Even if we look at their web site - www.sonymobiledisplay.jp - we will be redirected to new site http://www.j-display.com. This is a new company, where Sony share is only 10% and main shareholder is "Innovation Network Corporation of Japan".

Ah right, I completely forgot about Japan Display. Thank you for the correction. That company is an amalgamation of Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba's LCD business. The reason Sony only owns 10% is because the Japanese government is subsidizing the three struggling Japanese LCD makers in the form of "Innovation Network Corporation."

In any case, the relevant fact is that SuperLCDs are made in the factories of formerly Sony Mobile Display, now Japan Display and has nothing to do with Samsung Display who do not make high resolution LCDs for mobile devices.

Well, I have been to 4 different stores, and tried several different models of the 64GB 4G (white, black, AT&T and Verizon). Unfortunately, I really cannot abandon the iPad platform (and really need version 3 for testing of retina apps) because I am a iPad software developer (which is funding a bigger project i am working on), besides that, i also use the iPad everyday because of the LTE and portability when I cannot have my MacBook Pro and my iPhone is too small for serious work (yes, i can accomplish serious work on it, it has become much better at being a creation device in the last 2 years.) Trust me, I have thought about it, but it really cannot be an option for me.

Also, just to list the ones I have had:
1st: cluster of dead pixels or cluster of dust
2nd: Dead pixel and a piece of dust stuck under the screen
3rd: Dead pixel and 1 LED backlight dead, making a very dark orb on the side of the screen, also damage out of the box
4th: 2 Pieces of dust stuck under the screen and a green bright stuck pixel
5th: Major Light leaking from an angle (like this:http://att.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1342106) and a dead pixel
6th: clusters of clusters of dead pixels or dust
7th: Very deep, dark scratches out of the box all over the back of the iPad, and a dead pixel
8th (current): Dead pixel and dust stuck under the screen, also after I went home I realized there were smaller scratches on it too

This is not me being picky, for the most part I can accept minor things like screen tint, but these are huge issues I should not have to settle with, I have asked a few of my friends if they would accept that, and they also said no, one of my friends even has an iPad 3 with NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER, even after me examining it.

No, this is you being picky. You're returning iPad after iPad after iPad. Get a refund and don't buy another one. You obviously have nothing better to do with your time.

Why would you even post that?

I don't like being harsh, but the crude truth is that making so many returns just doesn't make a reasonable amount of sense.

If I was heart bound on having a perfect iPad, I'd go to the apple store, tell them my expectations, and open it up in the store and test it with an apple employee. While you're at the store, deal with the problems and don't take the iPad home. Call in advance to make sure they have ample stock of the model you want. Just do it that way.

Personally after 3 iPads, I'd quit and not go for another. If I was in the store and the apple reps were helping me and agreeing and going through more with me, it might be more justifiable since it would be more like helping them sift through unsatisfactory stock: if they do agree with you at each point along the way and aren't just bending backwards repeatedly.

The thing is apple is just a company. The iPad is a product. The same rule applies to anything: don't expect perfection if you can't get it after making a couple returns. Once you start playing that game, you should be willing to settle at some point regardless. Going through 7 iPads means you realize there are issues and yet you want to defy the odds by spending tons of time repeatedly buying and returning.

Speaking of iMac screen, hope you'll be fine with it as long as possible... Regarding your lazy pixel, your are right: this is (totally) negligible compared to issues that regularly happen on these panels. You'll find many topic on the subject on this forum. Just two example (probably negligible for some...):

Sorry, that was out of context, but iMac screen are well known for this issue, I had to share... But I'm sure that if you go in an Apple Store with an iMac like this (warranty or not), they'll replace the panel for free.

Thanks you for these explanations Professor. Panel uniformity isn't the goal? Apple definitely doing it right: problem solved! :D

Does this really look as bad to me as it does to you? One of the worst i've seen.

There are too problem here: the easy one and the real one.

The easy one: just remove the iMac glasse and clean it from behind... When reassembling, try to avoid dusts behind it (not that easy, but doable).

The bad one: the panel itself has dark spot. The only solution: get an exchange from Apple. My 2007 iMac panel has been changed in 2010. Spots are back today... (no smoking house). No more AppleCare, but I definitely hope Genius will do something for it... Also, I'll probably get a Mac mini (or a Mac pro if Apple continue this model, but who knows...) with a separated display (Eizo), since this seems to be a major design flaw.

I also find 13 exchanges a little bit to extreme but I can see from your pictures that your complaints are more than valid, infact its actually questionable why these units got past quality control. Just get your money back and probably repurchase when the Ipad3 starts to ship with the IGZO screens.

Give me a break! Would you have personally accepted these units if you saw them yourself? This is not being picky. This is looking for something that works like it should be out of the box. A dead pixel means a component is not working...no matter how miniscule it is. So if you have a problem with that, deal with it! For your information, I just got a perfect unit yesterday. So if I can get it, he should get it as well. Blaming end users for Apple's lousy qc is so uncalled for. Rant ends

There is such a thing like spotting it only when you start using it or not being able to see these flaws due to the lighting condition in Apple store. Why settle for mediocre quality when it is supposed to be good from the start? You don't know how tormenting it is to go through the entire process so I suggest you zip it.

I'm the first one that will not settle for subpar quality and consider myself pretty anal about things. But this thread is a little bit weird. Obviously there are more concerns with the quality if this new iPad product due to the multiple threads posted regarding screen problems. However this one with 13 returns is really odd. The likelihood of one person having such bad luck is pretty unbelievable, especially when the majority of folks report clean iPads with no issues. Also, strange that the store wouldn't do something after multiple returns, either find a perfect iPad for this customer or stop the returns and give the money back. And then I'm still not understanding the comment about two of the returns being for the wrong color and upgrade. Did the purchaser not figure out what iPad he/she wanted on two separate occasions?

With some of these threads, I wonder if either there isn't some exaggeration or someone just pushing buttons.

Hi all, I think I have got something true with my experience. When you go to the store for a swap of iPad, most of the time the employee will give you a unit out of a brown box, not from the retail white box.
These are probably refurbished units coming from the return channel. They have much more probabilities of having obvious defects, otherwise they would not be returned.

Today I saw a unit out of the brown box, the non-uniformnity was very obvious. Warm on the low left part, cold on the up right part.

Concerning the tint or hue, you can compare the iPad to the 27inc iMac or cinima display (which are much well calibrated, and I do like their colors ) in the store, you will notice the iPad has pretty pink/purple tint, which I don't like.

This thread is such BS. If you are not happy after this many iPads you need to stop looking at how defective the iPad is and you need to start looking a YOURSELF!

Give us a break and go to Android or better yet a Kindle;)

So based on the photo you find that the quality on the screen he got is 'acceptable' or thats what the majority has ?

These people who keep returning their iPads need to post pictures of their MRI instead of a screenshot of their display.

So what your saying we should accept obvious defects? Please try not to push your relatively low level of expectation to others, just to avoid conflicts.

I'm having a hard time believing some could have 13 truly defective iPads in a row. And also having a hard time believing someone would return something 13 times in a row. At what point do you just ask for a refund and move on?
