I've heard the story from an Apple Discussion forum that they also said it was a software problem. Could be the same complainant, though.

Not sure if I posted here, but I get it every now and again, mostly when I'm i'm on low power, but not necessarily.

Ctrl-shift=eject fixes it instantly.

My MPB is currently at a repair center (third party distributor). Apple told the technicians there that they shall not try to repair (e.g. by exchanging the logic board) as Apple is aware of the problem and working on a solution (which probably will be software/ firmware related).

however i did have a problem with the display turning back on after i opened the lid but that was only once

I believe this is an OS X problem because my SR MBP does this every now and then (running Leopard)

It is one of the most annoying "bugs?" for me w/ leopard.

Along w/ Mail and Safari Stability and Front Row freezing after a while:(

Besides those.. I have no complaints

Mine is at the depot now for this issue that they seemingly know nothing anout. It's only 7 weeks old, and the problem kept recurring, so I decided to finally just take it in. I backed up, just in case they decide to replace the harddrive:) All I know is that I want it back already:(

My less than 4 day old Penryn MBP just did this for the first time (that I noticed) and after reading some of the posts I closed it for 5 seconds and re-opened it and it was fine. I reallllly hope this issue gets resolved.

After a week and a half of owning the 2.4Ghz mbp I still havnt had this issue.. and I put my mbp to sleep every time I dont use it and drained the battery many times. I'm just hoping that mine will never do this (crossing fingers).

I did read in an article about even dells doing this and something about its a manufacturing defect in the process of installing the screen where its been pinched or something at the bottom.

This is what leads me to believe its not a software issue and rather a hardware issue. I mean if Dells led screen laptops are doing this its got to be a hardware issue as dell and apple uses same screens from the same manufacturers + Dell runs windows/linux.

have you guys tried resetting PRAM? Apparently that can cause some issues with the display. Or try SMC reset too. I was on the phone with AppleCare and the guy told me to do that to see if I could get rid of the uneven illumination (pull the battery and power and hold power for 10 seconds). Of course it didnt work but its worth a try. I ended up exchanging my SR MBP for another and this screen is fine.

I actually just reset my PRAM and when it restarted I noticed this problem. My screen did this. I restarted again and now it's gone.

holy crap so it is a common problem...where was this thread when i made my thread??

if its a software problem, i dont think i will botehr exchanging...
can anyone confirm that its a software problem?

Guys, it is not a software problem. The "geniuses" are acting like it is, but it is a LCD screen malfunction. I received a brand new replacement machine, and this one seems to be just fine. Do not let this problem go unattended. It is really not acceptable to pay this much $$$ for a machine and have it do that. They were very compliant with this issue at my Apple store, and just wanted to see me leave satisfied, and I am, now:)

I had this happen once when I woke it from sleep. I slept it again and when I openened the display it was gone. Is there a reliable way to reproduce this when taking it into the apple store, or do they just believe you? My experience is that they want to be able to reproduce the problem unless it's a documented issue in their database.

I took a pic of it, but yes, they did try to reproduce the issue, and of course it did not do it for them. I noticed it happened mostly when my battery was running hot. Take a pic of it next time it happens. This problem is more than likely to reoccur again.

I think its a hardware issue because I've been through 5 15" mbp, yes 5 and I kept each one for about a week before exchanging due to other issues but they all never had this led screen problem not even once and I put all the mbp to sleep when I never used it and drained their batteries as well.

Also I hear some dell led screens have this problem as well and on a website I found about the led issue (which on the dell looks exactly the same as the mbp), they concluded that its the manufacturing process where the bottom of the lcd or led rather is pinched in the manufacturing process.

From the website:
"It seems that the MacBook Pro isn't the only one suffering from this issue, because one of the commenters on the Crunchgear post says that he "had this happen on a new Dell XPS M1330 right out of the box. The technician that came out said that it was pressure points on the screen during manufacturing and certain screens were damaged."

I say if you are within the 14 days definitely get it exchanged, I really think its a hardware issue and not software. Because everyone is using the same software and if it was a software issue everyone would have experienced this led issue once and I've yet to see it happen to all 5 of the 15" mbp that I had not even once.

i dont think it's a software problem

yep it is hardware problem, some defect in LCD

Your neighborhood MacRumors Editor just got this problem with his new MBP. Glad to see we're all in this together.

Now let's see if we can get a statement out of Apple.

Finally, maybe we will get somewhere with this issue. So far my replaced model has not had this problem. (I am keeping my fingers crossed.)

and again

I've had this problem for several weeks now on a new 15.4 MBP. The ctrl-shift-eject shortcut used to work, but now it fails more often than not. If it were software, I would have thought that the 10.5.3 update would have fixed it.

Has anyone had any luck recently with taking a machine in and getting it replaced?

Supposedly this problem is reproducible using photobooth (as discovered by members at the Apple Discussion boards):

Unplug your MBP.
Set Brightness to 6 bars below max.
Run photobooth and take pictures.

I think it is just a quick way of activating/deactivating the backlight. Is this reproducible to anyone?

I don't have a MBP, but I work on/with them regularly, and have yet to see this problem, but I'll keep an eye out. It looks like a backlight issue, and I have seen similar problems in various other laptops, just not with those exact characteristics. I'd be stunned if Apple refused to fix the laptop, though, as it's clearly a defect. Most likely problem is the backlight itself or the inverter (not sure if that's still a separate part or integrated into the logic board or display module now).

this has happened only once to me. It was like a week after I received my MBP (I bought mine they day they were released in late february), and it happened in windows. I restarted the computer and it hasn't done in it since (in either operating system)

Just in case you didn't know you can use Disk Utility to easily copy your hard drive to another laptop either directly using a firewire cable (one booted off the leopard dvd and the other in target disk mode), or first backup to an external usb and then copy it onto the new laptop.

This is for the guy who said he spent hours setting up his 2nd and 3rd macbook pros DOH ;)

Ok, its been a while since I've posted on this topic. So, I am my 4th one. I went through three of them in less than 30 days after it was released. Well, long story short. I went to a different store in the area and have not had this problem since.

Regarding Apple support on this topic, I think they are finally aware but will not address it until they have a fix. At the time I was experiencing the problem my macbook pros were being replaced.

According the genius folks, they did not have spare parts at the time to correct the problem. This is why I was getting them swapped out. A bit unlikely UNLESS there was a change in the display hardware. The change may be just enough that parts from the previous generation are not compatible (this is purely speculation on my part).

Anyway, as I've always said. Don't settle on this problem. There are plenty of penryn macbooks pros that do work.

I've gone through 4 replacements myself, all with this same issue, and hadn't had the problem occur on this latest MBP for the two months I've had it, but twice in the last three nights I've seen the vertical lines! Pretty annoyed at this point

Hmm not good. I was hoping to finally upgrade from my aging 12" Powerbook at some point soon.

They always seem to force people up to the higher end models these days if they want to avoid serious quality issues...it's the same with the 20" iMac and the rubbish screen they put in those. Fork out a fortune for a model of a size you don't really want (24" iMac / 17" MPB) and then you have a better chance - call me cynical because that's what I am. Really losing my love for Apple sometimes, but then what's the alternative? Windows/Linux, yuck.

Had a weird similar looking problem with my mbp 2,4 penryn. Twice my screen looked kind of messed up after I woke it up from sleepmode. The stripes are there, but the screen is kind of strange. Talked to Apple about it, but there was little help.

LOL everytime I returned the computer with the same problem, the geniuses at the store acted like it was something that was exclusively an issue I was having and one they had otherwise never heard of. I think they've been instructed to play stupid...
