How many students bought the $2200 rMBP?

Be surprised, but many students got it through Apple's financial program + discount (with discount it's $2000). Every class I go to, at least 10-15% of the students are with rMBP (classes of 200-300 students).

People do know with a discount the non-Retina would be cheaper, don't they?

What resolution is this going to be?

15" retina sux because of its actual effective 1440x900 resolution which means everything is huge and is less useful than the old x1050 resolution of the HD screen.

If the effective resolution will be x800 then that will be horrible and less useful than a macbook air!

i wonder how they plan to deal with this

$1500+ for a 13" underpowered laptop with a nice screen...no thanks.

I'll keep my 13" Air

It appears as though you're aware of knowledge nobody else knows. Please share the 13" rmbp specs with the rest of us!

shucks I just picked up an 'open box' mid 2012 13"/4gb/256GB MBA for $1270 total incl. tax from best buy on 10/02,but i'm a little hung up on the 4gb of ram (which is the only way BB offers them). I'm still within my return period though. oh, what to do...what to do...

How come people can complain about more options to chose from? It doesn't matter whether you have the money to get one or not, it's always a good thing that better options are brought to the table, no matter if it fits your own personal budget or not. People tend to be some egocentric these days...

I guess the 13" retina won't be a MacBook Air model simply because the integrated Intel graphics simply aren't capable of driving such a display resolution, in order for that to be possible Apple have to wait for the Intel Hasswell to be released and I'm not sure if that would be enough either.

It will be interesting to see what kind of power Apple is able to crank into this 13" while they keep the thin design of the new MacBook Pro 15" Retina model, there isn't much room for a dedicated graphics chip and large battery so it will be very interesting to see what will be the outcome.

For those who claim this will be underpowered compared to MacBook Air 13", what have you been smoking this morning? The MacBook Air houses a 1.8GHz Intel Core i5 ULTRA LOW VOLTAGE CPU, it's not a bad CPU but it's not on the same level as the standard voltage CPU that we'll most probably see in the MacBook Pro 13" Retina model. I'll guess we'll see a Intel Core i5 of sorts with about 2.5+ GHz and because the MacBook Air 13" features a ULV CPU the graphics chip is lower clocked compared to the integrated graphics chips of regular Intel IvyBridge CPU's and considering the MacBook Pro 13" Retina will most likely feature some sort of dedicated graphics solution you can't really compare it's performance with a MacBook Air 13".

Im gonna get a 13 rmbp for removal of dvd drive, slimmer body and probably a dedicated gpu :D

"The OS and/or drivers are/is not properly coded to handle the increased pixel resolution. "

1. How sure are you it's a software problem?

2. If they are going to be releasing the 13" rMBP very soon, is Apple going to be able to rectify the software in time for release?

A 2008 MacBook with an integrated GPU, being the first with mDP, could power a 30" ACD smoothly while also powering its internal monitor. That's a 2560x1600 and a 1280x800 monitor. On a 4 year old IGP. It's 2012 now. Pixel fill-rate is not the issue. Their scaler for HiDPI probably isn't fully optimized yet.

I predict $1799 now, $1499 next year.
Along with a reduction of the rMBP 15 to $1999 next year as well.
Now they can speculate on early adopters, next year they will streamline the line-up to only Air and rMBP, and will cut price to sweeten the pill.

Yes, but we have excuses such as "Retina is going to be easier on your eyes, and you would be able to read more with rMBP!"

Anyway, you know the drill, buy today, pay tomorrow. I have the money, but many morons who buy a laptop for $2000 with high interest financial program don't.

here are the benchmarks the 13'' MBA holds its ground compared to the MBP

so seriously besides a higher resolution display whats the rush.

Haswell will be much better.

if they had a Separate GPU and two Tbolt ports I'm sold but that would never happen.

She's dead Jim..... if you need such a big screen for a laptop then just buy an external monitor for it,buy it with the money you'll be saving from buying a 15 inch one it's only two inches bigger, and anyways remember its a laptop it's meant to be portable I think 17 inch laptops is just pushing it but that's just me

So... You are honestly suggesting that we should carry around a 27" screen in addition to a 15" or whatever laptop? Are you serious?

The point of buying a 17" notebook is to have a large MOBILE screen with you.

Just some interesting thoughts...watcha guys think of my ideas?

I think your ideas don't account for the fact that HiDPI mode is not a 1:1 mapping system for points vs pixels. A 2560x1600 13" MBP only has 1280x800 usable points on screen, making it effectively "lower resolution" than the 1440x900 MBA.

Reducing the 27" iMac's real-estate like you suggest is an awful idea.

Sure there's always the Retina screen "scaling" they use, like 1920x1200 on the 15" MBPr, but you'd think they would use that to give the 27" iMac even more real-estate, not to give it back the real-estate it had before.

I would call this rumour very plausible indeed. And a lot of people would want a 13 rMBP.
