I hope there will be a lower cost entry level 16" with the M1 chip, and higher end models with say M1X . Some don't need anything more powerful than M1 but want the screen estate. I'd love to know what the battery life would be if they just put an M1 in the existing 16".

You'd LIKE a bigger screen but you don't NEED it do you. I've easily used my M1 MacBook Air over the 16" MacBook Pro - there's nothing I can't do with a slightly smaller screen size.

Now that's more like it!
I have already saved up 4K for it; I'll buy the 16" at the best specs that money will get me.

At this point, I agree. Now that all M1 Macs (all low end) are out of the way, all of the first round of professional Macs (MacBooks Pro, iMac Pro, Mac Pro) will begin with M2.

And I expect M2 will be literally double the M1 in all respects.

If M1 was Double of A14 aka A14X, I really wish M2 is "Quad" of A15 at least, rather than Quad of A14.

Remember even the M1 is not very power hungry... there are plenty of room to go even beyond "Quad". Basically I want a 100W Mx SoC at least.

Apple has left legacy I/O behind starting with the floppy drive and serial port in the original iMac. That’s over 20 years of them moving ahead with new I/O and leaving the old behind. I cannot understand why anybody is surprised by this anymore. The original iMac massively accelerated the adoption of USB and led to a massive amount of new USB devices at the time. USB-C is becoming the new standard, and almost every device will have it sooner rather than later.

I mean, why not put a parallel port and a floppy drive on the new MacBooks too? Maybe it can come with a carrying case that has wheels since it will weigh so much...
Not really surprised. As long as Apple adds support to transition to the new ports and not just cold turkey do away with them, I'm fine. Apple's been pretty good with at least making adaptors. However, I've worked in places that straight up changed things. When staff asked for help transitioning to the new ways, the powers that be were like "Meh. Not my problem."

Still hope a cheaper Apple branded monitor is released alongside those new MBPs.

$1500 5K monitor would be nice, or 24" 4.5K ($1000) / 32" 6K ($2000).

MBA + 24" = entry level option
MBP + 32" = pro level option

Mac Mini + 24" = entry level option
"Mac Pro Mini" + 32" = "semi-pro" :D level option
Mac Pro + 32" XDR = pro level option

Don't tell me it doesn't make sense. Having only $5000 monitor option is ridiculous. Who buys a $5000 monitor for their iPad or MBA?

And other brands? They don't care about external monitors.

There’s plenty of space on the side for a bespoke port and it’s cents on the dollar for a MagSafe port in bulk as a un Apple affiliated tech, I imagine for apple themselves especially at such a quantity it would be a rounding error when it comes to increased costs.

the prob with magnetic usb-c cables is there’s still a nub that stick’s out that can be damaged or damage the port. (Unless they sunk a USB port in so with the disconnect connected it sits flush.

don’t give me wrong your solution is better than the current but it’s still worse than the original MagSafe
I dunno what's on the market now, but that nub could be pretty tiny, I bet they could make one that only stick out of the port a few mm. That wouldn't give it enough leverage to cause any damage if someone somehow got close enough to pub it.

I really hope the new chips in Macbook Pro are not 100W, bye bye battery life😅 I can guarantee however, that you will be disappointed. USB-C delivers max 100W, so the WHOLE laptop (not just the chip) under load will be under 100W.

Once these 14" and 16" Macbook Pros with new M1 are released, they will be awesome and total success right out of the gate.

100w?! In a laptop? You'd be lucky to get a 45w one.

I really wish they'd launch these things in August so college students could get them before the semester starts.
Parents of college students hope they'll launch these things after August so they don't have to buy a more expensive computer before the semester starts. :)

Seriously, college tuition is insane. 😿

Cannot wait, I have been holding onto my MacBook Pro since 2012 and I am just waiting for this update. My tax return money is ready!

Please no white bezel though!
Wished I did the same. That i9 inside my mbp it’s only good to heat up the space.

100W? This won't go in a MacBook Pro but iMac 30 inch, or MacPro I can see it.

People seem to be worried about the design because of the new iMacs. I believe those were just fun macs and more serious iMac Pros will come later. This is same with MBP, because it's also 'pro' the design will be more like current pro lineup.
Totally second this. The problem is they have made it far clearer now that if you want a decent iMac you need to pay much more. Before you could get away with getting a good 21inch iMac, no longer an option with this direction
