If your expectations are that high you expect perfection, I wonder are you the same with your car, house, bike, phone, toilet roll?

I have found that purchasing poor quality toilet roll can lead to a fairly unexpected and unpleasant experience whilst attending to the numero dos.

Also, 13 iPads?! Why do Apple not just tell ya to take a hike!?

I bought a 27 inch i7 iMac last year, about three months into ownership I noticed a single pixel which was lazy, it often is black but sometimes it works.

Now I could have kicked up a fuss, but I chose not too, and have enjoyed my ownership of the fine machine.

Speaking of iMac screen, hope you'll be fine with it as long as possible... Regarding your lazy pixel, your are right: this is (totally) negligible compared to issues that regularly happen on these panels. You'll find many topic on the subject on this forum. Just two example (probably negligible for some...):

Sorry, that was out of context, but iMac screen are well known for this issue, I had to share... But I'm sure that if you go in an Apple Store with an iMac like this (warranty or not), they'll replace the panel for free.

----------

Shorter version: Panel uniformity isn't the goal, perceived uniformity is. And there is not a simple correlation between the two at all.

Thanks you for these explanations Professor. Panel uniformity isn't the goal? Apple definitely doing it right: problem solved! :D

My iPad has a couple stuck pixels, but they're so small that it's only noticeable at certain angles since it's a retina display (unlike a regular iPad 2, the iPad 3 is hard to see stuck pixels on in 99% of pictures). The stuck pixels are white so they're even harder to see, and even on an entirely black picture you have to look for the one worst one before you find it.

I also have a tiny bit of backlight bleeding on mine on the left side if you hold it upright. It's annoying, but it's not terrible.

I didn't return mine. It's overall quite good.

This is my recommendation to anyone who buys an iPad and ends up returning 2 of them and moving onto their third: Return the third and get a refund if you aren't satisfied on your third try. Returning one is okay if you have an issue. The product should work nicely, since it isn't cheap. Returning a second one is fine if you really still aren't satisfied. Once you're on your third, you're just getting ridiculous; if a product isn't satisfactory three times over, return the thing and take your business elsewhere, or wait until the product matures.

How many times do people have to explain there is no glue bonding the iPad 3 screen?

Taken directly from ifixit.com
"Just like its predecessor, the new iPad is very difficult to disassemble. Adhesive secures the glass to the case, making common repairs and battery replacement difficult."

Yep. It secures the glass to the case. Not to the LCD like on iPhone 4/4S where there was some glue problem on launch days...

do us all a favor, including yourself

Ok, so I'm on my 13th iPad. In fairness, one of those was because I decided I wanted a different color, and another one i decided i wanted to upgrade to one with 4G. 3 were returned right away in the store (scratches, dark blotches behind the screen). A couple were super yellow, one had over a dozen dead pixels, and one even had the bottom half of the screen turn baby blue!

Get a kindle Fire.

Totally agree with you. Plus, refunding money is something companies don't enjoy I think... If everyone who complain go back to the store and ask for a refund, it's the best way to let Apple know customers don't agree with so-so panels quality of this product.

If not, why will they change anything? They just have to find the limit point of acceptance (it look like they can go even further...) to maximize gross profits!

No, it's not the goal, for the reasons I said - it's a vague standard that is difficult to operationalize (you certainly haven't done it) and is not directly connected to perception of uniformity.

The screen's outer glass is attached to the body of the iPad around the edges with foam sticky tape. But there is air between the glass and the LCD.

People who are claiming the "glue will cure" and the discoloration will go away are referring to stories pertaining to the iPhone 4, whereby the front glass was physically bonded to the LCD panel, across the entire surface...a thin layer of glue was present between the glass and the LCD. This is not the case with the iPad. No glue = no discoloration = "no curing time" will solve a discolored iPad screen.

There's your problem! The air between the glass and LCD! Have you seen the air pollution in China?

ummm the lcd and digitizer are fuzed together on all the devices ip4+

Yeah?

So why iFixit remove the glass of the iPad 3rd gen (pics 1 & 2) and don't do it on the iPhone 4S (pics 3 & 4)? I thought it was related to the LCD and digitizer being glued together on the iPhone 4S (and obviously not on the iPad, which is ip4+, right?).

But maybe I'm wrong? :D

By the way, funny fact about display quality. Are Samsung sh*** panels do the same effect in a Sony device?* LOL :D:D:D

Sony forums (look like an Apple forum lol)
The Verge

*Not sure about Xperia S panels are Samsung Made, but I'm pretty sure I've read something like that..

