In mid-December I ordered a 14” MacBook Pro M1 pro, 10/16/16 with 32gb of ram and a 1tb ssd. It shipped last week and today I received the package, addressed to me, containing a 64gb Wi-Fi iPad. I contacted Apple and was told I’ll hear back within 3 days. I am very annoyed, first by the fact of who knows how long I’ll have to wait to get my laptop now, and second, now I also have to deal with returning the iPad. Just terrible execution by Apple, which is especially aggravating considering the price of the computer. Weak.

Mistakes happen with Apple, Microsoft, Dell, Acer, and many other large corporations.

You will have to wait longer but, you will get your product. In the grand scheme of things, this is a small temporarily frustrating situation.
I believe it goes without saying that none of the stuff posted on this forum is particularly significant in the grand scheme of things… this is an Apple forum. That said, I think it’s reasonable to be annoyed that after waiting a month for your $3000+ order to arrive, you receive something completely wrong along with a message of, “we’ll get back to you in 3 days.” I guess I should have been more clear with the point of my post, but I’m curious as to whether others here have had similar experiences and what I can expect in terms of a response from Apple based on those past experiences.

Several people over the years have experienced the same situation. It is not unreasonable for Apple to tell you what they did. They have to do an investigation with your order. Apple will correct the situation.

Did the shipment come from the U.S. distribution center? That’s really the only place where I can imagine such a mistake happening.

Three days is probably the time needed to investigate. Does the tracking # show the weight as 3.5# or 1#? I'd use that to get them to expedite a resolution. That plus weight difference when received in hand I would've kept it sealed, taken photos for evidence then take it to Apple store to note in system.

Reorder and ask for a refund on return of the iPad for this order. You’ll likely get the new order sooner rather than waiting for an investigation, them to manufacture your machine and send. If you can afford to do so.

I disagree. You are making their problem his problem. First thing should have been to get another machine sent out immediately so that he doesn't have downtime waiting any longer than he already has. Investigate all they want to, but make him whole FIRST.

I'd definitely be disappointed.

I have run into a similar issue (not with apple FYI). They told me to keep the product and sent out the correct one later.

I was extremely happy in that situation, but it was resolved within the same day/call/chat. so if you were planning/needing your machine by that day/date/time for productivity, I understand your frustration.

But if Apple tells you to keep the iPad (for free) and they'll expedite you the correct order and deliver/ship it in a timely manner, I wouldn't be too mad. Things happen and you got a free iPad

(if its a base cheap-o $350 iPad I'd ask *politely* to exchange the "free iPad" for a *iPad Pro 11"* or an iPad Air "to allow me to get by while I wait for my MBP 14".

hell I'd ask them to include a Magic keyboard while I'm at it. *worst they can say is no to any of these "suggestions/requests"*

but all must be for free.

The classy response would be to immediately ship the correct order and collect the wrong package at point of delivery. And apologise.

Which would be an open invitation to all sorts of scams....

Plausible way they do it:
- make sure you really got an iPad (by checking ID for the package or even device)
- check where that was supposed to go
- contact who ever got the MBP to make sure he ain't in on the game

-> ship correct devices

Just chucking in an experience I had with Apple a bunch of years ago. I ordered an iPad and a Smart Cover for it, both to be delivered to my work address. There was someone in a different building at that company with the same name as me, so on my order address and order notes I specifically stated which building the order was to go to.

The iPad arrived absolutely fine and on time, the invoice showed both items were supposed to be in the one box, but the Smart Cover wasn't there. I asked the other guy in the company but he hadn't received anything. I waited a few days and contacted Apple. They apologised profusely and created a new order to send me the Smart Cover. They said that if the original one arrived I could either keep it or send it back, as it was such a low value item.

A few days later a new iPad arrived (!), but the Smart Cover didn't. I contacted Apple and they said they must've misunderstood what I'd said when I called the first time. They apologised and said they'll send me the Smart Cover. They said they'll send a courier to collect the second iPad.

Days later and a THIRD iPad arrived (!!), and so did the Smart Cover. I called them, and they said they'll get the courier to collect the second and third iPads. The courier arrived the same day to collect ONE iPad. He only had one returns box (which would only fit one iPad in its box).

I called Apple and they said to keep the extra iPad!

Errors happens..but again ,it doesnt matter how much it cost. Why some people tell us how much they spend on their things? are you a show off or what ?! or your subconscious tell us that $3000 is a heavy price for your wallet ?!
Again, by law, it doesnt matter if it cost $1 or $10000, you should get what you payed for...if not, you can return it/refund etc

Its ok, Apple will fix this for you, its just a matter of time...if time is very important for you, buy another Mbp (if they have in stock of course) and ask for the previous one" to be refunded

I *MOSTLY* agree but it really depends on what it is and the value/$ amount.

While the OP didn't need to state he paid XX.XX amount since the actual item is pretty expensive for the device it is.

(everyone should have the understanding that an upgraded 14" MacBook Pro M1 costs a lot in relation to laptop prices)

But if McDonald's gets my Big Mac order wrong, I'm not going to go Ape Shyt.

If Apple (premium prices, premium devices) sends me something wrong that's only costs/worth a fraction of what I originally ordered and paid for? Yeah, we gots some problemo's amigos.

Agree, but i was talking about online-tech devices orderd...Bic Mac i think its food :)) but even in that case i would cancel/refuse the order
Until the law was made for online orders, respect was a thing for shops and among people (seller and buyer relationship)
"Yeah, we gots some problemo's amigos" love it :D

Was the shipment weight off or anything ? Three day turnaround is pretty poor for a $3k device. I’d have expected a quicker resolution. In the past with mistakes I’ve gotten geniuses to resolve the issue the same day on phone and support chat.
This. I never had an answer like the OP from Apple, nor experienced such a strange mix-up. I would be fairly annoyed too!!

What I’ve suggested isn’t an unusual response from online retailers. It’s actually what I expect when buying online in the U.K.

Eh, basically the same thing

It is not an invitation for scams, and is in fact standard practice with most companies.

Send you a new device while they investigate the first shipment. If the first shipment is found to be a MacBook, you get charged for two Macbooks or you can return one of the Macbooks.

No reason not to give you a new device while investigation what happened with the first shipment. Again, this is pretty standard practice.

This is fairly absurd. Your thought is that I came to an internet message board to flex on how much I spent on a computer? If anything, I’m embarrassed I spent this much given the circumstances in which I’m now finding myself.

The point of mentioning the price is that these MacBook pros are a significant amount of money for a laptop regardless of the size of your wallet and you’d think you’d get a customer service response commensurate with the price.

Thank you to all that have provided responses. What I think I disagree with most is the notion that I should just suck it up and say “eh, these things happen. Thanks for the opportunity to be part of this, Apple!” It’s not an everyday order like a cable, for example, that I could just go buy at the store while I wait for them to sort this out. This is the most valuable company in the world and they should be disincentivized from being this sloppy. People should complain in this situation. That’s my opinion anyway. I’ll be curious to hear when and what Apple gets back to me with and I’ll report back here.
