Looks like some of us are not getting anywhere near the cool temperatures people like MaxTech are getting on YouTube. He had 51C during his cinebench r23 multicore test:

Updated to 12.0.1, installed TG Pro (Trial), grabbed Cinebench from App Store.

14" M1 MAX, 64 GB, 2TB

Single core:

  • 68C (max)
  • Fans Off (never turned on, according to TG Pro, but if I put my ear up on the vents at top of keyboard I can hear a faint whir.
Multi Core:
  • Went to 100C within 3-5 seconds
  • Fans showed 2400 RPM pretty quickly (at 90C)
  • Turned it off within 10 seconds or so without letting it complete.
Is something wrong with our Macs, how are reviewers getting such colder temps?
  • Friend's 16" pro exhibiting this also, his goes to 90C with fans showing no RPM.
  • Seems like some of us, fan curves are messed up.
  • MaxTech had fans spinning (1400RPM) and holding only 51C multi-core, not on my 14", burst to 100C immediately.

I tried it on a few today. All ran fine. No noise and cool. I’d take it back and have Apple test or swap it. Doesn’t sound normal even for a previous gen Intel model.

What temps were you getting on multi core?

I don’t think the laptop was getting loud, but tg pro showed it was getting hot.

Thanks!

were you testing with the laptop on your lap while wearing a fuzzy robe which was blocking the fans?

Disconnect the power supply, power of your Mac, close the lid, wait about 30 seconds and then turn it on. This will do something "like" resetting SMC on previous Intel Macs. You may try if that helps. Fan never turned on during benchmarks is ridiculous.

Will try this now and report back.

My fans kicked on at 95C. I don't know how reviewers got 51C. He's using a 16" Pro, mine's a 14" Max. Pretty significant difference though in temps lol.

I got 96C max multicore when connected to external 38"
Single core I get around 73 in same scenario.

Will try without external connected...
Aaaand pretty much same results.
Base 14" with hub / network and few drives connected.

Sounds like we're in the same boat. MaxTech YT reviewer suspect. Waiting for Linus. I want to keep this laptop lol, but I probably didn't need 64GB/2TB. 32GB/1TB would have sufficed. One other owner above had only 50-60 in multicore. I'm hearing a few of us are running hot. TG Pro only came out a couple days ago to support our new chips, maybe there's some chance it's buggy software, but doubt it.

It’s up to you but I always think the earlier you return it the better.

Your your fans are not running until it is 95C?
Yes, you can watch the short video I posted, around the 1:15 mark.

The YT reviewer had 51C with 1400 RPM, my fans don't kick on at all until 95C.

The apple store guy I got it from, he was in college. How are they going to know if the laptop is defective or not? I'm stereotyping a bit, but he seemed to know very little about these new laptops. I'd probably want to run cinebench on the exchanged laptop right in front of them before deciding on taking it home lol.

This sounds almost impossible unless we got duds or something.

Just curious, are you on 14 as well?
I don’t personally have one, but where I work has a few and I tried a couple at the Apple store (not for temp). They all ran cooler than that, but I couldn’t tell you the breakdown of how different the 14 is to the 16 in terms of temp.

Right, 53C multicore (1500 RPM) sounds impossible. But you can see it in MaxTech's video (16 m1 pro):

So either a few of our laptops are dudded, TG Pro is reporting incorrectly (for either his or ours), or this is expected out of the new m1 chips.

I'm running it again and I don't see the fans moving at all (TG Pro displays 2400 +/- even at 90+)
***Fans kicked in at around 95C and temps are 92-95C after
****Fans stay at around 3500RPM... That's not even 50% while CPU is 95C. Either TG is messing up with fan control or apple made a rather ****** fan profile.

Another edit lol. After installing fan helper the fan kicks in nicely and temps drop to mid 80 while render is still going.
