I have had iPhones every year since the 3GS and I agree with OP that the screen not being as scratch resistant as previous models.

Interestingly enough, I feel that the Apple Leather Case for this model isn't as resilient as previous versions. I could sell mine as new after a year as careful as I am. This version already has a few (2) annoying 'blemishes'/dents.

(Which reminds me, I never sold my 12 Pro Max leather case sitting in its box in my car)

dawg.. the screen scratching is literally a non issue. you’re making the conscious choice to get scratches on your screen by not using tempered glass.

on the other hand, tempered glass doesn’t help much for drops that would shatter the screen - hence why apple implemented ceramic shield.

you can stay up in this forum and be mad at apple for your own mistakes all you want, meanwhile me and plenty others are living a scratchless life by applying a $5 tempered glass and not worrying about it

I just find it slightly comical that during the last few years of using tempered screen glass protector not one ever had the slightest of scratches on them during or after a years usage. Yet I am 💯 % confident that if I hadn’t used a tempered glass screen protector then the displays of said devices would
have had scratches. What’s the moral of my story ? I guess $5 tempered glass screen protectors are more scratch resistant than $1k smart phone screens. 🤣

My iPhone can scratch extremely easy and there is no screen design protection from small drops, the Ceramic coating is BS it does nothing. I am the most careful person and really disappointed with how easy damage can occur.

I’ve seen this phone move and slip from surfaces that have the tiniest of gradients, be warned, cover your lovely looking iPhone with an ugly case.

Yeah, I agree with OP as well. I’ve seen tests on YouTube with iPhone 12 Vs 13, and despite both having that Ceramic Shield, the iPhone 13 scratched more easily than iPhone 12, which was really scratch resistant.

And after having an iPhone 13 mini for a few weeks, I can confirm that its screen scratches easily. So if I finally keep this phone, or end up buying an SE 3 in march, I will put on a glass protector, because even if the screen doesn’t end up getting scratched (which is highly unlikely), the oleophobic coating wears off, and after a year or two, the keyboard zone -I type swiping- ends up without coating (something that is clearly visible and you can feel it as well, as that zone gets more grippy).

So a glass cover is highly advisable.
Cheers.

Same. I've had other iPhones, and scratching the front glass was never really a problem. With the iPhone 13 pro max I got several scratches, including a large one in the first week.

Maybe the glass is less likely to shatter, but it still feels like a big step backwards.

I honestly have to hand it to you people that don't put cases or screen protectors on your phones. You are braver than I.

For me, I don’t want to even have to think about scratching the screen. I put a $10 glass screen protector on my 13 Pro Max just after it arrived and I had it out of the box. And since then I have not given it a second thought. If I do scratch the screen protector, I simply remove and replace it with the other glass screen protector that came 2 for $10. And you know what, in the 4 months since I have had the glass screen protector, not a single scratch on it.

Plan the worst, hope for the best.

Nothing wrong with doing something so inexpensive as a glass screen protector.

I have a silver 13 Pro Max. I knew when I ordered it that the silver is easily scratched and a finger print magnet. For that reason, I put a clear gloss skin from Xtreme skins on the sides. Now I don’t have to worry about finger prints or scratches, for a $4 expenditure. The skin gets scratched, I apply the other skin which I order 2 of them.

These are stunning looking phones and I would rather enjoy them without worrying about damage to them.

And none of what I have done hides the beauty of my silver 13 Pro Max.

I have to change mine soon. I think the oleophobic coating has worn off. No biggie.

Interesting post… I had my iPhone SE 2020 for 1.5 years, no babying and the phone looked pretty good. I call BS that the SE is more durable than a 13 Pro.

That’s not true the ceramic coating is also for eliminating scratching, my point is this the worse model phone to date for picking up scratches and reducing cracks from a simple drop, it has is step forward like they are claiming.
The ceramic coating is aimed at minimising shattering not for scratching...for scratching you need to search for sapphire
Jesus...

Yep, step backwards for scratch but 2 steps forwards for shatter
If Apple will go sapphire we will have 2 steps forwards for scratch and 1 step backwards for shatter

OP please post a pic with your issue...i think this is just winning about something that is not an issue, maybe just silly small scratches on oleophobic coating that every touch smartphones displays has it/can have

"We also wanted to make it scratch resistant." There are two ways to interpret this sentence:

1) the iPhone 11 and previous models have NO scratch resistance AT ALL. And the 12 is the 1st iPhone to even think about it.

2) the iPhone 12 has BETTER scratch resistance than previous iPhones.

It seems you think that in the prior 11 years of making a full glass screen device with Gorilla glass they've never thought about scratch resistance before this Ceramic Shield, and thus now "some scratch resistance is available".

I think the 2nd choice makes more sense...

What do you think?
Their statement states or implies absolutely nothing about the level of scratch resistance relative to previous iPhones. If they’d said “more scratch-resistant,” sure.

As an example, Apple has often reused parts between iPhone models — say, cameras — and then hawked them on marketing pages for the models on which they were reused. That doesn’t mean those parts are new, just that they’re a feature of the product they’re trying to sell.
