Ofc you will still be able to charge over usbC, but with magsafe you can charge faster and keep 1 usbC free by doing that
Yes m2 I expect will be in the 16” with bigger unifed in SoC gpu
IF they decide to implement USB PD which is not a necessity. some of the rumors this week suggested MagSafe only. For the expected 12+ hrs of battery life, I'm not sure of the benefit of faster charging, but I'm sure some will find it useful, I don't as it negatively impacts battery longevity

I am wondering why can’t they just add physical F-keys back and leave the Touch Bar. I know people complain about it (just like people complain about everything), but it still has uses, at least I have enjoyed it for the short time I have had my M1 13”pro

Yes! This is what they should have done in the first place. It was a bad day when the function keys had to start sharing their function with system commands such as volume and brightness.

Why do the M1 MBP's only have two USB C when the Intel version has 4? Step backwards?
No, step forwards depending on how you look at it. The current 13" M1 is really the replacement for the older low end intel 13" version that also has 2 ports. They're even priced that way.

The M1 ports, unlike on the intel, are full individual thunderbolt busses instead of one bus per two ports so you still have the bandwidth of the 4 port intel models.

Presumably, when apple releases higher end Apple Silicon MacBook Pros, they could put 4 ports on the 14" and 16" while leaving the low cost 13" with 2 ports.

Smart move by Apple. For the last five years or so it has been looking to differentiate its laptops through their physical form. Thinness, touch bar and butterfly keys for example. They are abandoning this strategy. Now it appears it is trying to differentiate with its internals, capabilities and functionality. They do not need to experiment with the laptop chassis and features any more. So, will see high quality and more traditional laptop design with hopefully an upgrade in quality and reliability. This move looks to attract the most possible consumers rather than alienate certain users. It's very smart and the new silicon gives them the ability to make this move. Bravo!

I don't use my Touch Bar very much, but I do like it for some very basic things. I wonder why they couldn't just do both? Why not add the function row back and also put the Touch Bar above that? Then you'd have less accidental key strikes on the touch bar, you could retain all the specialized buttons that now work with the Touch Bar, and also have standard function keys.

Can we realistically expect an equal bezel all around?
The current one is such a mess, so I'm hoping so, but with a decent camera, won't it need a thicker bezel up top?
Yes, thank you. I still cannot un-see it. Apple users pay more attention to detail and symmetry than Apple themselves nowadays.

I can't believe even frigging Dell can do a better job designing laptop monitors.

I'd much rather they keep the touchbar, improve it with haptics, AND have the function row. Would be a differentiating factor/useful tool without anyone losing precious keys. But the fact that they never released a desktop keyboard with a touchbar is a problem- iMac/mac mini/pro users lacking a feature the laptops had made no sense.
Never once missed the touch bar when using my Mac desktop. Says it all really.

I use the TouchBar occasionally and like the concept. But I like my function and escape keys. Why not just add the Touch Bar above the function keys?

And charging via USB-C needs to stay or they provide an adapter. There are USB-C "MagSafe" adapters if people need them. But I don't want an extra cable when I plug my Mac in to my monitor (currently one cable for power, video, USB).

Overall, seems like Apple have listened to feedback... but missed the boat on the solutions.
Always wondered the same. Why can't they keep both? There's ample space, and the trackpad is comically large as it is.

So finally we are seeing the benefit of Apple firing Jony Ive.

I know he had lost touch with reality when he ordered the ports on the side of the MBP by size, from largest to smallest. I thought to myself "What are the chances that an analysis of how ports are used would lead to a size-based order". It was clear that looks were taking preference to function. When a designer does that. It is time to find a new designer.

The way to design a computer is to look at how users use them, see problems, and address that problem. So if you see them using a pocket full of USB-C to X dongles, you need to recognize that as a problem and fix it. If you see then dragging around an external disk drive to fix the internal storage problem, then you fix that.

When I built stuff for a living, I'd have the company send by out and I'd watch our customers and take notes on the time they spent (or rather wasted) doing various tasks then would work on what we could do to address this wasted time.

Size ordering the ports was stupid because it places similar-sized ports close to each other where they can be confused. That touch bar was invented just to be different for product differentiation, for no other reason.

Let's hope that get back to looking at how users use the product.

Why do the M1 MBP's only have two USB C when the Intel version has 4? Step backwards?
They're a direct replacement for the low-end 13" Intel MBP, which also only had 2 TB3/USB-C ports.

