Probably two different teams that don't / aren't allowed to talk to each other...I like how a $129 device comes with an A15 Bionic chip while the new $449 iPad 10.9" comes with only the A14 Bionic 🤣
We know the NIC was probably $0.15
Just a shameless cash grab... Apple knows anyone with a proper home theater wants this thing on ethernet, so they gate it behind the 128GB upgrade, which almost nobody even needs.
Sorry, I don't compulsively track Amazon's pricing, but the 3 times I've bought the product this year, it's always been $109, once it was $119.
I don’t see why anybody would buy this over a $40 Roku.
We are replacing our last 1080p TVs, so we bought an ATV 32GB last week for $104.49 (still unopened, LOL) and another in July for $109.
...until you microwave some popcorn. If you can't get a decent wifi signal, I suppose so. But if you can, wifi will very much work for streaming.
...until you microwave some popcorn.
WiFi is brilliant in situations where you can't run a cable or want portability - but cable is more reliable, more secure, avoids faffing around with WiFi passwords and, in a large-screen TV/Home Cinema installation where you're running cables for speakers, antenna, power etc. anyway it's well worth running an ethernet cable if you can.
There are $40 hobbyist boards with Ethernet connectors - leaving one off a is penny-pinching. If Apple were making a cheaper, plug-in "Apple TV Stick" (like the Fire TV stick) then, maybe.
How do you know adaptive sync is not supported?HDMI 2.1 quick media switching is still not supported. Apple can cram this “update” back where it came from.
That's Tim's style; he wants to squeeze every nickel out of you. I'm surprised he's not going to try to sell an Apple TVMessy upgrade. Apple used to have a "One choice for all" approach, but now you have to sift through a million configurations to find the one you want.
I normally defend Apple's choices, but this one is stupid. No Thread support? Why? Is there a licensing fee that they need to pay?
And nice if that could be sold as a peripheral that would work with the last model. If only theyd have actually made one…Had they added tracking on the Siri remote, like the new Airpods Pro - may have been a reason to upgrade..
You're likely right about the low usage of Ethernet. I use Starlink as my primary internet (rural living comes with a price) and have the original round dish variant. They removed ETHERNET from their router on the square dish variants and have an optional Ethernet Adapter. While some would gnash that this is a weird $24 USD cash grab, it is far more likely that the original router's phone home data clued them in that the users just aren't using Ethernet.Welcome to Macrumors. Where every consumer is a "Pro" and needs Ethernet.
You don't think Apple knows EXACTLY how many people use an Ethernet port? Probably 5% or less at best.
I bought two of the 128GB models. I don't even use Ethernet, and the space is a non-issue, but for $20 more, who cares?
Hell, my existing 4K is so light that my HDMI and Ethernet cables already threaten to pull it down or at the very least can't it backward. Why are people commenting about how lighter the lower model is? It's not like a laptop or iPad that needs to be carried around...at all.
I have a 4 year old Mesh router and stream 4k stuff to my WiFi ATV all day with no issues. I have zero reason to connect to Ethernet for any reason. It's useless.Glad there's a lower starting price-point now. Most people do not need ethernet on these - you'd have to have multiple Apple TV 4Ks in your home simultaneously running local uncompressed 4K streams (say a Plex server) before wifi starts to become an issue for you - unless your wifi was deficient to begin with. You'd probably bottleneck your local media storage before you bottleneck your wifi.
