3) We created a new design, which will also offer some scratch resistance, on top of improved shatter resistance."We also wanted to make it scratch resistant." There are two ways to interpret this sentence:
1) the iPhone 11 and previous models have NO scratch resistance AT ALL. And the 12 is the 1st iPhone to even think about it.
2) the iPhone 12 has BETTER scratch resistance than previous iPhones.
It seems you think that in the prior 11 years of making a full glass screen device with Gorilla glass they've never thought about scratch resistance before this Ceramic Shield, and thus now "some scratch resistance is available".
I think the 2nd choice makes more sense...
What do you think?
Evidently not. I am generally careful with my devices, but small mishaps can happen. I’m on my fourth iPhone and none of them have ever had a scratch. I still have my old iPhone 4 (used as a glorified iPod) without a case and it doesn’t have a mark on it.I am the most careful person…
What you’re describing is a very rare case and doesn’t represent the thousands of data points where the screen was well protected after a fall. Of course when I say this I’m referring to a tempered glass protector and not a plastic sheet. For those advocating screen protectors, the ONE time I used one it came in handy after a drop. You see, the screen cracked on that drop but the screen protector was still absolutely flawless!
For the month or so before I replaced the screen that screen protector kept me from feeling any sharp cracks or splinters of glass. It was great, but I don't believe that's the purpose of screen protectors right? I mean, the screen protector protected itself - not my screen.
Anyway, I've cracked only one screen since I started using smartphones in 2009. I don't use cases and I haven't used a screen protector since 2015. I don't care about scratches as that to me is normal wear and tear. And since I keep all my phones (I don't sell them) resale value isn't a concern.
I had a Zagg Invisible Shield, their top of the line protector for a 6+ at that time. Some scratch resistance =/= better scratch resistance.So...the phone became better in terms of scratch resistance. Look you answered the problem yourself now, I knew you could do it!
Some scratch resistance =/= better scratch resistance.
Apple didn't say the scratch resistance is NEW, just that the Ceramic Shield has scratch resistance.Yeah, I’ll let you go ahead and try to explain this one too. No scratch resistance on the 8? ?
It‘s OK to be wrong sometimes!
Apple didn't say the scratch resistance is NEW, just that the Ceramic Shield has scratch resistance.
Apple says that the iPhone 13 Pro has a telephoto lens. Did the iPhone 12 Pro not have one?
It's OK to be wrong sometimes!
Doesn't matter what I think. And which scratch resistant glass do you think is better, an iPhone 8 or the iPhone 12?….
Doesn't matter what I think.
Apple said nothing about the iPhone 12 being more scratch resistant.
If you read that paragraph, it's referring to the back glass, which is not ceramic. You should tell that to the Apple. They seem to think otherwise...
None of the screenshots so far shows Apple claiming that the scratch resistance for Ceramic Shield is the best ever.Do you know what the word "ever" means? Because when you use it multiple times, the latest time includes the times you said it before that.
If you read that paragraph, it's referring to the back glass, which is not ceramic.
I'm referring to this screenshot you provided, which states, "dual ion-exchange process we use on the back glass"“The FRONT and back feature custom glass with a 50 percent deeper strengtening layer, etc, etc.“ Do you need a screenshot or are you on the same page as the rest of us?

iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models feature a new Ceramic Shield front cover that is "tougher than any smartphone glass," according to Apple, but the displays on the devices still have similar scratch resistance as previous iPhones based on a new test.
Zack Nelson today shared his much-anticipated iPhone 12 Pro durability test on his YouTube channel JerryRigEverything, and based on the Mohs hardness scale, he found that the device's display is "still scratching at a level six, with deeper grooves at a level seven," in line with dozens of other smartphones he has tested over the years.
Nelson did find that the scratches with the level six Mohs pick appear to be slightly fainter compared to previous iPhones, but there is no dramatic improvement.
JerryRigEverything's results differ from a similar test by YouTube channel MobileReviewsEh, which found that the iPhone 12 stood up to the six point and saw some faint scratches with the seven point on the Mohs hardness scale.
In fairness to Apple, it advertises the Ceramic Shield as providing 4x the drop performance, rather than improved scratch resistance. Earlier this week, insurance company Allstate conducted a series of iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro drop tests and found that the devices are indeed more durable than the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro in similar tests.

Plus, isn’t there an oleophobic coating on top of that that can gather its own scratches?Nope. In fact, more shatter-resistant would usually mean less scratch-resistant. It's a trade-off.
Yeah, I’ll let you go ahead and try to explain this one too. No scratch resistance on the 8? ? the page talks about the phone glass on front and back.
It‘s OK to be wrong sometimes!
Oh right. Forgot about that. I think that is restorable in some cases?Plus, isn’t there an oleophobic coating on top of that that can gather its own scratches?
You pay $35 once to get your glass replaced 4x a year?? Wow you’re scamming them lol, congrats. I’d be shocked if that program sticks aroundI don’t know where you are but we do BestBuy’s Lifetime Glass. I think it’s $35 up front which is excessive but 4 times a year, we go in and they replace the glass. That includes installation. It breaks or gets very scratched and they put a new one on. Then I peel the screen protector off and sell the iPhone with a perfect screen.