The M1 Mac mini *is* a "downgrade" in terms of ports, from the i3 Intel Mac mini though, which had four TB3/USB-C ports.

The Macbook/s update we were waiting for. Next gen M1, 14" and 16", better display, no touch bar, magic-keyboard already. Not sure additional ports ? HDMI may be ? Ethernet why when faster WiFi 6E available this year ? USB-A is history, So, which port we need over and above USB4 ?

That's exactly what I want, as shown and described. I would re-sell my Macbook Air M1 and get the 14.

Cook mentioned the awful reception (I think it was close to his words) the 2016 generation got because they observed a significant uptick in the sells of the previous gen. Being Apple they were not gonna make a re-design and re-tool after a couple of years because of that but the revert back to the old style might be contemplated from a long time.

I have no strong feelings about the Touch Bar, but a really good display and 16 CPU cores sound pretty good to me. It would be a nice surprise if they were somewhat cheaper than current MBPs but I doubt it. How about 5G support and Face ID?

Blast from the past with MagSafe, and I love the concept of other specs. Sadly, I don't have confidence that Apple will pull this off without some negative surprise. After years of watering down features while increasing costs, I find it increasingly challenging to stay the course when I replace my 2017 MBP.

My next computer budget is around 6K-ish', and this new rig may well hover around that price point or higher. On the PC side that I've been eying, it too is in the high rent district. Fortunately, I'm not likely to pull the trigger on either one anytime soon but if I were, it would be on the dark side. 💻

What I want, aside from a sense-checked new MacBook Pro, is for that dried out senile accountant to livestream himself eating "We think you're going to love it" in large styrofoam letters for all the pain and inconvenience he's caused.

I'm mainly excited for the next gen M1X or whatever they call it. All design changes are secondary. For my workflow 12core (4+8+16) M1X will be enough, hopefully aiming to 16" version if the price allows it. Everything else is great addition to that. I believe this time Apple will bring 4 ports vs the 2 on M1, so the chip will support more external devices and be more flexible.

The Mac has become a long game of waiting and seeing. And considering the pie-in-the-sky "innovations" of the godawful 2016 generation are being rolled back, I wonder if the new roadmap is the result of new management by people more familiar and respectful of the Mac line and users. The previous MPBs were an insult and yes, I'm salty that we wasted so much time, effort, and money getting the right peripherals just so Apple would go "nevermind" on their whatever-vision a few years down the line.

Maybe Apple finally realized that USB-A is not going away, at least not for a long while, and USB-C can be finicky.

This might be the first Mac I am interested in purchasing since 2015. I could envision Apple including up to 2 USB-4 type C ports, 1 audio in/out port, 1 HDMI 2 port, and up to 2 USB type A ports.

Don't think you mentioned that the display will have curved corners. This is obviously going to happen given the way Big Sur Safari has the gaps in the corners.

I hope not. That would be stupid. No one designs web pages with rounded corners in mind. Moreover, you lose screen real estate, for what...?

Tim Cook got everything he wanted: a soaring stock, TV shows and movies to grant him a seat at the Golden Globes table, a subscription yoga service and a diversity center in Detroit.

Even if he doesn't go anywhere as CEO, I pray that an actual technologist with a vision and sense of care takes the helm for Apple's hardware and software products/services.
They haven't had that in a long time. If they wanted innovation they need a lot more memory, way faster video, more ports, 32tb ssd etc etc etc.

I am against removing TB and especially bringing Magsafe back. USB-c supposed to be the future for any tech device. Mouses/Ethernet cables etc. supposed to be adapting this instead of USB-A. Even USB4 is making usb as type-c by default. Bringing them would be a downgrade. In my case, I use my device cables with type-c as apple watch/iphone/ipad. My monitor has a type-c to hdmi cable(wished for tb3 monitor but its expensive).
In MagSafe case, I honestly love more to connect my charger into any ports to charge.

Since 2018 I'm using TB mac(coming from 2015 air) and since then I did not use fn keys once! Once. I love tb and its usability

I only can wish from Apple to:
  1. add more type-c ports
  2. 16" m2 with 32 gb ram
  3. 4k res?
  4. slim bezels

Interesting. I haven't missed the MagSafe port--especially the way it seemed to degrade the connector over time. I really like how the current version allows the cable to detach from the brick. That reduces the wear and tear when it's tucked away in a travel bag. Still annoyed having to hunt for USB-A adapters. Bring the SD port back FFS. There was no reason to get rid of that IMO.
