OK, so I am having the same problem with mine. I've got the 9C81 screen.

As far as I can tell it's related to temperature. It only happens if the computer has been asleep for a while. Even then it only happens if the ambient temperature is below about 70° F. I found that if I turn up the brightness to maximum (on battery) before closing the lid, the backlight will always turn on without the stripes upon waking the computer again. I guess when it is forced turn on at full-brightness it shocks it into turning on correctly. Since I started doing this trick, it hasn't failed. I know, I shouldn't have to do that but it's only a minor routine to get used to.

I really, really didn't want to return my MBP because this is the only problem with it. I didn't want to risk getting another MBP with more severe problems. Considering that this problem doesn't seem to be related to just one screen model, I'd say it's related to the backlight controller. Since it is temperature related in my case, I don't think that it is software related. I'll wait until a real solution is available. For now my workaround works for me.

Very Good Point!

Hi all, here I am again.
I had this problem with my first macbook pro 15", I decided to send it back for a change. Today I'm with my new macbook pro and this is the 4th day of stress test and everything is ok. I'm happy I changed it, maybe someone can tolerate the forced reset or some-other-forced-operation to restore the display but not me.
I heartily recommend to change the MBP if you find the backlit bug. :)

...but it's just my experience and my MBP,
bye :p

Did you have to return the MBP first before they sent you a replacement ? Would i be able to get apple to send me a replacement and then i return the defective one as its currently my only comp ?

return and get a MB?

I returned my 1st MBP, and was planning to return my 2nd as well (both for minor screen issues), but now I am thinking the one I have is better than what I am reading about on these forums.

Its like this. I am actually considering keeping a slightly underperforming unit rather than chance getting an even worse unit in an exchange.

It occurs to me that if this weren't a 2000 dollar machine I would not have such high standards. I am seriously considering getting a regular MB instead. With MB I know the screen is not nearly as good (they are only 200:1 contrast ratio and have much narrower viewing angles), but they are 1/2 to 3/4 the price.

Still thinking...

well this thing happened to me before. it was when i opened my macbook pro from sleep mode and i have very little battery left. i believe it was about 15 minutes worth. anyhow, i rebooted and it hasnt happened since.

**crossing fingers its a software related problem**

but yeah that was the only time.

Just got off the phone with apple and they are shipping me a replacement straight away. I have to say I am really pleased with the service I received. Hopefully this next one will be ok!

Yep, my MBP also shows this phenomenon. I have a Penryn MBP, 2.2 GHz with a 250 GB harddrive. The screen is a 9C81 (presumably LG). I bought it 3.5 weeks ago.

When I got it, the yellowing did not seem too bad (only at the lower left part), so I decided to stay with it. Now, the "vertical stripe" issue, presumably a partial failing of the led backlights, came up (after the 14-day period). The phenomenon occurred twice and I have more or less some indication it's connected with temperature changes.

Well, the seller here in Germany (CanCom) asked me to send it in for a check through. I don't really believe that's gonna solve the issue, but there's nothing else I can do, except for accepting it which is not really an option given the price of the MBP.

this happened to me ONCE. I was like wtf? Then I restarted the macbook pro and it was all fine again. Yah that's right, you guys should learn to restart your computers and not always use sleep mode and stuff. Cause mine is perfectly fine now, it only happened ONCE.

Long time lurker here; this is my first post:rolleyes:

So I was at the Genius Bar at Apple Store SF last Sunday and the genius told me "oh, we're aware of the issue, and it's a software problem. our engineers are working on that, and the fix should come out in the form of EFI update or something...." He didn't mention when.

I'm not sure whether I should trust his words, but hopefully the update comes out soon. Has anyone heard of a similar story?

As for now, I'm not getting mine replaced because I'm more worried about getting dead pixels on the replacement....

My display is 9C83.

It interesting that he mentioned there are aware of the issue. If this is true then everyone returning their MP finally got Apple's attention. I would stay away from the 2.5 penryn refurbs until this is fixed. I know I've contributed 3 already.

Why you people complain. You bought it, now it is your problem. Screen defective? Well, then Apple has excellent feature build in- accessibility, you can turn that on and close your eyes, then you will be OK.:D:D:D:D

It seems to me that the 2.4Ghz version of the penryn mbp only has this problem. I was reading this thread before leaving to the apple store to exchange my mba for the 15" mbp.. but I was like screw it I want a mbp and opted for the 2.5Ghz version as I wanted the 512mb vram model.. but I'm glad that I got the 2.5Ghz version since I dont have this led problem (crossing fingers).

If you would have read my previous post, you would know that my 2.5Ghz model is also affected by this issue. A different processor/model will not give you immunity to this problem. I hope yours is fine though.

What type of screen did you have? Maybe its related to a certain company with bad led lights. I have a 9c80 (AUO optronics) and no problems.

Just found this... thought it might be of interest to some of you.

http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/334/C14951/

"It seems that the MacBook Pro isn't the only one suffering from this issue, because one of the commenters on the Crunchgear post says that he "had this happen on a new Dell XPS M1330 right out of the box. The technician that came out said that it was pressure points on the screen during manufacturing and certain screens were damaged."

Count me in too ..... 2.4 Penryn, LG screen.

Batteries were in the red zone.

Closed the screen, and that fixed it.

I also have an irritating buzz which is very audible in a quiet environment.
I wonder if the support in the Netherlands is as good as in the US.

I also don't think anyone replied to the question that was asked to know if Apple sends replacement before you send yours in ? Again, is this valid outside the US too ?

I bought mine online, and would only considering another system if Apple sends it to me first.

So far that I can see it from macrumors or apple support forums its about 99% that 2.4Ghz model has these problems.

Count the 2.5s also. I've returned 3 of them already. Fortunately (knock on wood) this one has not done it yet.

Its got to be the manufacturing as some machines were installed incorrectly??

Also does this happen in windows as well?

So far I have not seen any problems only the magsafe not lighting up a few times but that's it. I've put the mbp to sleep, restarted, shut it off.. everything but not seeing that problem (crossing fingers).

Are they updates on this? Anyone else hear the firmware story from apple support?

I've heard the story from an Apple Discussion forum that they also said it was a software problem. Could be the same complainant, though.

Not sure if I posted here, but I get it every now and again, mostly when I'm i'm on low power, but not necessarily.

Ctrl-shift=eject fixes it instantly.

Whoa that is weird. Glad to hear that its software related and not hardware though. I just got my 2.4Ghz mbp today and seems to be fine so far (crosses fingers) its a 9c80 auo screen and its gorgeous!
