With a USB-C only iMac freshly revealed, I just don’t buy they’re going to bring back any ports.
I believe the new iMac also has two that are Thunderbolt-capable. But … Apple is so obsessed with minimalism for the sake of minimalism, bringing back anything to add flexibility (and fewer dongles) will be a surprise.

Probably late October - November.
Could get announced at WWDC, and ship at the end of the year, but could also be a Sept/Oct media event. But yeah, not likely anybody will actually have one before the end of the year.

Still... would be kinda awesome if they did turn up a little sooner!

I'd be in for 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD. I do realize it's quite possible we won't see higher RAM options, but it would be great if we did. I've managed on 16GB in my 16" MBP, but it does hit the wall sometimes.

They have to ship within a few months, otherwise it will affect sales of existing models. For this reason, I'm thinking it's either a WWDC announcement with shipping late July/August or a Sept/Oct event, shipping Oct/Nov.

If I were Apple, though, with anticipation this high and people beginning to travel more, I'd want to ship new laptops over the summer or certainly by back-to-school season at the latest.

Sounds like you have a $4k Mac lined up. Hope you get it.

If the 14" comes earlier than we anticipate, that will be great. If I do splurge again and get the 14", I will have to figure out what to do with the M1 MBA, unless I keep it and possibly sell my iPad Pro.

I have to admit that I'd love it if they could find some kind of compromise between getting rid of the Touch Bar and just going back to normal function keys. I use the Touch Bar here and there (for volume/brightness, and occasionally in audio apps), and I use the function keys here and there (when working at home, on my extended keyboard), but neither is a must-have for me.

Haha... yeah, true. But I blew that much on my 2016 MBP which was red hot garbage—worst Apple computer I've ever owned (and that's since the early 90s). I think, to their credit, they learned a lot from that whole nightmare. The 16" MBP was a start in the right direction, and hopefully this year's models will continue the trend. We'll see.

As a side-note; it occurred to me that the whole soldered-in RAM thing that started a few years ago may have been a kind of transitional step for them, since the Apple Silicon machines don't have—and can't have—separate RAM at all. They needed their laptop buyers to get used to the idea... just a thought.

That is an excellent point about the soldered RAM etc. This time could very well be the 'golden age for Mac.

So you are going to plug it into an Ethernet wire, but not plug it into a power socket? How often is *that* scenario necessary?

Not uncommon at all for me and I suspect a great many others. Depends on the use case. It's true that where there's Ethernet there's almost certainly going to be mains power. But that doesn't mean you always want to use it. Sometimes you just need the Ethernet connection.

I also like the idea of Ethernet via the main power connection. Great for when you're based at a desk. Less clutter. But personally I'd like both options. Give us back the Ethernet port on the side of the Pro machines. If there's space for a MagSafe, then maybe there's space for a UTP port, too?

Sad to see the touch-bar go... Maybe the execution was botched but I think the idea of it was amazing. Maybe there is a renewed clarity internally around what needs to be touch and what doesn't need to. I guess iPads are better remplacements as companion device with sidecar if one really wanted a "touch" keyboard.

And I will be disappointed if a 100W Chip is all they have for iMac 27" or Mac Pro. I expect something more. ( Top Spec should be pushing to 300W )
in a desktop maybe yeah - I still don't think Apple will go anywhere near 300w in a desktop processor either though - even my Ryzen 5900X doesn't touch that and it's not exactly power efficent like ARM is.

would be nice to have mag safe enet but they won't as this has to travel on battery.
if you are using wired ethernet, then you would have access to mains power in almost 100% of cases I would expect. I can’t think of a single location that I have used with wired ethernet that doesn’t also have power sockets nearby.

Absolutely no - never ever going to happen thankfully - but it's a truly terrible idea.

They could have actual keys with programmable displays. I’d be fine with that. But I refuse to accept that any “compromise” that involves any sort of non-tactile, non-haptic, not-useable-without-looking-at-it monstrosity is anything other than a plague infecting the machine.

Haha... yeah, agreed about the lack of tactile feedback. In fact, I only ever used the Touch Bar for interactions that functioned as a slider—never for button functionality.

EDIT: In fact, that may kinda be my point... if they could have some kind of slider-like capacity up there, but also have a set of useful keys, that would be pretty great. Also agreed about on-key displays, btw. That could be handy.

So let apple put two digital crowns on there - one each for brightness and volume. Or 3, and add one to jog video or audio. But make the friggin thing useable without having to look at the keyboard, and don’t make is so that when you are touch typing and your pinky barely brushes the wrong place suddenly you have launched Siri, muted your audio, or done some other unintended action.

****ing touchbar is the worst.

After seeing the design aesthetic of the new iMacs, I'm prepared to be disappointed with the new MBPs.
I think is reasonable to expect that a portable would have significantly different design expectations (e.g. rounder edges), because it won’t just be sitting idle on a physical desktop most of the time.

But the cynicism of MacRumors readers can not be understated.
