Really hope they will find out how to solve this problem, and then recall the affected MBP's - But guess that's not realistic.

yeah most likely not gonna happen

i think its just a software problem... to be honest...

if it was hardware it would be happening mor eon my machine and more frequently with more severe darkening and its not its completely random...

i have the same problem plus some.

i'm currently on my 3rd macbook pro. they switch them out but the problem persists. all of the MBP i have that are affected are within the week 88 distribution.

in addition to the columns of dim lights, i also have this problem too. this "tearing" happens in safari, firefox, finder, mail app, address book. anything where i can scroll, i can reproduce this problem.

restart and problem solved. I've had my 2.4 penryn, 9c81 screen, for close to a month now and this was the first time it happened. Ain't gonna send it back in or return it for what I consider a minor issue. Unless, it happens like every 5 minutes *touch wood* otherwise, it's all good guys and gals! chillax..

Me too.

Just wanted to chime in. I have the same problem here.

Get it exchanged... simple.. they won't even bother to ask you a question. It's a well known unsolved defect by now. Show them this thread or the one on Apple discussion forums if they say this is a new problem and they saw it the 1st time ever.

Totally agree. Get it replaced. I'm on number 4.

I actually bookmarked this post and the ones on apple.com forums and they refused to read it. They will only use photos of your laptop. They did give the photos a once over on this post (Thanks to all who have contributed). According to one technician, the posts are not official and they are not allowed to use them for any reference (talk about being brain washed).

damn.. happened to me today for the 1st time.. 2.5ghz 17" hi-res glossy. rebooted and was gone.. i definitely do not want to be a member of the "replaced my MBP 4 times in a month" club...

You're the first 17" to post a problem. Welcome to the club?

I've just seen bars of light/dark happen on my 2.5 Penryn's display with the 09C81 screen for the first time. Closing the lid for 20 seconds and re-opening fixed the issue for me.

Due to the large number of people reporting issues, I'm beginning to think this is a software/firmware problem (and not a hardware issue). Because of this, it probably affects every Penryn MacBook Pro out there. This is an issue that (hopefully soon) will probably be fixed over Software Update.

Just like to add my name to the list, I am now awaiting the delivery of my 3rd 15" 2.5ghz Penryn Macbook Pro (the previous 2 have had the same problems). The current one (my 2nd) has a 9C82 screen, luckily I've got a 1tb Time Machine which lets me transfer all of my info (75gb) across in 2 and a half hours. When I called Apple Care UK, they said they'd never heard of this issue and then got me to speak to a product specialist based in Holland (by the sound of the accent), who also hadn't heard of the issue.

Makes it pretty clear it is an LED issue. Im positive this is firmware/software related...People need to stop returning MBPs becasue of this. It is plain ignorant and honestly part of the reason you pay 3K for a MBP!

3rd replacement... yet again...

Ok guys... I am back again...
my 3rd replacement MBP... yeah... I see the dreaded lines again..
Am I going to get it replaced yet again ??
No !
Sick of it, yet have to live with it .. since it seems to have a solution - close and open the lid.. make the display sleep (Ctrl + Shift + eject) and wake it up...
anyways, just wanted to let you guys know... it's a problem with the entire batch of Penryn's.... just that its too mild to be seen by an unwary user with a fancy wallpaper... so my estimate says there are many more like us who don't realize it's a problem..

Don't be ridiculous. You pay $3K because Apple wants you to pay $3K. If this is a firmware issue then this has been going on long enough for Apple to either a) acknowledge it b) issue the fix.

Until then if you are not happy with your purchase then you have every right to take it back until Apple address the problem. This is a pro machine and should behave as such. You shouldn't have to wait for a firmware update at some point in the future to fix it. It's the same with any electronic device that does not work to the satisfaction of the user out of the box. You pay for a working unit not one that is partially broken and might be fixed in the future.

The only ignorant thing about this is the post you just made. If you are not reading the internet reports about this issue, then suffering the black bars is just a symptom of a defective display until Apple say something about it.

I've now returned 2 macbook pros with this issue and now the one I got yesterday makes an incredibly annoying clicking noise every minute or two out of the right speaker even when I'm just browsing through a webpage with no audio.... I had my 12' powerbook for 3 years with no issues and now i'm going to be returning a 3rd computer this month...this is redic!!

so ok it happened to me.. i have a 15" penryn 2.5 matte and last night i opened my laptop from sleep mode and saw these lines. the battery was low.. so i am assuming this could be the problem? anyhow, i rebooted it and havent seen it since.. *fingers cross*

Noticed yout tag said you are from San Diego. Just curious if you received your replacements from the UTC store. I know they claim they have never seen this problem. I've returned 2 there. The third one I received from UTC I returned to the Otay Ranch store for the same problem and a bad graphics card.

Hi to all,
add my macbook pro 15" 2.4 to the list  (had it 4 days ago)
the vertical strips appeared after 1 day.
I tryied with a forced shutdown (pressing power button until shutdown). It was ok fow few hours but the strips returned.
I tryied the option+command+r+p+power (pram reset?). Again, ok for some time and then ...

Sometimes just a simple reset make them disappear.. sometimes they stay also after shutdown..

merd..:(

P.S. I'm from Italy

Some notes:
- the problem is not visible with the standard background (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2387/1721656068_75c73cff37.jpg) and other dark and noisy bg images, but it's very clear with a flat light color bg
- it seams a power management issue related (put AC on/off then put in sleep and wake.. something like this)

I'm going to ask info to apple support...

ok... suggestions from apple support call center:
1. remove the battery, press the power button 5 sec., reinstall the battery and try
2. reset pram (opt+cmd+r+p+power ..)
3. restart
4. ctrl+shift+eject
5. pray and other

All of these work fine - I said (not the 5th) - for a few hours :( but not even one is a definitive solution!

They will change my MBP, but I'm quite sure I'll have back a new one with the same problem .. They grope in the dark, have no idea of the problem source, so..

Mine has the same problem. Bought on release day, its done it twice, and the fix is to close the lid and open it.

If closing the lid doesnt fix it if/when it happens again, I'll look into replacing it, otherwise its a non-issue.
