standard (like the 15"), will it have an i7 processor, and has the price of the display dropped enough to justify a smaller premium for the Retina Display?

My guess is that it will come with 8 GB RAM standard. Apple probably won't include a dedicated GPU in this computer. Having the additional RAM will ensure that this computer isn't prone to the sluggish animations that the 15" has on Intel graphics. I also believe it is likely to have an i7 for general performance reasons. This is supposed to be a high-end professional machine, slightly different than its entry level 13" without Retina Display.

Whether or not this display is come down in price, I have no idea. It may be easier/less expensive for Apple to make 13" displays than 15"; after all, they've been making high-resolution iPhone and iPad displays for a long time now.

After using the integrated GPU on rMBP and finding out how choppy and under performing it is, I think it would be a good idea to pass this IVY bridge and wait for Haswell. The GPU will be twice as fast which is badly needed for retina display. ;)

I don't think it's a GPU problem considering a MacBook Air can easily run 2 daisy chained Thunderbolt Displays as well as an its internal display, which is 2x the number of pixels as on a 15" rMBP The bottleneck is somewhere else...

The big issue with the 15 inch was that the resolution was so high that there was no hardware support for scaling requiring software scaling which caused the choppiness. The 13 inch should have a smaller resolution in comparison and should handle much better.

I'll keep my 13" Air

13" rMBP mostly will include 35Watt CPU like the current gen 13" MBP and add the SSD module, so it will be more powerful than the MBA 13" but it will start at $1499

Mostly Apple will drop the price of 13" MBP to $999 (like FRYS sales every other week),

I am thinking of getting one - 13" MBP (plus monitor) to replace iMac. Already got 240GB SSD.

It might replace the current MBP completely pretty soon. The MBPR is actually way cheaper than a MBP non-retina for the same price.

because of how Apple priced the SSD upgrades and RAM upgrades.

last 6 months the RAM and SSD priced dropped a lot. you can pick up Samsung 830 256GB SSD for $170 - apple kinda needs to adjust their upgrade pricing.

The reasons against a dedicated GPU are pretty obvious: takes up space inside the computer reducing the size of the battery and battery life, also uses more power again reducing battery life, requires a more powerful cooling solution, plus it costs more.

Plus it works better.

Apple needs to update a lot of stuff...

And make less profit? No way.
