lol. "That's just the way it is"... yeah right. I'd feel like busting out a big Shaq-fu right there.

Trust me. I wanted to share with him how I felt about that comment. Too bad he was hiding in the back. Like I said in another thread...You would have thought this would go to their engineers. As much as I love mac products, its just a pain when there is an obvious problem with their hardware for them to admit it.

The two techs I was working with were really trying... but the "lead" didn't feel this was important enough to discuss. After 5 years with my Powerbook I was hoping to replace it with a nice new macbook pro. Well, now on my second macbook pro in less than 20 days, it is sitting with apple.

I'm on my 2nd 2.4 penryn (1st one had a dead pixel) and tonight I experienced this problem. My computer was plugged in and I have custom power optimization with the following settings: Never put the computer to sleep when it is inactive and put the display to sleep when the computer is inactive for 1 hr. Other options include un checking automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep. Anyway i had itunes playing while I was doing something else in the room and when I came to move it the screen saver was on which was normal but when I unplugged the laptop I noticed the badness. I closed the lid, clamshell, and it put the laptop to sleep and when I opened it again everything was fine. It's never happened before so I wonder if it's something to do where the laptop tries to save battery so the display dims brightness and then the streaks appear. Something to look into perhaps.

my penryn 2.4 15"did this once a week ago or so.... i just closed the lid and opened it back up, then all was good

if it happens again i will snap pics and call apple

Add my 2.4 Penryn to the list of MBPs that did this!

I was carrying it down stairs to plug back in when i noticed it. areboot fixed the issue. I really curious as to what this is and why. My MBP screen is the 09C81 LG. I do not think its specific to a screen.

To me it looks like a short of some kind literally every other row of LEDs is out..

My two week old penryn 2.4 15" matte did this last night, after i had watched a dvd and surfed the net for a few hours, no big load on the processor. I was too tired to take a picture yesterday, today it has worked fine all day.

First I thought it had something to do with working in darkness, that my eyes got sensitive to the problem in the darkness, but I'm watching my screen in total darkness right now, and the problem is just not there. I had it in the lower third of the screen, to me it seemed like a misalignment of the backlighting, the dark bands really stood out, but faded away toward the top of the screen. This is very unnerving behaviour, I can't think of anything I did that could have caused it. My machine has the 9c81 display.

I had already started to look into the display quality, from day one I haven't been at all happy with the gradients and obvious dithering patterns of this panel. If it is going to start to do this intermittently as well I may have to rethink my purchase (which I don't want to, could not be happier with the swithc to osx!) Has anyone received a 15" matte with a different panel than 9c81?

Same problem occurred to me. I took a few pics (see the one attached) the second time it happened to me. I took my mac to the local store and showed the pictures. The "genius" simply dismissed me by saying "This is the second time I've seen this. I don't think it's a hardware problem and I believe it's a software problem. So, there is nothing we can do now... You just have to wait for our software update. And it will be more helpful to us if you can recreate this problem and let us know how you do it..." Isn't that NICE??? You paid premium price for a faulty machine, which the "genius" cannot give you a good explanation!!!

Somebody apparently were lucky enough to have their macs exchanged due to the same problem. I'm just wondering how customers were treated differently depending on locations.

I'm from Cambridge, MA, by the way.

I do not deal with the stores anymore. Order online and deal with them. Phone support is much better and if it escalates you can talk with customers relations. they get paid to pretty much kiss your ass...

I kinda agree with you. I called and spoke with customer support. This gentleman was so much nice and he was trying to troubleshoot with me by asking me to do the PRAM reset and he emailed me a link to it. I asked him if I was able to exchange the mac if I'm still not happy with it. He said I could as long as it's within 14 days. And he said he would be more than happy to help me, but since I purchased in the apple store, I should take it back for exchange.

Well... my last visit to the store was exactly on the nose of 14 days and I wasn't given the option of exchange by the "Genius"!! I called and scheduled an appointment for tomorrow, which put me on the 17th days...

Wish me luck, guys.

I got my 3rd replacement on March 1st. Went to the Store on 22nd March to get another replacement. The guy at the store didn't say a word and got me a new one ! You can tell them your problem is frequent and you did not get enough time with the MBP to make sure you needed a replacement ...;)

I have the same screen, and it happened to me once. A reboot fixed it right up. It sounds like a combination hardware/software issue - power management causes a dimming/brightening of the screen (it happened when I plugged the power cable in), and half the LEDS don't turn on (or off). Closing the display, or dimming the LED backlights all the way didn't do anything (leading it to seem more like a software thing).

It only happened once, so here's hoping.

It has happened a second time - I can confirm I was in the red zone for power, and I plugged it into the power adaptor. It may be a combination of having the ambient sensor and dimming display on battery.

At any rate, this time it wasn't an alternating pattern, but all the LEDS turned off and did not reactivate until after I had slept the computer (closed lid and reopened).

So i was watching some online movies from Hulu.com and all of the sudden i noticed these huge dark streaks in my display i wasn't sure what it was so i logged out and as i logged out i snapped this photo (plus my computer froze when i logged out so i had to hold down the power button to get it to reset)

SO what happened to my macbook pro its not doing it right now after the reset but why did it happen?!?!

Ahahaha, this happened to me once too. I just dimmed the light all the way down or restarted, I can't remember, but it was fine after that.

Honestly it's only happened once and it wasn't that big of a deal. Like I said, the fixing it was easy. I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware problem, as it has been working fine *knock on wood*.

It may not be a big deal for you but try being in a meeting with a client and saying "Take a look at these images and mockups." and then having to reboot in the middle due to the prison bar effect.

It's a "Pro" machine apparently, so it should behave like one.

Got mine exchanged. Very happy now. :) although the screen is the same model 9C81...

Totally not related, but the new mac comes with a Fujutsu hard drive. The old one had Hitachi. Not sure why...

In my experience, the cambridgeside "geniuses" are anything but.

From what i have been reading it sounds like only the 2.4ghz are acting up is this true?

That has happened to me once on my new 2.5GHz 15" 9c83. I rebooted and it disappeared. I figure if the problem comes back again/more often than I'll just use applecare. I can't imagine why they could refuse to honor applecare with this type of problem.

Is this vertical line issue only on the 2.4 Penryn models?

Haven't seen someone with a 2.5 post about this problem yet.

Grrr... So it wasnt just my eyes after all. I was all happy that I didnt have the yellow issue and I could swear something was off about my screen. Although not as bad as the OP's attached pic, my display does have that shadowing thing. I always felt like my screen had uneven lighting when it arrived. And then I do a search and find this post =\. I can bare it for now, if it gets worse, I will contact apple.

2.4 Penryn 9c83

Where are you looking to find the LCD model?
I went into System Profiler -> Graphics/Displays but no model number

I don't have my MBP in front of me but this is what I recall:
System preferences > Display > Color tab > Color LCD profile > Open Profile > Line 13
Should be something like 0009C83 (Samsung) or 0009C81 (LG) perhaps..

Hope this helps.

Ah that was definitely helpful!

Hmmm.... If it's new and your getting uneven back-lighting or other problems with your display, you should get Apple to see to it right away!! At least at the end of the day, you'll get a satisfying purchase and Apple will know there's a definite problem with the current model. Personally I wouldn't wait... the sooner you do it, the higher the chances are for a replacement other wise Apple might make you wait for a repair which could mean you'll be without your machine for a few weeks.