I am also in a similar situation, I am on my 8th iPad and am getting increasingly annoyed with the terrible quality control. For the most part I can mostly put up with the screen tint, but I cannot stand scratches, dead/stuck pixels, dust under the screen and excessive light bleed RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. All 8 iPads I have had either one or more dead pixels, or a peices of dust under the screen, and 4 of those have even more surprising issues. And what starting to get a little bit upsetting is the attitude that the employees have been giving me, one of them going so far to call me anal. I miss the days where I can walk into a store to get a defect free product.

I'm pretty sure they're Sony SLCDs. Different kind of issue either way. I don't think Samsung makes a 4.3 inch 720p panel.

At what point do you say 'screw it' and get a refund? For me if, after two returns, it's still defective I'm taking my business elsewhere - either another store, online or a different product all together.

Sony S-LCD is now fully owned by Samsung - http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Press/201112/11-156E/index.html
"Under the agreement, Samsung will acquire all of Sony's shares of S-LCD Corporation (“S-LCD”), the two companies' LCD panel manufacturing joint venture, making S-LCD a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung. "

No more Sony SLCD, just Sammy SLCD's. Sony Xperia S and iPad owners are in the same boat. Quality speaks for itself.

That's unfortunate.

Nope. The SuperLCDs for the phones are made by a different company called Sony Mobile Display.

The division that just bought by Samsung makes the large TV displays and iPad LCDs. Samsung Display doesn't make those high resolution mobile LCDs, only AMOLEDs.

That's unfortunate.
Unfortunately or fortunately NoMoreSony is wrong there. SuperLCDs are still made by Sony.

Fantastic post! Thanks for your confirmation... I was searching for this!

So, this is sh*** Samsung panels all over the place for now? I hope some respectful manufacturer will come in a near future to provide respectful displays, cause we definitely need it!

Also, this is decisive for this topic too: give up exchanging iPad for this problem... All are (more or less) the same s*** for now. Nobody is going to provide any correct screen capture in the near future: problem solved. We will start the roulette when Sharp and others hopefully will be on track in iPad 3rd gen production!

To be continued... (later) :D

Samsung does make good displays. But those SuperLCDs are still made by Sony under Sony Mobile Display, not Samsung.

I believe the largest supplier of displays to Apple is LG by far since they supply iPhone displays as well as iPad and Macs. It's a bit of a myth that "an iPhone is all Samsung" because Samsung doesn't even supply the displays nor the modem chip, two of the most critical components there.

Sorry, but Sony Mobile Display Company is also no more exist. Even if we look at their web site - www.sonymobiledisplay.jp - we will be redirected to new site http://www.j-display.com. This is a new company, where Sony share is only 10% and main shareholder is "Innovation Network Corporation of Japan".

P.S. Sometimes (usually always) info from Wiki is quite obsolete.

Well, I have been to 4 different stores, and tried several different models of the 64GB 4G (white, black, AT&T and Verizon). Unfortunately, I really cannot abandon the iPad platform (and really need version 3 for testing of retina apps) because I am a iPad software developer (which is funding a bigger project i am working on), besides that, i also use the iPad everyday because of the LTE and portability when I cannot have my MacBook Pro and my iPhone is too small for serious work (yes, i can accomplish serious work on it, it has become much better at being a creation device in the last 2 years.) Trust me, I have thought about it, but it really cannot be an option for me.

Also, just to list the ones I have had:
1st: cluster of dead pixels or cluster of dust
2nd: Dead pixel and a piece of dust stuck under the screen
3rd: Dead pixel and 1 LED backlight dead, making a very dark orb on the side of the screen, also damage out of the box
4th: 2 Pieces of dust stuck under the screen and a green bright stuck pixel
5th: Major Light leaking from an angle (like this:http://att.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1342106) and a dead pixel
6th: clusters of clusters of dead pixels or dust
7th: Very deep, dark scratches out of the box all over the back of the iPad, and a dead pixel
8th (current): Dead pixel and dust stuck under the screen, also after I went home I realized there were smaller scratches on it too

This is not me being picky, for the most part I can accept minor things like screen tint, but these are huge issues I should not have to settle with, I have asked a few of my friends if they would accept that, and they also said no, one of my friends even has an iPad 3 with NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER, even after me examining it.
